Hey. I blocked that IP right away because I've seen that before, that vague attempt at redirecting, a few days ago, but I can't remember where. This is clearly a happening thing for someone. Thanks for protecting. Drmies (talk) 16:02, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Absent referent

Hi Ansh, I went to add something to this article today, and discovered it had gone, per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Absent referent (2nd nomination). That shouldn't have been deleted; it's a completely valid concept, often used. SarahSV (talk) 02:11, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

Then recreate it, I guess. The version that was deleted was a mess of mostly unsourced
WP:SYNTH; I'm sure you can do much better. ansh666
02:17, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
There were versions in the history that seemed better, but that meant it needed to be edited, not deleted. SarahSV (talk) 02:21, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
There was rough consensus at the AfD to delete, as you can see yourself. ansh666 02:22, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
But there was very little input. When an article has existed for 12 years, and has multiple editors and sources, I think it must be very unusual to delete it after one week on the say-so of three people. SarahSV (talk) 04:35, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
Well, what do you want me to do now? If you really need to restore it, go ahead, but looking at it, it's probably better off as a clean rewrite. ansh666 05:44, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi! I was having a look at the documentation for Twinkle where it mentions using this sandbox in AfC. That page has a long log of actions, but you most recently deleted and salted it in July. Can you confirm whether this page is supposed to exist or whether the Twinkle documentation should be updated? Thanks. Isa (talk) 19:53, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

I don't actually know. RHaworth was the first to create-protect it in 2017 after deleting, and it was later restored by Fayenatic london. Since WT:AfC has been deprecated as an area for article creation, we could change the article tagging sandbox to the new one at Draft:Sandbox, or create a specific draft sandbox for it (Draft:Sandbox for article tagging, perhaps, to mirror the user warning sandbox). ansh666 20:06, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
Well, I know even less than you do, but the latter seems like a good idea to me. I can do it if you have no objections. Isa (talk) 20:12, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
Sure, thanks. ansh666 20:14, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
Hm, the issue
Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/sandbox is the place now. It's a lowercase 's', which isn't salted. Should I just update the documentation, or do we still want to move it out of AfC? Or maybe we just don't care? Isa (talk
) 20:17, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
I think that page is specifically for testing the
WP:AFCH script, so I don't know either. Might be best to raise the issue at the talk page again to see if anyone else cares. ansh666
20:20, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
Will do, thanks. Isa (talk) 20:21, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{

    checkboxes already filled in.

Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled
doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure
    and unique to Wikimedia.

Info about deleted page

Hi. Please could you get me the date of this edit to a page that has since been deleted. For info: it's an example used at User:DexDor/Portals. DexDor (talk) 06:35, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

It's the edit changing "is" to "was", correct? The timestamp is 02:01, 15 June 2017. ansh666 07:00, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks - yes that's the one (I should have noted the details myself). DexDor (talk) 07:58, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

Vila Real Quelimane

Hi, the "team" in question does not exist (one of a long list of fake Mozambican football teams), you won't find any reference for it (besides I know Quelimane and Mozambican football, but that is personal knowledge, not relevant here). How do we go about deleting the article? Thanks for your assistance. Teixant (talk) 12:48, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

Hello A666: please restore all the Portal subpages you deleted via

Hi, I'd be happy to do so if you (or someone else, it doesn't matter) give me a list of pages you want restored. It's probably better to only do a few rather than all of them, in case it's determined that the single-page versions are better after all. ansh666 17:49, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

I'm trying to help untangle this knot and am starting with portals I know were perfectly fine before the "improvement" drive. I'd be willing to maintain this portal if necessary. BusterD (talk) 18:45, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Oh boy... This first one was easy, because I know the portal, the subject matter and the project. I'm going to clean some lumber for a bit to get myself up to speed. It's been years since I wrote portal code, and I didn't like it much then. BusterD (talk) 18:56, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are

Hello A, I have prepared User:UnitedStatesian/Ansh666 REFUND listing most of the portal and portal talk subpages you deleted as G6/G8 speedys; could you please refund them for me? In our ongoing efforts to compare the current with prior versions of portals, we need the subpages to exist or we cannot effectively make the comparison.
