Attempted to consolidate power in the Western empire, may have been the 'Emperor Lucius' of Arthurian legend as described 500 years later by Geoffrey of Monmouth. In this article is written that according to a historian Tiberius II:
“
was really the first of the Greek Emperors, and with him Byzantine becomes the fittest name for the Eastern Empire, which was still Roman in tradition.
”
Gibbon (Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, chapter 45, Note 29) doesn't agree with him:
“
It is therefore singular enough that Paul (l. iii. c. 15) should distinguish him [Maurice] as the first Greek emperor — primus ex Graecorum genere in Imperio constitutus. His immediate predecessors had in deed been born in the Latin provinces of Europe: and a various reading, in Graecorum Imperio, would apply the expression to the empire rather than the prince.]
”
According to Treadgold (A history of the byzantine state and society, page 227)
“
but he [Maurice] must have been a native speaker of Greek, unlike previous emperors since Anastasius
”
Tiberius isn't the first greek emperor because he has born in the latin provinces of the Empire. Maurice is the first greek emperor.--83.103.39.119 (talk) 16:13, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Status of article
The article as it currently stands, is, frankly, a mess. Disjointed, uninformative, filled with quotes that do very little to inform the reader about Tiberius II, it needs a significant overhaul. I will attempt to draft up a revised version over the next few days, so if editors could refrain from editing the article until I have updated the article, that would be great. Thanks. Tiberius' policies in the West were disastrous with the empire so over-extended in its affairs - I know there are histories out there that point this out (which the quote by Bury does not go into.) Should be updated to reflect that. 50.111.19.34 (talk) 09:40, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
