Covina High School

Thank you for helping out. If you think I've been overzealous in copy editing feel free to revert me; I'm not big on the unsourced sections promoting high school clubs. Cheers, 99.155.206.229 (talk) 20:48, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks to you too! I agree that there had been too much unencyclopediac content ("WP is not your school's homepage or a recruiting/publicity tool"), and your trimming seems fine. DMacks (talk) 20:50, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Youngevity Page

Hi DMacks,

I'm Evan. I work for a digital marketing company and I'm tasked with helping Youngevity get an accurate post here on Wikipedia. I appreciate you deleting the old one, it was obvious spam (I didn't write it) and it saved me the trouble of deleting it. I was wondering if you'd be interested in collaborating on a new, objective one. I can do the writing but if you wouldn't mind checking it for voice and objectivity, I feel like we could work well together.

Let me know what you think.

rosocyanine, again

This isn't a new topic, but I don't know where to find the old topic. If you agree with my last post on the Talk:Rosocyanine page, viz.,

Fixed the missing H, thanks. Not sure exactly what you propose wrt the chloride, but you'll see where I put it. The structure is now "rosocyanine proposal 2.png". I'm not sure how best to make a negative charge by ChemDraw. The rest of the text is Arial 12. If you stay in Arial 12 and superscript the "-", I think it's too small and inconspicuous. What I've done for both negative charges is to change the size to 14, not superscripted, type a "-", and just move it into place.HowardJWilk (talk) 03:23, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

Direct page to structure is http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rosocyanine_proposal_2.png. Can you tell me how to put the new structure in on the rosocyanine page, or put it in yourself (and tell me how so I can do the same sort of thing the next time)?HowardJWilk (talk) 03:15, 20 August 2011 (UTC) Also, there's something on my user talk:HowardJWilk page: "CategorizationBot (talk) 12:22, 4 August 2011 (UTC) Image:Rosocyanine proposal 2.png was uncategorized on 3 August 2011 CategorizationBot (talk) 12:22, 4 August 2011 (UTC)" Could you tell me what it should be categorized under and how to put it under that category?HowardJWilk (talk) 03:29, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

My arguements on Ramdev's delhi protest

Hi DMacks,

I recently deleted an objectionable content from wikipedia page on Ramdev. You have restored the contents and have argued that it is based on a cited news story. Then, I suggest that arguements from both sides should be captured in the article. Here are two references that I would like you to consider to include: 1) http://www.deccanherald.com/content/169481/didnt-baton-charge-ramdev-supporters.html ... the police officer said they were forced to retaliate after Baba Ramdev's supporters started throwing stones and flower pots at them ... 2) http://www.newsbullet.in/video/india/11370-ramlila-ground-cctv-footage-recovered- The Delhi Police said they have CCTV footage and TV grabs to prove that no woman was beaten by them.

Both are news channel websites.

Article-dates are also confused (mis-match of days and dates). Electrolytic reduction

Hello! I'm very sorry it's been such a delay in responding to your post about the

Cannon's talk page. It'd be incredibly helpful if you'd like to create a new heading on that page, especially now that we have a QRpedia code up directing visitors to that article. (We're also working on possibly releasing to Commons an animation of the cannon undergoing electrolytic reduction; but just have to push it through the final approvals.) Please let me know if you think you could help & if you need any additional resources. I can do my best. LoriLee (talk
) 18:52, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

No worries on the delay. I responded on the talk-page. In addition to animation, might be good to have a simple schematic diagram of the apparatus (what's submerged in what, what's wired to what, etc.). Those sorts of things are especially useful when paired with the actual chemical equations that are happening (similar to parts of the Chloralkali process article). I'll be a bit sporadic for the next few days with start-of-semester chaos (but this might make a good "useful in the real world" application of redox beyond the usual industrial cases!). DMacks (talk) 19:27, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
Great, thanks so much! I replied as well. I'll definitely pass along your diagram suggestion. That's a good point. Once again, I appreciate it! LoriLee (talk) 19:38, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
Thank you! I appreciate you adding the redirect. I know that you're busy with classes starting up. We're about to add our video of the cannon to Commons, but for now it's still here. LoriLee (talk) 15:55, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Chembox

