For the Olympic athletes
Put possibly living if you can't find a date of death. Also go here User_talk:Canadian_Paul/Olympics and you can ask if someone is alive or not and he can add it to his list. (Well I did find someone earlier who put a bunch of people as living with no death dates-even if they were born in the 1890s!) Wgolf (talk) 15:52, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice, when i get the chance i am going to mail the sporting bodies to see if they can point me in the right direction to find out the dates, as they must be out there somewhere!! Iantheimp (talk) 16:07, 25 August 2014 (UTC) Welcome and be sure to mention them on that talk page as well! (I just found one that you put that the guy was born in 23 with no death date as of now)
Wgolf (talk) 16:21, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Here is a guide to see if they might be living or not (for Olympians)
Here: User:Canadian Paul/Olympics Wgolf (talk) 15:21, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks already added him to my list, if i start any bio's i always spend a bit of time to see if i can find a date of bereavement, and when i get time i will mail the relevant sporting bodies to see if they can update anything. --Iantheimp (talk) 16:47, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
Athlete articles
Hi Ian! Thanks for your work on starting Olympic athletes. Can I suggest a couple of tweaks to the style? The usual house style for the first sentence should be a short description of the person and their job, e.g.:
- Steven "Steve" Agar (born 6 June 1968 in Saint George) is a retired track and field athlete who competed for Dominica.
You can then follow this up with separate sentences giving further description and reason for notability:
- He competed at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in the men's 1500 metresand finished eighth in his heat, failing to advance.
Note that it's best to spell out event names and distances in full on the first use so they are easy for a reader to understand. You're also missing the key occupational category sets, in this instance Category:Dominica athletes and Category:Male middle-distance runners. This will make the article much easier to find in the category system. Hope this helps and thanks for your contributions! SFB 19:37, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice, all will be taken on board, I guess I am rushing too much to try and get much done in a short time I have on here, but all advice is greatly appreciated Iantheimp (talk) 20:08, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
Invite to the African Destubathon
Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:13, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
Welcome aboard! Can you try to get some more of the Olympics/football project members helping out too? Invites were sent out but not many from those projects have signed up yet, and there's a lot of work needing doing haha!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:06, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
Africa Destubathon
Hi, thanks for your work so far! Can you do me a favour though and always add every entry you do to the main list here as well as the entries page, regardless if yet approved or not as that's the master list of all articles being done. It's just very time consuming for me to be judging the articles, trying to contribute myself and chasing up what people have done and filling it out for people each time. So if you can take care of that this would be a great help, there's some part filled out ones underneath so you just need to add country, article name and then your username. Thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:33, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

Olympic performance
Thank you for quality for historic participants in the Olympic Games, such as Hubert Van Innis, Otto Wahle, Tzvetana Berkovska, Panagiotis Paraskevopoulos and Liliana Tagliaferri, to name a few recent ones of many, for updating the Games' articles, for the mantra "Cleaned up reference", - Ian, you are an awesome Wikipedian!

Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:59, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hi there, Iantheimp. I've just noticed you've become a member of Women in Red. I look forward to many new articles on sportswomen. If you need any help, let me know. If you have any suggestions, feel free to let us know on the WiR talk page.--Ipigott (talk) 10:35, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in study
Hello,
I am E. Whittaker, an intern at Wikimedia with the Scoring Team to create a labeled dataset, and potentially a tool, to help editors deal with incivility when they encounter it on talk pages. A full write-up of the study can be found here: m:Research:Civil_Behavior_Interviews. We are currently recruiting editors to be interviewed about their experiences with incivility on talk pages. Would you be interested in being interviewed? I am contacting you because of your involvement in Wikipedia’s Women in Red project. The interviews should take ~1 hour, and will be conducted over BlueJeans (which does allow interviews to be recorded). If, so, please email me at [email protected] in order to schedule an interview.
Thank you Ewitch51 (talk) 21:13, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Greetings!
After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.
The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Join us for some virtual cake and add comments or memories and please keep on editing to close the gap! |
