Hello Edward. Glad to see you participate in the chem articles. We need people like you, and some skepticism because these articles are often highly imperfect. I am an editor who adds lots of content about industrial routes, but my knowledge is often based on reading, not direct experience. So your question is warranted. Here is a quote from Ullmann's Encyclopedia on Industrial Chemistry "Thermal Cleavage of Acetone. This variation of the ketene process (cleavage of acetone into ketene and methane [59]) has no economic significance for the manufacture of acetic anhydride today." Agreed that using acetylene and Hg is a little strange. My understanding is that Hg and acetylene routes are current only in countries - PRC, Soviet bloc - that tolerate a lot of pollution. They often rely on cheap coal as a hydrocarbon surrogate. But in the bad old days, lots of mercury was often used even in the West to induce reactions of alkynes. Here is a quote from another section of Ullmann's Encyclopedia (doi:10.1002/14356007.a01_031.pub2): "Wet Oxidation Process (Hoechst). The wet oxidation process ... was operated... until the changeover to ethylene.... In this method, iron(III) sulfate is added to reoxidize the mercury metal to the mercury(II) salt..." I agree that it would be expected for it to be mentioned in more sources - there are a couple of other articles (broadway.com) (thestage.co.uk) that state "first class degree" (who may have used talktalk as their source), but other such as Darling Judi (Miller) only go as far as saying she graduated. I had reinserted it as it matched the source given, but based on what you have written and the possible unreliability of the source I think it is probably best to leave it out. 'Graduated' is used on quite a number of Central alumni articles, in the pre-1986 context it simply means 'completed and left'. Previous to 1986, 'Central' awarded diplomas, which had no real value outside of the world of acting. This was true of almost all drama courses - and some other arts courses (eg musical instruments). Most of these drama school courses made the change as it became necessary for a course to be recognised as a degree course in order for students to get grants (and later loans). In the case of 'Central', the entire acting course staff resigned circa 1984 in protest at the change forced on them by the Governors, to what had previously been a wholly practical training, but which became a 'faux academic' course in their opinion. For rugby infoboxes there is a list of errors here: Category:Pages using infobox rugby league biography with unknown parameters. When you go to an article you can click edit and then preview and it gives a red message at the top of the article such as: "Warning: Page using Template:Infobox rugby league biography with unknown parameter "nickname" (this message is shown only in preview)." To let you know what the error is. Then I either correct or remove the parameter based on whether it’s a simple typo, incorrect, already covered in the main text, or needs a citation. Hello Edward. I have added some information to the Aldermaston Pottery page. It seems like there isn't one main person who created the page out of a special interest. The picture used full image syntax rather than just the file name as suggested in the infobox documentation – see template:Infobox musical artist. A forced fixed size (px) is generally only needed to enlarge small images and it overrides users preference settings for image display. You've edited the page about the William H. McCreery House. I own that house and my wife and I operate a wedding and event venue on the property. The legal business name is simply "The McCreery House" which is what I attempted to use in the main content as well as a link to the business website. Why was that changed? Can we not link to tour business site?

BTW - I've never updated a wiki page before and I'm only interested in this one because it appears in Google searches for our business and was showing incorrect information and a terrible picture which does not encourage people to visit our website. I'm mainly interested in directing traffic there, but I would think accurate information in Wikipedia is also important?

The article is primarily about the building rather than the business that operates there, but I can see why you would like to improve it. I changed the article because articles usually start with the full name in bold, which in this article is the registered name of historic building. The website link is still there at the bottom of the article, but I have now also added it to the infobox, and added: "also known as The McCreery House" to the first line.

To encourage people to want to find out more (and visit the website) the article would benefit from being longer - firstly adding sections on the architecture and history of the building – there is lots of info given in the nrhp listing (reference 3) which could be useful, and then add a section about its current use. The WikiProject National Register of Historic Places

Most infoboxes have parameters such as image_size= or upright= that can be used to adjust the display size. Template:Infobox spaceflight uses image_size= which defaults to 220px wide if not set, but can be changed if needed – for tall images it is also possible to set the height rather than width by putting an x before the number – for example x250px - EdwardUK (talk) 17:24, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

All material on Wikipedia articles must be attributable to a reliable published source, so if the information regarding Oliver's Mount has changed then a citation needs to be provided to support the changes otherwise it appears to be "original research" which is prohibited on Wikipedia and is usually reverted or removed. Hi - you've been good enough in the past to go through a few articles I wrote and replace my 'cite web' reference templates with the 'Historic Environment Scotland' template. Since then I've been trying to avoid making other people tidy up after me by using that template myself when writing articles - I wonder, though, whether I'm doing it wrong.