DMarcks, A while back, you responded to an issue I raised on the Talk:Bleomycin page about the chembox being really large. You said "InChI is not allowed to have breaks" and that it was a machine readable blob. None of the InChI data appears to be links of any kind, so near as I can tell no machine is reading this (none as a web link ). No , I didn't change the box back, but I'm curious as I see nothing that would cause this to be read. SO, what's reading that string ? @-Kosh► Talk to the VorlonsMarkab-@ 16:23, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

If it were a matter of the field linking out to a database or other site, it could be piped so a cleaner displayed string could cover an ugly link. But the goal is to have the page as seen be web-crawlable, so web-crawlers google or special-purpose chemistry sites can find it. "Structure -> InChI" is supposed to be a purely mechanical process (doesn't depend on how it's drawn, language, etc), so I can then google for that string and find the aricle (if there is one) regardless of whether I draw it in a weird way and without having to know any of its chemical names (which could be many and/or I might not know them, and the ones I might know might not be mentioned in the article). It appears that Mike Altman is currently a technical director at Pixar. If this is the same Mike Altman, then he does deserve his own article and it should be updated with his works. If not, then I agree "Mike Altman" should be merged into "Suicide is Painless".108.23.147.17 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 05:26, 12 September 2011 (UTC).

I don't know what "a technical director" is to be able to judge its notability (titles often have specific meanings in certain industries that either oversell or conversely underrepresent their importance). But if there's
notability. DMacks (talk

Re: Negative numbers

ASCII character 45 is the minus sign. It's been that way since the earliest days of computing. Using any other dash-like character yields nonsense when the resulting information is read by a computer. As an exercise, try cutting and pasting the string −40 (−40) into a spreadsheet program, such as Excel or OpenOffice.org Calc, and compare the results with the string -40. −40 is interpreted as a string, not a number. — QuicksilverT @ 14:37, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

MOS:NUM is pretty clear that we're writing text not computer data though. I didn't like it at first either, but there's widespread support for using typographically correct (vs ASCII-only) symbols here. DMacks (talk
) 14:40, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
Just because it's currently in the Wikipedia Manual of Style (MOS) doesn't mean that it's right. The MOS is largely written by the blind leading the blind, people who have no understanding of how computers and computer programs work. The MOS has changed over time; I've long ago stopped arguing with the people who immerse themselves in it and just rely what I've known for the last 40+ years that works or doesn't work. — QuicksilverT @ 14:46, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
Indeed it's a mess. But all editors usually wind up getting for their efforts to make article-level changes against it is a block, not a thanks or a start of a discussion that leads somewhere useful:( Getting something like {{convert}} sane would be a huge first step that would have wide-spread results. The folks who work on it have somehow kept their world just separate enough from the MOS that discussions are actually feasible rather than endless drama. Fiddling with infobox data is a poor first step because their formats and uses (and perhaps parsing and connections to off-wiki sites) are often known only to the folks who work on the infobox itself. For example, there's consensus that hyphen isn't "right" for temperature values in chemboxes (I assume consensus typography is based on ACS published styleguide more than wikipedia's goofiness). But hyphen is used for calculated temperature fields (but solely due to inertia). Again the chem folks seem to be able to keep their style-guide discussions more sane than general MOS. Water fueled Vehicle Redaction

The information you insist on adding isn't "unflattering" it is irrelevant and unnecessary to the topic. The topic is about the vehicle not about how its not plausible. Additionally the information regarding false claims is NOT pertinent. The article is not about what a water fueled vehicle is not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Krisrsu (talkcontribs) 16:09, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

The article is about the vehicle and the claims that it works and the dispute/contradictory claims that it doesn't/couldn't. You'll definitely want to discuss removal of it on the talk-page, rather than getting yourself blocked for edit-warring against the existing consensus there that this sort of material is proper. DMacks (talk) 16:12, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for threatening me with being blocked because I have a view other than yours. I didn't know one persons opinion constituted a "consensus". All of the information I edited isn't based on my "opinion" at all, but rather by fact. Interesting you highlighted the importance of being neutral while editing, yet you allow this article to be excessively negative toward the proven concept thats being discussed. Count the number of arguments against the idea in the article and you well see that it is obviously negative toward the concept of the water fuel. Many examples of how its not plausible are included and nearly none that are pro-water fuel. Thats not a neutral article. I'll submit the article for a neutrality review. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Krisrsu (talkcontribs) 16:24, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

