She released her debut album, Sin & Salvation: Live At the Carlyle, in 2015. Her notable television appearances include All My Children (2008), Girls (2016), and a starring role in Snowpiercer. Hall has also appeared in multiple films, including Sex and the City (2008), The Graduates (2008), The Big Gay Musical (2009), and Becks (2017).

Early life

Hall was born in

Filipino
, Spanish, and Swedish ancestry. Her paternal grandfather immigrated to San Francisco from the Philippines in 1926, and her paternal grandmother is Swedish.

She attended the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts, where she studied dance. As a youth, she also participated in the Young People's Teen Musical Theatre Company in San Francisco. Her first notable performance was when she sang in front of 50,000 people, including Pope John Paul II, at Candlestick Park in San Francisco when she was 7.

Career

Musical theatre

At 18 years old, Hall was cast in the touring company of Cats.[1] During the tour, she performed the dual roles of Demeter, Bombalurina, and Cassandra. After she left the tour in 1999, Hall made her Broadway debut when she joined the Broadway cast of Cats.[2] Hall understudied the role of Demeter, before leaving the show in 2000.

Following this, Hall joined the national tour of Annie Get Your Gun, a musical that is a fictional retelling of the life of Annie Oakley.[3] She was an understudy for the lead role of Annie Oakley. After the tour ended in late-2000, she performed in the dancing ensemble of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. The production was an Encores! staged concert performed at the New York City Center.

In 2001, Hall joined the Broadway revival of 42nd Street, playing the role of Annie. She remained with the show for over a year. In 2003, she was a part of the ensemble in the world premiere production of Radiant Baby.[4] The short lived musical about Keith Haring premiered off-Broadway at the The Public Theater. Hall remained with the show throughout the run. Hall also performed a one-night-only benefit concert called, Back in Black, at a gay bar in New York in support of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.[5]

In 2004, she joined the Broadway production of Dracula, the Musical as a member of the ensemble and as the second vampire.[6] The musical received negative reviews, and closed after only 154 performances.[7] Shortly thereafter, Hall joined the world premiere production of Tarzan, a musical adaptation of the 1999 film of the same name.[8] The musical premiered on Broadway on May 10, 2006, and was the first Disney theatrical production to premiere on Broadway without an out-of-town tryout.[8] She was a member of the ensemble and an understudy to the lead role of Jane Porter. As a member of the original Broadway cast, Hall appeared on the cast recording of the musical.

In 2008, she participated in the reality show

Legally Blonde: The Musical – The Search for Elle Woods. She was the third contestant eliminated.[9]

Between 2008 and 2009, Hall appeared in multiple off-Broadway productions. She starred in the musical Green Eyes[10], and then the world premiere of Bedbugs!!! at the New York Musical Theatre Festival.[11][12] In 2009, she was the understudy for the role of Monica P. Miller in the musical Rooms: A Rock Romance.[13] Also in 2009, she took over the lead role of Sarah in the musical The Toxic Avenger at the New World Stages.[14]

In 2012, Hall originated the role of Nicola in the musical

Tony Award for Best Musical. She departed the production on March 2, 2014.[15]

In 2023, Hall was cast in the lead role of Kenna in the world premiere production of In Dreams at Leeds Playhouse. She will continue on in the role when the musical makes its North American premiere at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto.

Music

In 2013, her band The Deafening released an album with original songs titled "Central Booking".[16]

On September 28, 2015, Hall released her first solo album, Sin & Salvation: Live At the Carlyle, featuring her renditions of songs from artists such as

Hozier, and James Brown. The album was recorded at the Carlyle Hotel during Hall's musical show Sin & Salvation, which ran for two weeks.[17]

In 2015, Hall toured North America alongside Josh Groban on his Stages concert tour.[18]

Hall released a series of 12 digital EPs titled Obsessed in 2018, one per month. The January release consists of selections from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, while each of the others features her renditions of several songs by a different artist.

Film and television

Her TV work include 9 episodes of All My Children in the role of Treena in 2009, Juicy Lucy in Good Girls Revolt (2015), the voice of Countess Coloratura/Rara in the 115th episode of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, titled "The Mane Attraction".[19][20]

In 2016, Hall played a seductive yoga instructor in an episode of the HBO series Girls.[21] She also performs the songs along with Tony Vincent for the fictional band "Dog Gone" in the 2015 PBS series Nature Cat.[22]

She has appeared in five movies: Sex and the City (2008), The Graduates (2008), Born from the Foot (2009), The Big Gay Musical (2009), and Becks (2017), in which she plays the title role and her first leading role in a feature film,[23] and received widespread critical acclaim for her performance.[24] which won the U.S. Fiction Award at the LA Film Festival.[25]



In 2011, she performed as Daughter of the Ocean in the musical Prometheus Bound,[26] inspired by Aeschylus's Ancient Greek tragedy, at the American Repertory Theater,[27] and also appeared as Blaze in the musical Chix6.[28]

In 2014, Hall was cast as Yitzhak in the Broadway production Hedwig and the Angry Inch,[29] (a role previously played off-Broadway by Miriam Shor) opposite Neil Patrick Harris, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.[30] She left the role on April 4, 2015, after playing Yitzhak opposite Harris, Darren Criss, Michael C. Hall, Andrew Rannells and John Cameron Mitchell as Hedwig. In 2016, she was cast in the national tour of Hedwig, which opened on October 2, 2016, reprising her role as Yitzhak, and for one performance a week, playing the title role of Hedwig for a total of eight performances in Los Angeles and San Francisco,[31] making her the first actor to play both roles in the same production.[32] She played the roles in San Francisco and Los Angeles alongside Glee star Darren Criss.[33]

In 2021, Hall voice acted in a live-streamed reading of a science fiction screenplay called Aurora by Joe Scott, playing multiple roles. The reading, which served as Scott's YouTube channel's Halloween special and centered around the Aurora, Texas, UFO incident, saw its proceeds donated to Team Seas.[34]

Personal life

In December 2018, she announced her engagement to Jonathan Stein.[35] They married on May 27, 2019.[36]

Hall is a supporter of the LGBT community.

In 2022, Hall spoke out in support of the need for intimacy coordinators on film and television sets.[37] Her support came after her Snowpiercer co-star, Sean Bean, said that they "ruin the spontaneity of sex scenes".