Generally, when I insert a ref, I use the 'cite' tool above the editing window, and select one of the standard templates from the drop-down list - web, news, book or journal. This is fairly easy and convenient, but since you changed my first few article, whenever I now cite a Historic Environment Scotland template, I find myself going back to an old article, finding the template you added, copy/pasting it into my new article, and manually changing the code with the right details. Essentially, it's significantly more of a hassle than just citing it as a standard web reference.

I'm sure I'm missing something here - is there a smart/easy way for me to insert a template like that without going through a whole load of hassle? A script I have to install or something? Any tips would be much appreciated. Cheers GirthSummit _(blether) 18:24, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I not aware of any tools or scripts for making it easier to use the template, also I haven't seen anything similar for use with the NHLE template (which the Historic Environment Scotland template is based on) – my method for using such templates is to cut and paste from a text document I've created which has blank copies of the non-standard cite templates I use most often. There are a couple of reasons of using the template – dead link management and uniform appearance.

The main benefit of the template is that if the website for the database changes then we only have to update the template rather than all of the pages on which it is used. In the past the databases for listed buildings across the UK have changed websites a few times, but the reference numbers for each listing stay constant. For Scotland it was "data.historic-scotland.gov.uk" before becoming "portal.historicenvironment.scot". These changes caused the standard citations to become dead links thus creating a lot of work to archive/replace each of them, whereas with the template it would have been possible to update all these pages with just a couple of edits as was done with the England template in March 2015. Currently the Scotland template is used on only about 1500 pages, but for the England template the figure is about 14000.

The template also produces a consistent look to these citations regardless of editor as most people will probably only use 3 or 4 main parameters (typically num, desc, and access-date) unlike with cite web where individual editors often use different combinations of author, work, website or publisher. Thank you for your recent edit on the above article. You were more justified in doing that than you may have realised. I created the article and knew about that complaint at the time, but omitted it from the article for a reason. It is true that his relatives made such a complaint, but whether he was guilty or not is beside the point. The accusations became official just when a BBC team was researching for a documentary on Bunting's conservation work, and in response the team promptly withdrew plans for the programme. I understand that the withdrawal was not only about possible public exposure of vulnerable people who may have suffered, but also about rumoured suggestions of heavy bribery and/or political pressure from certain major chemical company interests whose reputation might have benefited from such revelations. I would think that this matter would fall under WP biography guidelines, so I would suggest that this kind of material is kept out of the article so long as there are living relatives who could be hurt by it. Hello Mr Edward, the reason I removed the deletion placed on this page by the first Editor was because she claimed that the page violates some of Wikipedia's guidelines under WP:NACTOR and it doesn't. Duke Elvis is a public and notable figure in the Nigerian movie industry and he has made a lot of contributions to the industry. He has played major movie roles in quite a number of movies and a very popular Nigerian TV series known as The Johnsons. He has a very large fanbase both online and offline in and outside Nigeria. It is obvious that the first person that placed the deletion didn't go through the page and make her research about Duke Elvis on the web through the citations and links I put on the page because barely after I created the page, she nominated it for deletion and it's for possible for a person to make a proper research about a person in less that 5mins. I can assure you that Duke Elvis is a notable figure, please I'm new on Wikipedia and don't really know how to go about this deletion process so please could you lend a helping hand cause I don't want my effort to go down the drain. Than I looked what you changed furthermore and I wonder on what basis you change articles? Gracinha Leporace wasn't a solo singer according to the introduction of the article: "Gracinha Leporace (born Maria da Graça Leporace) is a Brazilian singer who worked extensively with her husband Sérgio Mendes and his band." You changed in Izzy Stradlin "backgroud=rhythm_guitar" into "background=solo_singer", but that is not the only thing he does. In Rob Twizz you changed rapper into solo_singer, but he is a rapper (as a matter of fact rappers exist that can only sing falsely). What is mentioned at {{infobox musical artist}}, is that your have "six" choices:

• solo_singer
• non_vocal_instrumentalist
• non_performing_personnel
• group_or_band
• classical_ensemble
• temporary

