Opening heading

I replaced the existing article (though I forgot to log in). The new article is mostly a translation of the more complete Spanish wikipedia article, but I incorporated a couple elements from the previous English one. Ak13 23:50, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Following the attempted coup of 1981, the socialists convincingly won the general election.

Following?. The attemped coup was on february 1981, the general election was in November 1982, 20 months after the coup.

Oppose The rationale provided for the move was that Union of the Democratic Centre translates back into Spanish as Unión del Centro Democrático when the correct name is Unión de Centro Democrático. That's completely true but the reason for that quite simply is that Spanish uses grammatical articles differently to how English does. Sentences like "No existe el infierno", "no me gustan los crios" and "el inglés es un idioma muy útil" translate to English respectively as "It doesn't exist the hell", "I don't like the kids" and "the English is a very useful language." All of those, while being correct literal translations, don't work because of different rules in the two languages meaning that direct translations don't always work best. Further the article was originally at Democratic Centre Union (Spain) for the first year of its existence and was then moved to its current title back in April 2007 and has been stable at the current title since then.
Lastly, Union of the Democratic Centre is the name used by the majority of reliable sources in English, e.g. Encyclopedia Britannica, The U.S. State Department, The BBC, Foreign Affairs, The Telegraph, The Economist and numerous books therefore more accurately meets

Anthony, there is certainly more than one translation possible but the fact here is that most reliable sources go with the Union of the Democratic Centre so under

WP:COMMONNAME I'd argue that we go with that one. There are sources which go with Democratic Centre Union (e.g. Time Magazines report on the 1977 elections) but those are heavily outnumbered by other sources... here's one in the New York Times from February 1981 for example.
