These wagons were developed by Showmen and later adopted by multiple itinerant groups, including both multiple Romani peoples and Indigenous European and British Isles Travellers. "Gypsy wagon" was used by all the English speaking groups, while Vardo is the Romani word.

It's problematic to erase all these other groups in favour of the American preference to avoid the word "Gypsy", which is still used by multiple Travellers groups (including Romani) in the rest of the English speaking world, including the UK.

Or if this article is meant to be only about Romani, could we have a page for the history of the wagons in general that doesn't intentionally erase other Travellers, including Romani who use the word for themselves? Zentomologist (talk) 19:27, 5 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

In the English language the Romani people are widely known by the exonym Gypsies (or Gipsies), which is considered pejorative by some Romani people due to its connotations of illegality and irregularity as well as its historical use as a racial slur. At the first World Romani Congress in 1971, its attendees unanimously voted to reject the use of all exonyms for the Romani people, including Gypsy, due to their aforementioned negative and stereotypical connotations. 128.95.24.85 (talk) 19:05, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The Irish Travellers also live(d) in these sorts of caravans, however they are not Romani people and probably don't use the word "Vardo". How can we include them in this sort of horse-drawn vehicle article?