I mentioned one case where "group_or_band" is concerned here above. But, there aren't six choices only, but there is in fact a seventh one as well: the choice to leave background empty. Now you have put data in the background field that is untrue. That surely is a problem, and you should correct all of them. It seems that we hold differing opinions on the matter - my edits were consistent with what is given in the documentation – had they not been then the coding of the infobox would have tracked them as containing parameter issues. I could propose modifications to the template, and I have not started with doing anything contradictory to the documentation because, as you point out, I am not capable of altering it myself, as is the case with any template such as this which is edit protected, nor have a made any changes to the documentation which would themselves be contradictory to the coding of the template. It is probable that many readers of the articles would be unaware of the significance of the color-coding resulting from the background parameter, and for those who notice it I am sceptical that they would be misinformed by it as it does not display any text on the article page as this is only visible in edit mode, so the only people to read the text would be editors who could be anticipated to be capable of referring to the relevant pages to clarify what is meant by the parameter, that it is a general color-coding system rather than an uniquely customisable description, whereas for more precise descriptive details there are other parameters available. I must fairly admit, that I wasn't aware that the content of this parameter is only changing the color of the banner, for which case my wording of disruptive editing has been too strong for what you did. This will give readers the (wrong) impression that the vehicles featured in the Wiki links are actually in the museum. Can we restore the actual vehicle images please? These vehicles are not all in the collection, it is a view of vehicles that may typically be present on a museum open day so would be more appropriate at the top. The links to other articles were intended to give additional information on the manufacturer and type of chassis, rather than link to specific individual vehicles. The thumbnails were removed as Wikipedia is not an image repository. They appeared to be quite similar and had no captions to explain their relevance causing them to add little to the reader's understanding of the subject. On other articles on bus museums, for example London Bus Museum and Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum, only a few images are used in the article to represent the collection, the rest being accessible through the commons link at the end of the article. The image of double deck buses is not well suited to top due to its size - the lead or infobox image should be no larger than upright=1.35 (equivalent to 300px). Hi EdwardUK, I'm currently taking Cullen House through FAC, and an issue has come up with Template:Historic Environment Scotland. If you take a look in the refs of that article, ref numbers 5, 31, 32 and 33 all use the template. It appears to be showing a double space between the name of the designation, and the bit where it says "(Category A listed building)". Would you be able to check whether it's something that I'm doing wrong, or if it's an issue with the template itself and, if possible, remove the extra space? @KJP1: – I adapted it from the Cadw template, it is basically a copy with a few things changed or removed, so it is the creator of that (who also created the NHLE template) who did all of the hard work. @Verbcatcher: I have had a go at creating the template, but it is slightly different from the others that I have previously worked on. It is based on a mix of Coflein, Cite ODND and Cite Australian Dictionary of Biography, and uses Cite encyclopedia so it took a bit of guesswork and there may be some errors that will need to be fixed. Also some of the existing citations for have ids that appear to have changed since it used wbo.llgc.org.uk so these will need to be repaired when adding the template. @Verbcatcher: Help with adding the template would be great. Ideally it will need to be added quite a few times, by different editors and using different combinations of parameters, to fully identify any bugs. I will mention it on the Wales wikiproject as some of the members may find it useful and have suggestions for improvements. One of the ways of monitoring and checking for problems will be the "monthly parameter report" of the template data but this won't be available for a couple of weeks. It is probably best to replace existing citations first before adding new ones - I have added "This external link template is underused... check here" to the documentation which can be used to find existing citations.

I have no tools for adding the template beyond simple copy and paste, when replacing existing citations it is usually fairly easy to edit the text and rename/remove the parameters, and when adding new citations I find it easiest to copy/paste the "commonly used" blank version and then fill it in from the website. (also if I plan to add it several times I copy the blank to a text document, add ref tags, the access-date and mode/fewer-links if needed, then use this to paste part filled versions into articles) EdwardUK (talk) 18:22, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have added this to several articles and have not found any problems. My observations include:

The first letter of the id code specifies the language of the article: 's' for English (Saesneg) or 'c' for Welsh (Cymraeg). It appears that all the articles are available in both English and Welsh, with the Welsh articles at bywgraffiadur.cymru, for example:

• https://bywgraffiadur.cymru/article/c12-YATE-NIG-1944

Perhaps the article identifier should be defined as the characters that follow the 's'.