I warned you based on your approach to getting your way, not on what your way is. But I also advise you to read
WP:NPOV, since "neutral" does not mean 50/50 pro/con, so you will know what wikipedia's policy is (since that will be the standard used to evaluate your concerns when you seek review). DMacks (talk
) 19:28, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
Funny note: when I looked at the diff between Krisrru's version and the NPOV version using pop-ups, it looked like the article said "A water-fuelled car is a hypothetical
automobile that derives its energy on news coverage, and the Internet." Which I think is a great description of the car, possibly better than the "real" one. Qwyrxian (talk

Question

Regarding your delete of the File:CYRILLIC_LETTER_DZHE.PNG page yes the file was moved to commons correctly; at commons, but for some reason when you go to File:CYRILLIC_LETTER_DZHE.PNG the file page on here. You don't see a transclusion of the image, and/or on the pages where the image was shown. Where the file was included the image is not appearing but just showing red links to the deleted file page, instead of transcluding them. I am going to try and train the editor on the

The person who put this up has been reprimanded in the past by the Museum's Trustees for misrepresenting the Museum. In that vein, the Museum would appreciate that the deletion remain intact. Replied on your talk-page (please keep any further/followup discussion there so it's not dispersed across many places). DMacks (talk) 09:23, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

The reference cites do not refer to the Museum's conductor training. Because this is a insurance liability issue, it is the policy of the Museum not to advertise this issue on a public forum. Okay, but...

The only thing I've been changing is "Bella Swan" to "Bella Cullen" in the articles about the last two films coming out. I mean that is the character's new name. If you wish, I could instead put "Bella Swan/Bella Cullen." Do you think that'd be acceptable? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Super123Xxxxxxx (talkcontribs) 11:26, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

And that's exactly the change of yours that others dispute. I agree with them (for exactly their reasoning), and I would also think the listing of both is not good either--no reason to keep repeating all the names, just list the one that is most correct (per credits, per title of WP's own article about the person, etc.) and some one place mention the correspondence. It would need to be discussed on the article's talk-page so it's public for everyone interested in the article to see, not buried on my talk-page where nobody knows to look. Destroy She Said article

You chose to delete my article on Melbourne rock band Destroy She Said under Section G11:

I would contend that the article falls under the following criteria:

'An article about a company or a product which describes its subject from a neutral point of view does not qualify for this criterion.'

If you take the time to read the article you will see that there is no subjectivity, the article merely states when the band began, who the members are, discography and where it has recorded its product. It is describing the band and its music from a neutral point of view.

Please clarify this decision and please point out where I have strayed from neutrality, otherwise, please return my article to wikipedia.

Hi DMacks, regarding this, I understand the concern; I was not aware that the concept of Gold medals to toppers was India (or probably Commonwealth) specific. new question

I uploaded some images for my article U. Ray and Sons yesterday, under the fair use copyrighted policy. I got repeated bot messages for inadequate tagging and licensing. I went back and checked the copyright status of the texts and discovered that they had expired under the Indian Copyright Act, which states that any creative text or image reverts to the public domain, after sixty years of the death of its originator. SO I changed the status to Public domain on the pictures and was tagged as a vandal. I am writing this Wiki Article as a part of a University assignment and have no intentions of going against the spirit which wikipedia works by. How do I solve this problem? Thanks.

BanerjeeSohini (talk) 05:16, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Please read the change you actually made--you did not change the status as you say. For example, this change you made is the type that led to the vandalism warning. You stated there "This is a local copy of an image on Commons, uploaded to ensure protection because it is one of the 100 most-used files on the English Wikipedia" and you stated "This image or media file is available on the Wikimedia Commons as File:Abol Tabol HukoMukhoHyangla Sukumar Ray.JPG". None of either of those statements is true. And you said "it consists entirely of information that is common property and contains no original authorship" but it is clearly an artistic drawing, a creative work made by someone. I am not familiar with the India copyright laws, however, "copyright expired" is very different than "not copyrightable". {{
verify that it is indeed over 60 years old. DMacks (talk

"Gramatik" necromancy

Hey, I noticed that there was an old version of Gramatik deleted by you sometime in the past for copyright infringement. I'd like to take another crack at starting the article. Gramatik is a rising musician, part of Pretty Lights' regular rotation now, and I was just wondering if there was anything worth salvaging from the deleted copy. Thanks, Semitones (talk) 06:24, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

I have no idea if any of the ideas are worth keeping, but anything your write using copyvio as a starting point for the content is still potentially tainted as a derivative work. I can restore it temporarily if you like so you can gather some ideas, but obviously you'd need to write the new article completely from scratch with cites. Question

