Hi Diannaa, I just joined GOCE today and have jumped into the backlog drive with gusto. I wanted to ask, though, about articles tagged with {{copyedit}} at the section level. Should we copy edit only that section or go ahead and do the whole article? Hi, BDD, and thank you for your interest in helping out with copy edits. For the purposes of the drive, you should only count the whole article if the whole article needs copy edit to the same degree as the tagged section. If only the one section is in bad shape then just count that. However, I normally do anything and everything I can think of to get the article into good shape: formatting citations, fixing dead links, adding an info box, rearranging photos—whatever I can think of, since on some of the more obscure articles it may be years before the next skilled wikipedian arrives. The other page I wrote last week Listen to Britain was start class and in the film project. Someone suggested I add it to MilHist. Some chap reassessed it, made it C and added a few citations needed. I added these refernces and re-wrote and expanded the first section, and he put it up to a B. And this page is much narrower in its scope, has far fewer refernces and a much, much smaller bibliography that this one.

I don't normally look at articles about movie stars any more, but I am the one who tagged the dead links on Brenda Song, way back in August 2011. It's been sitting there all this time with sixteen dead links, and I was concerned that it would lose its good article status, so I decided to try to find archive links using the wayback machine. If you don't know how to do this yourself, there's instructions at

Your editing is contrary to guideline. If you are unable to use a script to edit in compliance with guideline, then perhaps you shouldn't use the script. It seems especially contrary to a self-proclaimed "copyeditor" to knowingly and consciously refuse to follow guideline, and especially to use scripts to violate guideline. The cite templates were not installed with a script. I make them by hand. I thought the above problem was resolved when I told you on the 8th to remove the templates if that's your wish? Thanks for checking. There are still hundreds of pages of source material to be read and there will be tons of movement in the refs between now and when we're done, given that we've barely started. When it's done, I'd be happy to have the tool run against it check the "broken refs" - but they're not really broken - what you're seeing are typing errors and such in the harvard refs on a page that's actively being worked. That happens; first we have to get all the text referenced, rewrite, reformat, and then tidy. But you know that drill.

Okay!

1. Go to the Wayback Machine home page: http://archive.org/web/web.php
2. Put the url of the dead page in the box. Click on "Take Me Back"
3. You will next see a screen that looks like this: http://wayback.archive.org/web/*/http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/feature/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003220466
4. See at the top where it says it's been crawled 15 times all the way back to October 20, 2006, for the example given. Click on the blue link that says "October 20, 2006". It will load the page for you, often even for content that is now behind a paywall. You can then verify that the desired material is present in that archived version. If it is not, you can try other archived versions close to the access date given by the person who placed the citation in the article. All the captured versions are shown as black bars on the band at the top of the web page. The date for the version you are currently viewing appears over towards the right.
5. Copy the url from your address bar; that's your archive url. Make a note of the archive date and put the info in your cite.

I don't know which Fame series he was in, so you will have to resolve that one yourself. I removed the brackets from Black Roses, as the link goes to a diambiguation page, and none of the articles listed there is about a film. The material on the film career is unsourced; please add sources. Wikipedia itself is not considered a reliable source; it has to be from somewhere else. IMDb is not considered a reliable source.

After proofing several other articles, with many remaining punctuation problems (and continuity), I think the easiest solution will be for me to proofread, and update, other articles when the GOCE May drive ends. At this point, I do not want to push for extra editing, in the last few days, while everyone has their ongoing schedules in progress. Unlike other members, I do not participate in the other June drives, so I will have those 30 days to re-edit hundreds of articles for obvious punctuation which has slipped through the rapid edits. Hello Diannaa. If you look at the talkpage for the above, you'll see someone has queried the unsourced figure given for the number of Jews who died in the Holocaust. (I expect you've been here before.) I've changed the main text to include the word 'estimated' ('approximately' would be an alternative but might raise doubts). This can be sourced (e.g. Snyder's Encyclopedia of the Third Reich gives the 6m figure), but as the person raising this may be a Holocaust denier, ideally I wouldn't want to use a Jewish historian as a reference. Also, I note that no other part of the page intro is referenced and wondered if this is policy before references appear in the main text. The figure is of course impossible to verify beyond stating that it emerged at the Nuremberg Trials (though I've been unable to pin down precisely where). Hilberg gives a figure nearer 5 million; Gilbert's Atlas of the Holocaust, nearer 5.75 million. I recall once seeing an estimate of 8.2m which was criticised as unreasonably high, given that no official overall figures exists. Lucy Davidowicz states that an estimate of 5.7m was given at Nuremberg and comments that it has proved "remarkably accurate". Kim Traynor (talk) 11:03, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

WP:LEAD states that all the information in the lead must appear somewhere else in the body of the article, so citations in the lead are considered redundant. Typically in Good Articles and Featured Articles, the only things with citations are direct quotes and contentious material about living persons. The figure of six million is a well-established estimate used by many historians; Yad Vashem has collected names of four million confirmed victims so far. There will be limits as to the further refinement of the exact tally as the remaining survivors pass away and will no longer be available to give oral histories. Six million may be a tad on the high side, but since so many were killed without their deaths being recorded, I am comfortable with rounding up to six million. I don't think we need to add the word 'estimated' or 'approximately' to our number, as it is obvious that the number is an estimate.
