Timor
I dont't see the reason (geographical or cultural) to include Timor in Pacific Islands. The
- culturaly the people of East Timor are of pacific origin. Also it is disputalble exactly witch Indonesian islands are in Oceania and witch in Asia (New Guinea/Papua looks like indisputably in Oceania, but Timor is a borderline case).
Malukku Islands
I removed the Maluku Islands from the template as: they are part of Indonesia, and we can't feasibly add every single island subgroup of Indonesia that might be in Oceania separately.
However, I left

Rationalisation
I've rationalised the list to include only those areas classifed by the UN as part of Oceania[1]. Following international practice will hopefully avoid disputes, and keep the list short, simple and authoritative. It should also avoid overlaps, so we don't end up with too many navigation boxes on one page (e.g. East Timor).
All the complexities about variant terminology usage can be covered on the Oceania page, I don't think the navigation boxes are the place to do it.
The other thing I've done is eliminate the distinction between "countries" and "dependent areas". This is a technical distinction at the best of times, but in Oceania it's all but meaningless. It's simpler just to list everyplace in one go. I think Cook Islanders, for example, would be upset if you told them the Cook Islands is not a country.

- I think West Timor should be on this list. Should we add it separately or replace them both with Timor?
- Actually, the UN page does not classify Timor as part of Oceania at all - it puts it with South-East Asia. And the article about Melanesia lists Timor as tentative. Should it be removed completely? --Baryonic Being 22:16, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
Dependent territories / special territories
There's currently a discussion at template talk:East Asia over whether the official name of territory, namely special administrative region, and which sovereign State the territories listed belong to, have to be specified in the {{East Asia}} template. Please feel free to join the discussion and express your opinion. — Instantnood 11:46, August 3, 2005 (UTC)
Category:United States navigational boxes
- I added this template to Category:United States navigational boxes because some of the territories are maintained by the U.S. --CapitalR 01:01, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
I added both of these back on July 19th, and as they have not been reverted, I hope they remain. They, like
- I don't think they should be included. Whereas Norfolk Island is geographically Oceanian and considered a dependency, Christmas Island and Cocos Islands are not. They are Indian Ocean Territories and are not located in Oceania. They may be considered in Oceania only as part of Australia, not apart from it.--]
- I added them back. They're included on Lawyer 12:45, 14 August 2006 (UTC)]

Template and actual Oceania page differ
For instance, the placement of New Zealand in Polynesia in the template, but in Australasia in Oceania. These should probably be edited so that they match. -Yupik 07:37, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
- Is New Zealand more associated with Australasia or Polynesia...? Unsure, David Kernow (talk) 00:23, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
New Zealand is more usually associated with Australasia. Also, I think we should remove Hawaii (not listed as a country/territory in the UN list). East Timor and the listed portions of Indonesia are more associated with Southeast Asia so should be removed. --Polaron | Talk 16:54, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- If no-one objects after a few days, I say go ahead; the Oceania article seems to concur. Regards, David (talk) 01:21, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

Why do you include East Timor in Oceania?
East Timor is part of Asia and not Oceania!!!83.144.160.230 (talk) 22:42, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
Rename...>.>
The continent is called "Australia," NOT "Oceania." This page, and any similar ones, needs to be renamed to reflect this. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.140.145.55 (talk) 22:07, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
England is not transcontinental country
Since when the Great Britain is the transcontinental country? How about Liechtenstein? Or maybe Swaziland? Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 12:11, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Rotuma
Although it is called a dependency, is it a dependency in the ordinary sense of the word? Its status is more like an autonomous constituent, rather than a dependency like other dependencies on the template. Von Kornberg (talk) 15:52, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