I have a question for you what should the copyright tags/license tags be on this file? File:Range for the Java Razorfish.png --Clarkcj12 (talk) 17:13, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

According to the Terms of Use for the given source site, it is not "free" in wikipedia terms (prohibits redistribution and commercial reuse). Further, it is replaceable by a free equivalent that would serve the same purpose by taking a free map (for example, from Wikipedia:Blank maps) and marking areas of interest in some color in a graphics-editing program. DMacks (talk) 05:13, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks but I am not sure how to edit the picture to match the one or resemble the one that IUCN had on there website. Do you think you could help me? --Clarkcj12 (talk) 13:52, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Sorry I missed your response/followup question. But "sure!". If you can politely persuade someone to release a specific image under a license that is "free in the WP sense", it would certainly be an acceptable and welcome addition. Probably best if they follow Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. DMacks (talk) 05:51, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

SNUBA corrections

Dear DMacks..

I am the co-founder of SNUBA® Internationl and president of the company. The Wikipedia text information has many errors and I submitted corrections last week and were objected to. I want to address these discrepancies with the intent to see that correct information is indicated within the Wikipedia description for "SNUBA"

The company was founded in 1987 (a change I edited). Although under the entity name of SNUBA Inc., predecessor to SNUBA International, it should make no difference in this correction.

"pontoon" raft was modified to provide clarity to a layperson as an "inflatable" raft and the photo submitted was to provide further clarity for this edit.

The following comment or edit is false, and or not applicable to SNUBA: "Unfortunately for Snuba divers, in case of emergency, the Snuba diver is not provided with any emergency buoyancy system unlike a Scuba diver who has a buoyancy compensator, meaning that the Snuba diver must swim to the surface or tread water until help arrives, which could prove fatal." (Jimmayfield (talk) 07:08, 20 December 2011 (UTC)).

In case of an emergency, wherein the SNUBA participant needs to return to the surface, the guest is at all times connected, via an air umbilical, to a flotation raft on the surface. The guests are provided instructions (as a standard practice of our worldwide standards and procedures) to utilize the air line to hand-over-hand back to the surface. The hand-over-hand techniques controls the rate of ascent while providing vertical movement back to the surface and a surface raft. Guest do not have to "swim to the surface and tread water until help arrives." this edit comment is entirely conjecture and without fact or knowledge of our system and guest instruction. The sentence that follow this comment is useful, however, is insufficient to correct the inaccurate information in the preceding sentence.

Photo's were provided to give clarity to the overall system and an example of the air line use of vertical control. They were not intended for self-promotion, rather to provide an accurate depiction of the system. The photo currently in use is ambiguous with regard to the compilation of the system components or how SNUBA is utilized. The photo's provided should not be removed.

There may be some valid material you added, but the large majority was not...it removed cited content. Whether you agree with it or not (and even if you have non-public information supporting your position),
WP:MOS explicitly instructs not to use all-caps (except for acronyms) and not to use (R) or (tm) or other marks at all. DMacks (talk

Further corrections - SNUBA

Dear DMacks,

There is a serious error in the SNUBA description from information that is indicated as cited from DAN (Divers Alert Network), as follows:

"Based on certified diving agencys (mispelled), like PADI or NAUI, Snuba is slowly being phased out due to the number of the diving accidents that have been recorded due to the lack of certifications and training in involved.[13]"

This sentence is not only false (SNUBA is growing at an unprecedented level), there are no such references or citations to support this comment. Also, there are no claims of injury ever filed in court, or with our insurance providers over the past 23 years. Information related to this fact is available from the insurance providers of SNUBA's product, and professional liability insurance. This is a serious inaccuracy. It is slanderous, misleading, and completely without any supporting fact. I would like to address this edit within the SNUBA description as soon possible. simply conduct a Google search on "Snuba accidents" and you will not find any results that would fault the program, the equipment or the professional guiding that is provided with every SNUBA experience. There is an incorrect news story of a death in Oahu tourist, that was related to a Seawalking "helmet diving" activity, not SNUBA.

I appreciate your soonest attention to this edit.

(Jimmayfield (talk) 07:27, 20 December 2011 (UTC)).

