George S. Boutwell
Secretary of the Treasury (under President Ulysses S. Grant), Governor of Massachusetts, a U.S. Senator and Representative, and the first Commissioner of Internal Revenue (under President Abraham Lincoln). Boutwell, an abolitionist, was instrumental in the formation of the Republican Party, and championed African-American citizenship and suffrage rights during Reconstruction.
