You do realize that this is a collaborative, consensus based project? So by comments such as "the regulars at DYK have hammered out a consensus" and "(should not be decided by the community) rather than decided upon by DYK regulars (does he support the same extreme view for changes to, say, policy pages?)" that only regulars at a page can participate? Sounds rather unwiki to me. So, when an arbcom case comes up you're saying only arbcom regulars can participate and others, such as most DYK people can't since most of them don't hang around RFAR? DYK rotation

I know you've had a busy day and I'm so glad you were able to keep DYK running while so many folks, myself included, were very much out of pocket. There's no rush since it won't come up in rotation for about 10 hours from now but was there a specific reason you moved the Next Update hooks to queue 1 instead of queue 4? Right, the current set on the main page was in queue 1 so the next set will load from queue 2. Then it'll load from queue 3, then 4, then 5, then 1 again so I would have expected that with 2 and 3 full and 4, 5, and 1 empty that you would have moved the latest set of hooks assembled in Next Update to queue 4 so they'd come up right after queue 3. - Dravecky (talk) 12:31, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Editnotice vandalism

Hey Gatoclass, you probably aren't the right person for me to ask about this, but maybe you'd be able to point me in the right direction. I recently noticed some confusing vandalism to the edit notice for my talk page; see this revision. But the weird thing is, that text that shows up on the editnotice itself doesn't show up in the edit window...it seems to have been hidden somehow. Furthermore, no edits from anyone else show up in the edit history, so I don't know who inserted the text or when--but I can guarantee that I didn't vandalize my own edit notice when I updated it. Do you know if there are any admins who have access to tools that can find more detailed information about what has happened to pages, since it appears that someone was trying to circumvent the site's technology? I don't really know anything about how all that works. Thanks,

If it helps, here is the edit where I updated the editnotice to the version that was later vandalized; as you can see from the diff, I didn't purposely insert any weird text, but whatever change was made later caused the text to display in that and the next three revisions of the edit notice, until just now when I reverted to an earlier version.

Pardon the intrusion but I just repaired the vandalism to the {{
tlf}} template. It was this vandalism that was inserting the obnoxious text. Any edit to your Editnotice page will force an immediate update to the clean version. Otherwise, it will get updated in the next day or two when Wikipedia's servers use slow periods to automatically update articles with updated templates. - Dravecky (talk

The template is indefinitely semi-protected. It might even be appropriate to have in indefinitely full protected, since most non-admins don't have any need to edit it AFAIK, but I didn't think about that until just now and the semi-protection request has already been done.

Well there is no point in changing it back after adding those little strings, but perhaps the output didn't break because a value+unit item was longer than usual and the conversion template protected it from breaking (as dictated by MOS)? --BorgQueen (talk) 07:18, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

re your mesage to my talk page, it is not yet time to update... In theory the next update time is around 7-8 UTC, as the last update was done around 1-2 UTC. What I am asking for isn for you guys to allow me to attempt to debug the bot at 830, which is 30-90 minutes past the correct time for the dyk updates. It is not a content issue at all. The POV issue you raises (article name) was discussed 4 months ago, and your opinion did not gain support. a {{POV}} should not be defacing an article just because you didn't get your way. NoCal100 (talk) 15:06, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Combo New / Nominate DYK Question

The combo Steelmark / Logos and uniforms of the Pittsburgh Steelers currently listed at DYK on the main page was a combination of a new article for Steelmark and the nomination of Logos and uniforms of the Pittsburgh Steelers created by another editor. I've never created a DYK like that before and I'm not sure if I am eligible for a nomination for Logos and uniforms of the Pittsburgh Steelers in addition to the credit I already received for the Steelmark article. DYKsug template update

Hi Gatoclass, sorry it's taken me a while to implement what we talked about back in December. Anyway, I now have a dev version up here that, as you asked, auto-generates the credits even when there's more than one article. As far as I can tell it works correctly in all usual circumstances and even some unrealistic circumstances (such as when every possible contributor field is filled in). It will still have problems in the rare case of complex multi-noms where different people contributed to different articles, but in those cases I guess the nominator can leave a |comment= explaining that, and vetters can be wary to ignore the auto-generated credits.

Anyway, once you have a chance, take a look, experiment if you want (except, unfortunately, I'm using my sandbox right now for another project, so I would appreciate it if you could do the tests in a different sandbox; in any other circumstance I would welcome people to use my sandbox for testing the template, but right now I'm using it to update a long list article) and let me know if everything is ok. If everything is ok, I can update the real template.