Yup, that indeed looks unsupported by the cited #13 ref (and I couldn't find similar on that website
if it had been reorganized since it was added here). I actually do find lots of discussions reporting various problems and safety concerns from claimed experts, but not anything about reduced popularity. DMacks (talk

Snuba cited death related to SeaWalker / Snuba photo's

Dear DMacks,

I spoke this morning, with The National Sea Grant, publisher of the Article claiming a "Snuba related death" in Oahu, and they agree with the inaccuracy and also agree to preparing a correction. I spoke with Tera Bowling, e-mail: (E-Mail removed for security purposes) Telephone number: <phone removed> She is aware that Snuba International is trying to have this citing and reference removed from our Wikipedia word search. The statements made in this article are inaccurate, damaging (even though you have attempted to provide further clarification in the reference) and completely irrelevant to Snuba. My request is to ask that this reference and citing be completely removed. To include this information continues to give the impression of involvement. It should not be included within our information. I have included the e-mail to Tera Bowling, sent earlier today.

Can you also please explain the deletion of the photo's that I had submitted? The current photo is a confusing view and gives no depiction of what Snuba is. The photo's that I submitted provides clarity as to what the Snuba product is and a better understanding of its use.

Dear Tera,

Thanks for taking my call to discuss the August 24, 2006 article written by The National Sea Grant Law Center related to a claimed "Snuba Diving Death." As discussed, the article inaccurately states that a "SeaWalker" helmet diving death was somehow related to or involved "SNUBA." This is entirely false and SNUBA had zero involvement in this fatality. SeaWalker is an underwater helmet diving product where guests walk on the sea floor, and SNUBA is a guided touring experience where guest swim while breathing underwater using a proprietary SNUBA apparatus. There are virtually no similarities between SeaWalker and SNUBA other than both programs occur underwater. Wikipedia cites and references this article as part of the word search description for SNUBA. Wikipedia is highly relied upon as a source of neutral, impartial and unbiased facts related to common word searches. This article lacked proper research and or accurate statement of fact, and has caused SNUBA International potentially significant and irreparable damage. At this moment we are trying to have this reference and citing removed from Wikipedia and they are unable to do so since they believe they are relying on credible source information. We require immediate attention to this matter, including:

1. Clarification of this article. 2. Assistance with Wikipedia's editorial board to have this article corrected, and or removed based on irrelevance. 3. A letter written to SNUBA International, Inc., from The National Sea Grant Law Center stating that SNUBA had no involvement in this accident (which we need to be able to provide to those questioning this claim of a SNUBA related death).

I look forward to hearing from you, soon.

Sincerely,

Jim Mayfield <information redacted>

(Jimmayfield (talk) 18:57, 20 December 2011 (UTC)).

As I stated previously--twice--the sum of the edits involved with the photos were not appropriate, not passing judgment on any specific photo change. A single better image of that more clearly illustrates the device would certainly be welcome. As soon as there is reliable published info (note that personal communication does not meet
WP:RS) I'd be happy to use that to support removal or amendment of the content. Currently, our article states what the reference states, including noting that it is disputed. I sharpened the counterpoint, and left a tag with it reminding us to add a citation of the published correction when it becomes available. I've removed the various personal email addresses from your email-repost above to prevent harvesting by spam-bots. DMacks (talk
) 04:26, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks again for the response. I am taking you up on your offer to consider a single better image that will more clearly illustrate Snuba. Regarding the question of WP:RS, It is stated within Wiki reliability standards, that the criteria for publication is that the images must be from a reliable source, in the context that the source is by judgement "reliable for the statement being made and is the best such source for the context." (WP:RS Wiki "verifiable standards"). As president of the submitting company, of which owns the trademark "Snuba" and owns thousands of photo's related to Snuba, I trust that the source guidelines are are being met to your satisfaction. If not, I would like to know what more may be needed to satisfy authority of our photo submissions. I have uploaded to the Commons repository the following images for consideration:

I replaced the previous image--I agree that the previous one did not focus as much on the air supply aspect (rather was mostly about the divers). I also added a second that focuses on the raft+tank--that's the other key aspect of this equipment. If anyone on commons complains about the licensing/release of the images (i.e., "how do we know you are actually who you say you are and own the images?" or something), Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials lists several solutions (either posting them with a release on the company website or emailing OTRS). It's not quite like that. It's all of our burden to make sense and generally work to improve WP articles, not fill up with idle chit-chat (is why I pointed to
WP:3O so that it ultimately leads to improving the article). DMacks (talk
