My memories in Windsor

I lived in Windsor for my first 18 years. Then I joined the military and have only visited a few times since then.

As I remember it and was told by some of the town's elders:

Early 1900's - Windsor had a bank, a police force, doctor's office, "dance hall", several boarding places, an eleven grade high school, and many merchantile stores.

The beginning of the SRP brought many people to Windsor for work and a large number of people opened their homes for the opportunity to make some money by offering room and board. An of course, this also brought the growing business of moonshine. Some of the other more legal enterprises were asparagus and turpentine.

1949 brought an end to the High School and it was reduced to 8 grades.

During the 50's and 60's, the the store owners came and went, Eustace Monday (Sinclair), Joe Faulkner (Texaco), Calvin Cushman (Gulf), Frank Mizell, Sr.(Amoco) and Albert Johnson (Esso.)

During the early 60's a contractor came through and bought a lot of the building and leveled them for the old brick. That was the end of things like the "Hotel."

In 1968, I moved away.151.190.254.108 (talk) 15:37, 29 March 2011 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by TRollison (talkcontribs) 13:37, 15 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
