• The ALT1 photo appears below the first photo, and that makes it look like it is part of the next DYK nom. I'm adding this comment to create some offset so people will notice, and I assume future comments will increase that offset so it is clear that alternate image goes with the Tony Ahn article.

• Regarding the hook, I am reprinting The Rambling Man's comments at WT:DYK:
• Besides the article being a puff piece which really does a great job of advertising Mr Ahn and his career highlights, the hook says:
• that over four days in 2015, American writer Tony Ahn hiked the Bataan Death March route, taking only one liter of water and one cup of rice per day, to raise awareness of Filipino involvement?
• Now, I take that to mean the hike was conducted over four days, not that it took "over four days", however the article states It was sunny the entire four and a half days Ahn took to make the trek, presumably taking the extra half a day to do the last bit. But there's more confusion, one sentence says he hiked the "112km Bataan Death March" (non-breaking space and conversion required there really) but then it says ... taking four days to cover the 102km ... plus ... and a 6km march from the ... (more non-breaking spaces and conversions needed). That adds up to 108 km, not the 112km noted in the previous sentence. Finally, the hook needs to be clearer, as per the article, it was to raise awareness that Filipinos were also involved in the march, not simply "to raise awareness of Filipino involvement". • Doesn't "to raise awareness that Filipinos were also involved in the march" and "to raise awareness of Filipino involvement" mean the same thing? I was simply going for brevity/word economy with my wording. Besides, the title of the cited article is "American walks Bataan Death March to raise awareness of Philippine involvement" ScooterSponson (talk) 14:18, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

• @ScooterSponson: thank you for your response. Firstly, it's best to add new or changed hooks in chronological order, naming them "ALT1", "ALT2", etc., so other editors can see the progress of the nomination. I restored your original hook, then struck it and added ALT1 with the corrected fact about the duration of the hike. (It's not correct to say 5 days when it was just over 4 days.)

• The difference is I wrote "over five days" which is correct as the hike began on Dec. 23 and ended on Dec. 27 and you said "in just over four days" which is also correct but has a slightly different connotation. ScooterSponson (talk) 13:13, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

• Regarding The Rambling Man's point, if the hook is not clear to one of the DYK regulars, it's probably not going to be clear to other readers. • Also I added two more ALT options, both with "were also forced to march?" because I think it clearly fixes any ambiguity over what "involvement" or being "part of the march" means. I guess some people could think that referred to villagers who gave them food or water, or helped some escape. ScooterSponson (talk) 13:19, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

• Thank you. Since shorter is always better for a hook, let's go with ALT4. I removed the portrait image in favor of the death march one. • Comment: It's probably better not to show on MainPage "... Tony Ahn (pictured) ..." when Ahn is not really in the picture. I'd suggest using the hook without the proposed pic of Ahn's shadow on a memorial for the death march. --PFHLai (talk) 01:23, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

• Comment Remember that "(pictured)" is not counted, so (shadow pictured) is only an additional 7 characters and a space to make it 200 characters/spaces plus the question mark. I don't know if the question mark is counted but if so, remove "a" from before "liter" and you save a character and a space: 199 characters/spaces total. Another way to go about it is to not concentrate on Ahn, but on the death march marker, by inserting (marker pictured) right after "Bataan Death March route" That's 199 plus the question mark. Both work. I'm going to add an ALT5 and ALT6 to represent these suggestions. I think the picture is front page worthy because it is coherent at thumbnail size, will stimulate curiosity, and is a bit different than the usual fare.
