re: your message

Hi David, I've left a reply to your message on my talk page -- Marek.69 talk 16:15, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have deleted this article because it was in French and already exists on the French Wikipedia. It therefore needs to be translated into English before being put here. You can, of course, work on it in your userspace before putting it into mainspace. LadyofShalott 19:17, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

finding templates

{{

helpme
}} I'm new here, and am attempting to work on enhancing English versions of French city pages. In particular, the heraldry (to start with)

French pages have their own templates, which mostly don't work in English. There is presumably some way to look for available templates to see if there might be an existing equivalent, but I don't see how.

I find a lot of the 'explanation' pages not very helpful. Of course, I'm jumping in the deep end, trying to translate some middling complicated stuff, so it's probably not surprising. --David V Houston (talk) 18:45, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You can use interlanguage links to find the English versions of many templates from the French Wikipedia. On the left side of many pages (including templates) on the French Wikipedia, you'll see "Autres langues" with links to the same page on other language Wikipedias, including English. If the English version of that page exists, and someone has added an interlanguage link, you can follow that link to find the name to use on the English Wikipedia. For example, I see on the page you're working on, User:David V Houston/Armorial of the Communes of Calvados, that you're trying to use a template called "Lien web". From the page on the French Wikipedia Modèle:Lien web, the left side of the page has a link to the English Wikipedia version, which is Template:Cite web, and that's what you can use. Please let me know if there are any more questions. Thanks! --Mysdaao talk 18:59, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks. I don't quite follow how to find e.g. Modèle:Lien web, but the hardest part is knowing either where to look for it or what to look for. You've given me some good places to start, and I will check in to them. Thanks, again.--David V Houston (talk) 19:07, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
signature in above bit appeared in the wrong place. fixed.--David V Houston (talk) 19:25, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, for the particular examples you gave, the links are active. OK, that helps even more. --David V Houston (talk) 19:09, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad I could help you. Interlanguage links are the best starting place if you're moving to work in a different language Wikipedia. If you're creating pages, it's also a good idea to create interlanguage links to help other editors. I saw that you had created Template:Blason-ville-fr, which has an equivalent on the French Wikipedia, so I added a link to the French equivalent by adding [[fr:Modèle:Blason-ville-fr]] to the bottom of the page, which created an interlanguage link. Similarly, if you're active on the French Wikipedia, I suggest you add an interlanguage link on Modèle:Blason-ville-fr by adding [[en:Template:Blason-ville-fr]] to that page.
If there's no interlanguage link for what you're looking for, then I see how it can be very difficult to find what you're looking for. I can only suggest you look at pages that might contain templates you're looking for here. If you don't find it, you can always ask me or someone else with the {{
helpme}} tag again by giving a description of what you want to find. Thanks and keep up the good work! --Mysdaao talk 19:53, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply

deleting templates

{{

helpme
}} when I first started work with adding heraldry (from fr wiki) to english articles, I created an English context template that was initially identical to the French one. The original name was Blason-ville-fr I have replaced that template with another, rather anglicized, called Blazon-arms

1) how do I tell if I got every occurrence of the version I am trying to replace? 2) if I did get rid of all references, how do I get rid of this unnecessary template?

Thank you --David V Houston (talk) 19:00, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To see what pages use a template, press What links here on the left side of the page Template:Blason-ville-fr, which will open Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Blason-ville-fr. Then press "Hide links" and "Hide redirects", and what will remain are transclusions, which are pages that are using the template as it was designed to be used.
If you are the original author of a page and the only user to make substantial changes to it, you make request a speedy deletion under criteria
G7, "Author requests deletion", by placing {{db-g7
}} on the page.
Please let me know if there are any more questions. Thanks! --Mysdaao talk 19:12, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ha! Most of the links to the side I just find confusing, so I guess I missed the what links here. That's a REAL help. OK. I found a good half-dozen links I'd missed, fixed them, and put the code on the page. That's the template page itself, right? not the talk page or anything? Anyway... You sir, are a scholar and a gentleman (or perhaps lady <grin>?). THank you.
Yes, the code {{db-g7}} goes on the template page itself, not the talk page. As you can see, it has already been deleted by an administrator because of your request. Thank you for your kind words. I am always glad to help! --Mysdaao talk 19:56, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: about AWB

I'm so sorry, I just want to help Wikipedia as much as I can. Please forgive my mistakes. C6541 (TC) 01:29, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

no problem, you found a bunch of fixes that needed to be made, and I appreciate that. 'Fixing' things (especially formatting that other people use) is a trap that I fell into myself<g>. Anyway, thanks for caring. (I hope I didn't come across as too annoyed - while I did 'undo' your change, as that was the easiest way to get the blank lines back, I did implement all the other changes, I think. It is so easy to miss errors, the more eyes the better.

The article Armorial of the Communes of Nord has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

List of as such not notable things. It is logical to add and describe coats of arms to each individual commune article, as has been done. It is not a suitable list for Wikipedia though to have a 4 page, 200K total list of coats of arms of (mostly) small villages in the same region.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be

deleted for any of several reasons
.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{

dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page
.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{

Yes, I will remove those deletion tags. <gr>You're obviously not a herald if you think an Armorial is 'not notable'<gr>. If you look, for instance, at the French Wiki pages, every single (mainland) department has an Armorial, just like this one. If you really think this has to be removed, you need to remove those for consistency's sake. I have posted at Projet:Blasons asking for some contributors there to weigh in on this issue, so you won't think that this is just me. I am aware that the heraldic community on English wiki is weak - but that's a reason to want to strengthen it, not weaken it. IMO.

--David V Houston (talk) 12:33, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was obviously in a rather small minority with my concerns over these pages, so I'll let you continue working on them. Thanks for contributing, and my apologies to have bothered you with my apparently misguided concerns.
Fram (talk) 06:31, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply

Heck, I wouldn't call it misguided even (which might imply a wrong direction). You called it as you saw it, and other people called it as they did. 'Notability' is a bit of a grey scale and while I believe (and so did others) that, in this case, you read it wrong, you had some grounds for proposing deletion. Having looked at the debates on some of the other items proposed, the grey-ness is very visible sometimes<g>. But thank you for the response, it was gracious of you. Hi. There seems to be something wrong about the heraldry comparison between these two villages. For some reason the template you use sends to the redirect page Neuville instead of Neuvilly. I am not sure to have understood how the template works, so I haven't made any change. Do you know a way to fix that? Thanks. Hektor (talk) 07:54, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template:SharedArms

I noticed your template {{

SharedArms}}, and I saw that the text on the template page was a bit off. When I tried to correct this, it inadvertently changed the way the template appears in articles. I also notice the code for the template seems a bit overly-specific, so I'm not sure how other instances of shared/conflicting arms would be added.