Also, just so you know, Suntag and I were discussing changing the templates' naming scheme

On second thought, ignore the above; I've tested the updates enough and am going to update the real template now. But here's the real thing that you'll be interested in: I remembered your other request (getting rid of all the fields that show up in DYK noms now) and started trying to code a brand new template that could, hopefully, replace both DYKsug and DYKsuggestion. The results so far are at

The good news: it only requires one template, not two (as the current setup does); and you just subst the whole thing; plus, as you can see, there's no messy markup in the edit window (which, back in the day, was the whole reason I had made two templates, to avoid having messy markup...now it looks like that's not a problem anymore); everything having to do with |expander= has been removed; and it doesn't show all the empty fields, as the current setup does.
The bad news is pretty obvious: I haven't yet figured out a way to comment out the credit templates. What happens is, there is a ton of markup around the templates (to do stuff like not produce {{DYKnom}} if there isn't a nominator or if the nominator is the same as the creator/expander, not produce templates for articles that aren't in the nomination, etc.)... Normally this isn't a problem because all the markup disappears during the subst'ing (as you can see in the example I gave above), because all the places that say {{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>#if: basically tell all the markup to disappear when you subst it. But when I try to comment out the whole section of credit templates, it also comments out all of that stuff, and therefore there's nothing telling the markup to disappear. You can see the result here ... not a pretty picture at all. It seems like what I need is some way to not put the <!-- in until after the rest of the markup has been executed...but I don't know of any way to do that. I might have to enlist some help before I can make any more progress.

DYK queue listings

I've removed the queues from T:TDYK, and updated the relevant part of "Where's my hook?" so it points to Template:Did you know/Queue rather than the bottom of T:TDYK. Would it be possible to transclude the queues in Template:Did you know/Queue, to make it easy to view all five queues rather than having to click all three? I think you could do that by replacing the following code at Template:Did you know/Queue:

More template stuff

Hey Gatoclass, I just wanted you to know, in the off chance that the DYK community decides not to implement the new template (the one that just creates the hook and credits, without all the empty fields), I have also been working on the side on trying to get the current template to only show fields that actually get filled in. I'm slowly getting it there...right now I've gotten it to "work" finally, in that it only shows the fields that are filled in and the code still works, but it messes up the spacing/lines (which pretty much defeats the purpose of the templates, which was to present the hook and contributors neatly so they would be easy to grab for next); here is what it looks like. If I can get that issue cleared up, then we can probably choose between using the new template, or the old one (updated so that it doesn't take up as much space).

That sounds fine with me. The |rollover= thing is something a few people have been asking me to do for a while, and for most of that time I didn't do it (i just said "adding alt-text is the responsibility of the person promoting the hook to Next"), but I decided to put this in now because it's easy...it's not mandatory for people to use, and we don't even have to include it in the main instructions (on the editnotice or whatever) if it will get too confusing...but I figured now at least it's there for the people who want it, and for those who don't care they don't have to worry about it (and it'll leave the message there to hopefully get people's attention that they need to add the text manually...I remember a couple months ago 7xxxxxx mentioning that there was a problem with people putting DYK images on the main page without rollover text).

Hm...well, since it's the template that inserts [[File:{{{image}}}|right|100x100px|{{{rollover}}}]] when a person wants to put an image in, there's no way to add the rollover text manually (other than re-editing the section after you make the nomination). We could require the user to type out the whole image string (right now they just need to type "Example.png" or whatever, and the template puts in the rest of the stuff above), but I feel like stuff like that would defeat the purpose of having a template.
I guess I could make it prominent, in the instructions, that when you put something in |image= then you should also put something in |rollover=... that would add instruction creep, but take away the problem of people not specifying rollover text (assuming they read the instructions...there are some users who don't, such as one with whom I have left numerous friendly messages explaining how to use the current template and he still does it wrong). We could even go as far as making it produce some sort of ugly error (like You forgot to specify the rollover text, bro!) to force people to use |rollover= but personally I think that's less elegant than just inserting the quiet <!--Insert rollover text here--> when they don't use it, and counting on the promoter or some later editor to add it manually.

Oops...I just realized I misunderstood your previous message. Anyway, yes, there will always be a |rollover= field for people to use, and hopefully it will encourage them to start doing that...the default only happens when people don't put anything in that field. I think it's probably best to just leave the default at <!--Insert rollover text here-->.

