The article seems to contain some bias towards the tarkine. Although the tarkine is near wynyard it is not one of the towns features and this information should be moved to the section on tasmania. Disagree: the Tarkine is increasingly becoming a tourist attraction. Tourists want to know what can be seen within easy reach of the town (and not just the town itself). It would be remiss of us not to inform visitors to the town of a major attraction on their doorstep. It is true that there are other ways of getting to the Tarkine but this does not change the fact that Wynyard, posessing an interstate airport and only 40 minutes by road is one of the most accessible. To substantiate: let me refer readers to text that (at the time of writing) could be found in the Wikipedia article for Hobart : "Other local attractions include the Australian Cadbury chocolate factory, and for a day trip places like Port Arthur, and the tessellated pavement, the Huon Valley, the Tahune Forest Air Walk, Cockle Creek (the southernmost point reachable by car) and the walk to South Cape Bay Beach which also forms part of a 6 day walk to South Western Tasmania." Note that many of these attractions are more than an hour away from Hobart I am well aware that the term 'Tarkine,' being identified with environmental interests is considered by many to be a politically loaded term and this may account for the unease that some contributors may have felt above. However, the fact remains that an area exists that is of demonstrable interest to visitors to the town and that this town is one of the most accessible entry points to the area. Therefore I would encourage someone other than myself to consider reinstating the reference to Tarkine. The text in question was this: "The Tarkine Forest can be reached within 40 minutes drive of Wynyard. This wilderness area is becoming an increasingly popular destination for ecotourism. It is the world's second largest temperate rainforest and contains diverse species and landscapes as well as remnants of both Aboriginal and European settlement.) Those items are listed as being near Hobart because Hobart is the only major settlement in the south-east of the state (where the other items in the list are located). Also note that they are only included in items in a list and does not go into detail on any of them. There isn't really anything that would be more accurately described as being "near Wynyard" than being "near Burnie" or simply "on the north-west coast" or "north-west Tasmania". Dear Chuq, fair enough about the phone number - and I agree that Wikipedia is not to be used for promotional purposes per se. However, this shouldn't preclude information that is of interest to tourists -as is clearly the case with the article on Hobart or for that matter, most Wikipedia towns and cities (written I suspect by many, like me - I freely admit- who are keen to show what their town has to offer!). Many different people use Wikipedia for different reasons; sociologists, historians, geographers, school students and ... tourists. If its good enough for Hobart to include its tourist attractions, it is good enough for Wynyard. I think proximity to Australia's largest remaining temperate rainforest is worthy of mention. As a compromise, can we take up your suggestion of including it in a list, maybe under a separate heading? Steve van Ommen 12:23, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