It might be helpful to describe more of the available parameters on the documentation page, for example for DWB articles with multiple authors:

There are thousands of citations of the dictionary, and it may not be feasible to convert them all. I have made a modest start, and have worked on a few articles with a reasonable high profile with a view to giving the new template more exposure to editors. I did think of automatically including the 's' until I spotted some articles cite pages that started with 'arc_s' (used for archived versions). The template should work with the parameters from Cite encyclopedia, I initially listed only the most basic ones, but descriptions for any of the other parameters can be added if this would be helpful. I would estimate there is the potential for around 10,000 copies of the template as many of the biographies could be cited several times (for example on the articles for the person and their birth year and death year articles). There is no time limit for this so after the initial push to raise awareness (maybe 400+ translusions?) other editors will start to add it as part of their general editing. I notice you reverted my change to Stanley Hollis’s page re where he is buried from Linthorpe Cemetery back to Acklam Cemetery. If you hit the coordinates in Stanley’s Page it takes you to Linthorpe Cemetery not Acklam. My Mam is 84 and a very well educated lady and she maintains that Linthorpe is correct!

There are several sources that give the location as Acklam Cemetery (Morgan, find a grave, vconline) rather than Linthorpe. It looks like the error was with the coords, probably because both are located on Acklam Rd. There are more but I have not had time to add them. The Wales rugby website has all the results from the 2013 world cup (the same citation used for the 2017 results) and they look to be correct apart from their score in the final 44–40 which does not agree with other the match reports. On the talk page for the article, I have added a link to the European Rugby League website, they have several more of their matches – world cup, euros, and a few friendlies against France. Morning Edward - I'm back with another query. Now that the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales has statutory effect, a few of us have being doing some category creation for historic Welsh gardens. You can see where we've got to here, Category:Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales. I then tried to do this, User:KJP1/sandbox 5 Monmouthshire gardens, with the aim of ending up with list articles by principal area similar to this, Grade I listed buildings in Rhondda Cynon Taf, which will be familiar to you! Where I think I've gone wrong is I used an English/Historic England template as a basis, and the reference number links don't work.

So, my questions. Do we need a new template that could link to the Cadw data or could your RCT Grade I list be adapted to work for historic gardens? We'd certainly need a Designation, I/II*/II, column and a bit of thought about what others would be best. Would this be something you could help with, or do you know where I could ask? I don't know anything about setting up templates, so I've no idea how big an ask it is. If you were able to do the template, I'd be very willing to do the grunt work of populating it, from my failed first effort. People could then use the Monmouthshire one as the basis for the others. A template can be created, but is not yet needed. The list can be worked on as a wikitable and then changed to use a template later. To get something consistent with other articles my suggestion would be to create something like the wikitable for the Monmouthshire listed buildings, but replace the "Cadw listed building header" with a custom version that adds a designation column such as:

This should give the table above which is similar to the RCT I list (I also had a go at Grade II* for RCT and Merthyr, but never finished). You may which to separate out the "type" from the notes column but as almost all entries are park or garden this doesn't seem particularly useful. You could also consider separating the location and grid ref columns but placing them next to each other. I found fewer columns worked better as the notes appeared very narrow on smaller display screens. This can be experimented with to work out what works best before creating a template that may be difficult to change once in use. And it may be that minor variations in different lists are preferred, like leaving out the designation column if only one grade is listed - in which case a template my need a show=yes/no option which is harder to code. It may just be due to device settings as they all appear correct on my laptop. None of the changes should have had any impact on the images which are all set to a default size, and the coding for the parks template is the same as the listed buildings template which has not been altered. Could you please tell me why I keep getting removed as Kyle’s partner I know you didn’t do it this time but someone keeps removing me. I am doing an article on Sunday with a paper I hope that finally sorts this out. My documents are a Police Report saying we shared the same address. His death certificate shows I am/was his de facto. Mel666A It was most likely removed by the other editor because they could not find any mention of it in the "cult hero" article, and the problem with the "Births, Death and Marriages" citation is that, as the source document is not online, it is difficult for other editors to verify what it contains. For more about this see Wikipedia:Verifiability. If the information is also mentioned in another website or newspaper report then this would be a better source to use, or if none can be found it may be best to wait until the paper publishes its article which can then be used as a citation. This page: Wikipedia:Citing sources, will be useful for how to a citation, but it could also be worth looking at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest as it may be better to place and edit request on the article talk page. It'll never end!

Thanks for your update here, Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales which has led me to do this, Welsh National and Universal Mining Disaster Memorial Garden.