I know it is a bot that awards the credits now and it seems to have missed the second one (for the viaduct) somehow. Fielding

I wanted to get your opinion on this. The first two , Love in Several Masques and The Temple Beau are almost complete. They contain the bulk information minus leads (leads and summaries will be written together). However, it will give you a sense of the size of the body of the articles. I still have three more sources to add, and I am not doing full plot summaries (five act plays, 40 pages each, probably a project best saved for a later date and a larger consensus so that it wont get too in depth). How do those appear in terms of size concerns? I would like a sense so I can plot how much more time I will be devoting to the bulk (so I can tell the other two I am working with so we can deal with grammar, formatting, linking, leads and summaries, etc). I wanted to note (I've been trying to connect all night and lost a few attempts) that I want your opinion because I don't want to throw together something just slop dashed but create something worth while. No other free sites offer this collection of information on Fielding's plays, and the work requires a lot of dedication and research that limits there from being any free versions (the cost of the complete 3 vol set of plays is now 600+ each, unfortunately). I want to make something that is well done for when they are displayed. Also, I kept some of the plot summaries short, but I can easily expand if there were any that stood out as too short. Also, I will put it up on the DYK talk page after I am done for the whole community to weigh in. Date formatting

While you were consulting wp:mosnum, you apparently missed the previous sentence, "with respect to British date formats as opposed to American it would be acceptable to change from American format to British if the article concerned a British subject". I take that to be an example of a substantial reason, and that it means that the converse is also true: it would be acceptable to change from British format to American if the article concerned a ship built in the US by Americans, owned and operated by the US Navy, and manned by Americans. By the way, the original edit of February 2008 contained both formats. Your reversion has restored the typo, so for many readers it is not an improvement. Happy editing! Cont from RfC on Arbcon enforcement

I hope you don't mind, but I wonder if we could carry on our discussion from there a little longer because your information has been most empirical and I don't know if my questions are appropriate there. To take your advice a little further, since there has been a POV template on the article almost since day 1. For certain issues, there has been no consensus and one "side" has simply given up the argument, or occasionally a new editor comes in and brings it up again, but it is/was consistently reverted back to the original (non-compliant, from my POV) edit. Some editors have taken the article off their watchlists because it is so frustrating. We have had a couple of RfC's and the consensus of non-involved editors seems to fall on my side, but it is not accepted or understood. For example, images... one side wants to put up lots of pictures of carnage, since a lot of carnage was involved. We say that putting up a lot of carnage reflects an POV against the other side. There was even one photo supposedly of a baby burned almost beyond recognition which came from a partisan site (which some editors did not think relevant) and the title explained that the baby was burned and run over by a tank. Fortunately, there was such obvious non-consensus that that picture did not make it on the page. But those who wanted such pictures simply put up other pictures (not quite as gruesome) demanding that to take them off was to violate

Gato, I just wanted to comment that I appreciated your comment regarding the pictures on Arbcon enforcement. A new user has shown up making the same points again [1] and the same editors using the same arguments and the only thing that happens is that everyone gets pissed off. (This even lead to a recent sockpuppet investigation of the new user and me -done & dismissed-, since the new user also tried to remove the photos!) I think the issue needs to be taken up (in a general way as you suggested) in some kind of arbitration or at the very least an RfC. The only problem with the RfC is that we had one over the burned baby picture, and it became clear that it would require an RfC over each and every picture that anyone might want to include. Thus the article needs guidelines. Any chance that I could ask you to point me in some direction? If I have to file something I would need some kind of template... I appreciate any help.

DYK template handover

It looks like you have some bigger stuff to worry about now, but just so you know, I have contacted the most active DYK vetters about the new template and solicited their input, and have made a couple minor changes to it (I added a |status= parameter so people can specify if the article is new or expanded, since some vetters seem to like having that clear...I'm hoping that can be a compromise between what they asked for and what you asked for, even if it does add another layer of complexity to the template; also, as you asked back in December, I added a note in it that says "Please check to make sure these credits are correct" when there's more than one article in the hook). As far as I can tell, everything is ready to make the switch on T:TDYK. I've tried to throw together a sample of a new T:TDYK edit notice, which we could put up temporarily (by replacing the contents of MediaWiki:Editnotice-11-Did you know with the contents of this) to hopefully ease the transition; the sample edit notice is at Template:NewDYKnomination/neweditnotice. Other than that, we would just decide how to best go about implementing it. I assume the easiest would just be to change the instructions, send a note to the regulars, and hope people start using the new one...and then wait two weeks or so for most of the {{DYKsuggestion}}s to be off the page; once all the old templates are off the page we could redirect them to the new ones (or, if the new template turns out to be unpopular during that period, we could always go back). Just let me know what you think, and when you would like to start switching over. It will be important, I think, to do the switch-over during a time when I am pretty available to help, since I am familiar with the template's code and can address problems when they [inevitably] come up; I'm afraid my code is not the most transparent (and since the whole template is subst'ed, I couldn't add comments or formatting to make the code easier to read), and if an urgent problem came up with the template and someone else tried to fix it they would probably have to spend an hour or two just figuring out what's going on in it, whereas I would probably be able to deal with it relatively quickly. Of course, in the long-term it's not desirable to have a template that only I know how to maintain, but I think with time other people will get familiar with it; it's just during the first couple weeks, when stuff is more likely to go wrong, that I will have to be on hand to address problems quickly.

