Unacademy is an Indian online education technology[2] company based in Bangalore. It was originally created by Gaurav Munjal as a YouTube channel in 2010.[3] As a company, it was established in 2015 by Gaurav Munjal, Roman Saini and Hemesh Singh, and is headquartered in Bangalore.[4][5] The company provides preparation material for many professional and educational entrance exams, in the form of Unacademy's live classes on YouTube.[6][7]

History

Gaurav Munjal Started Unacademy as a YouTube channel in 2010. In 2015 Unacademy was officially registered as an education company in Bangalore. Known as “Unacademy Subscription” (formerly known as Unacademy Plus) is a paid learning service provided by the company. The company currently provides preparation study material for students aspiring for civil services, bank jobs and other competitive exams.[8] A privately held company, Unacademy has received funding through a series of large offerings,[9][10] Including investments from US private equity firm General Atlantic, Facebook, Nexus Venture Partners, Blume Ventures, Steadview Capital, Sequoia India, SAIF Partners and Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy.[11][12] As of July 2020, Unacademy worth 1.45 billion USD.[13]

Acquisition

In 2018, Unacademy acquired WiFiStudy for $10 million. WiFiStudy is a YouTube-based online exam preparation and learning platform founded in 2013 by Dinesh Godara. WiFiStudy focuses on preparing for competitive public sector exams like Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Banking, Railway and State Police.[14][15][16]

Later the company acquired

The company acquired Mumbai-based online competitive programming platform CodeChef in June 2020.[17]

The company acquired Gurugram-based NEET PG On-line Coaching platform PrepLadder in July 2020 for $50 million.[18]

The company acquired a major stake in Mastree, the K12 learning platform, by investing $5 million on July 12, 2020.[19]

The company acquired UPSC test prep platform Coursavy in Sept 2020.[20]

Notable teachers

Many notable personalities and public figures delivered classes under Unacademy's educational programs such as 'Legends on Unacademy'.[21]

Data Breach

In May 2020, Unacademy's security was questioned by a 'For Sale' ad on the dark web that promised to sell the sensitive information of 22 million Unacademy accounts for $2000. The data dump (as obtained and claimed by some researchers) contains name, username, email id, password and other details. Unacademy officials later confirmed that nearly 11 million accounts were compromised, but nothing valuable was leaked or misused. Unacademy reassured the fact that no sensitive information has been compromised in their official statement on the issue.[29][30]

Anti-Hindu Controversy

In May 2021, a teacher from Unacademy published a question paper in which the teacher portrayed the Hindu community as a violent community and the Muslims as a peaceful community. This sparked outrage on social media and was condemned by many social media personalities. A day later Unacademy published an online apology.