Respectfully, when you suggested I was "reverting and prevaricating on talk pages", were you actually suggesting that I was lying in my posts? Because, my understanding of "prevaricate" is "to speak falsely or misleadingly; deliberately misstate or create an incorrect impression; lie."1 If so, I would be interested in knowing where I have been lying anywhere here. As well, I'd like to know where I've been reverting; the last time I reverted the Dendermonde info back into the article was well before Chrisld02 filed his ANI for input.
Additionally, I noticed that you didn't address the appropriateness of the posts being made by ThuranX. Tell me, do you find them at all polite? Would you be content to be treated like that? If you think that his method of posting is okey-doke, say the word. I don't care if he feels I am the antichrist, he doesn't get to to talk to me - or any other editor - like that.
Lastly, you asked what the big deal was about listing the info in the Joker article. At first, it just seemed like a few editors trying to keep the comic book world separate from the real one; sad and pathetic, but understandable. Later, it became apparent that the real issue was one editor filtering the reliability of the RS sources. We do not evaluate the factualness of our articles. Verifiability, not truth is the litmus for inclusion. Were you to conduct a Google News search for "Dendermonde" and "De Gelder" (the suspect's name), the top ten usable sources (excluding YouTube, blogs, etc) connects to the Joker term, and specifically Heath Ledger's portrayal of the character.
My problem - and I consider it a much larger issue than a paragraph in an article - is that one editor is misrepresenting the sources to say something they quite simply do not say. We are supposed to remain objectively neutral, not allowing our personal feelings to guide the use of sources. That's called POV editing. ThuranX is reinterpreting the data and presenting it as fact. We don't do that here. We ban people for less. So, yeah - I consider it kind of a big deal. Do we get to use our personal preference to cherry-pick our sources?
I am posting to address the consensus, seeking a new one. ThuranX has managed to post every single time I do - all of this after he has sworn to un-watch the article/cross the street to avoid me/etc., and his abrasive (do I even need to point out how beyond the pale he has gone where civility is concerned?) stifles all other commentary. I am guessing other folks don't want to deal with the dramahz of interacting/disagreeing with ThuranX. If you think that seems unfair, consider that no one else has responded. Okay, I am glad that you weren't calling me a liar. I don't argue for arguments' sake, as contentious2 would seem to imply; rather I think I tend to be firm in my beliefs, as tenacious3 seems to describe, but I guess a lot of that depends on what side of the argument you are on.
As to your arguments, I am not wholly convinced that the later source refusing to discuss the Joker-esque aspect is equivalent to a refutation of the earlier statements, but I find your argument the most convincing thus far. I will withhold comment on the subject for now.

Hassocks and I have used it to post some noms, and I haven't seen any problems; also, I've noticed the load times at T:TDYK are a bit slow again (probably because there are so many noms sitting there), so I'm getting eager to have a template that doesn't generate so much junk. Also, over the past couple days I made some tweaks so that |author= parameter now also works with |writer=, |creator=, and |expander= (the last two are for when people forget that things are a bit different and accidentally use the old parameter names—I myself have done that a couple times), so now you don't get errors when people use one of those. As far as I can tell, everything is working.

I imagine the only thing left to be done, really, is to update the instructions and the edit notice, so people know to use the new one. I left a message about that at

Hi - thank you for replying and your advice. At the very least, I want to use the passport as a reference for the physical description section, especially as there is very little in alternative available. As to "lesser class of citizen," I wrote that in reference to the status of a British subject which Indians had. While other Commonwealth nations created citizenships, Indians could not until independence. Until then, Indians didn't have any rights or freedoms that "citizens" usually enjoy. Don't forget to upload and protect the picture from the latest update. The "create a page" button is still there; I don't think the cascading protection prevents me from making a new file on En. Hey Gatoclass, do you think the in-your-face edit notice about the new template has been up long enough? If so, and if you think just about everyone who needs to know about the change knows by now, we can probably remove the chunk from the beginning of MediaWiki:Editnotice-11-Did you know (the first three lines, or the first five lines in the edit window) to make the edit notice take up less space. Template:User Wikipedian For/doc. It doesn't show up in my user subpage because there is no User:Rjanag/Template:User Wikipedian For/doc , but it will show up on the actual template when that is updated; the {{documentation}} template automatically finds a page with the same name and /doc at the end, and transcludes it. In the mock-up in my user space, you can see the documentation by replacing {{documentation}} at the bottom with {{documentation|Template:User Wikipedian For/doc}} ... but on the actual template page, the documentation will show up automatically. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs

Errors in the queues

    - stray "example" credits - not really an error, but while you're at it...

    - Canadian, Cara Duff-MacCormick hook

I've been fiddling with finding disambiguation links by automation, and I found it! There's already a DAB finder tool at
