Kanonkas asked me to answer here. As far as I know we don't have a special template/bot for these kind of images at Commons. I believe some admins just restored images for a moment and transfered them to enwp with imagetransfer.py in the Pywikipedia package, but i'm not sure. multichill (talk) 14:22, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It was blacklisted because it was mass spammed on several wikis. That's grounds for blacklisting on meta wiki. Jorunn's comment gives you some information as to why it was blacklisted. Earlier I was using a (password protected) SSH tunnel through my Dreamhost account, so I could watch an episode a TV show streamed from its web site (for which I need a US IP address as it's geoprotected; I'm based in the UK). I went to edit an article not realising I was still going through the proxy, and I got this message:

Editing from 208.97.128.0/18 (your account, IP address, or IP address range) has been disabled by Kanonkas for the following reason(s): This IP address has been blocked because it is believed to be an open proxy or zombie computer.

The IP range is owned by New Dream Networks LLC, and it's where their own servers are hosted. I'd suggest that the range has been incorrectly attributed as a zombie / open proxy range - there's no open proxies as far as I can tell in this range, and there's certainly no zombified PCs in the range as it's only their servers! Could I suggest that this block is reevaluated?

Hi Christopher. That's not quite true. Webhosts are often used to proxify connections as they're more vulnerable targets to exploits (at times). Traffic shouldn't come from these ranges either. It is our experience that traffic originating from hosting service providers is invariably illegitimate, and usually the result of using an open proxy hosted at that service provider. Doing things this way is more in the line of childish behaviour than making a serious conttribution to Wikpedia. I know nothing of your claim about blocking. I asked for a link to the administrative decision to block him and you haven't provided one. The natural conclusion is that you don't have a link and you are otherwise unable to maintain your case, Wikipedia has too much unsupported material, this seems to be another example. I asked for them to help discover the history of this without scouring the whole of the Wikipedia administration (with which I am not familiar). I understand that you have some administrative function with Wikipedia and I asked for help. I now ask for more help; what is the basis for blocking "Global warming denialist claims"? I intend to restore some of the material about James Hansen deleted here [6] because it is very relevant for readers wanting to know about James Hansen, it shows that there is important disagreement about his Global Warming stance. There's a difference between being

indefinitely blocked. Scibaby is the latter, but since he's treated like a banned user (in that his edits are reverted), I felt that I had to make that distinction clear. Posting global warming denialist claims isn't itself a blockable offense, but the level to which Scibaby engages in such behavior is quite clearly disruptive. Most of the time, he creates sockpuppet accounts to add to articles that global warming is not caused by humans (in fact, he keeps adding info that global warming is caused by cow dung to every single global warming-related article). I'm not familiar enough with James Hansen to assess the relevance of the Capitol Power Plant protest controversy, but it seems the matter was deleted because of certain BLP and POV issues. An example of a POV issue in the article is the last sentence (global warming protests hampered by record snowfall), which is quite clearly an attempt at irony on Scibaby's part. The BLP issues arise when one considers Scibaby's motives. He's here to discredit James Hansen, and he's doing so by including the negative comments made by Chris Horner and John Theon. Your explanation seems to admit that you are walking all over Wikipedia policy. James Hansen, giving Direct evidence to the Iowa Utilities Board said "If we cannot stop the building of more coal-fired power plants, those coal trains will be death trains — no less gruesome than if they were boxcars headed to crematoria" (p4, para.4) is clearly courting controversy and Wikipedia readers should be informed that not everything he says is part of a consensus. If you have a deletion battle with Scibaby that is to be resolved within the Wikipedia rules but you are including in your exclusion policy valid material about a deliberate controversialist and in the process demeaning to Wikipedia. Can a user be blocked indefinitely based on speculation of

reported by another user with out real evidence?.

• What concerns me about this case is that User Sbs108 is being blocked indefinitely with out even any proof or strong evidence on him that he is indeed SSS108.
• The initial evidence provided by Croatulus were just edit war history between him and Sbs108. The evidence did not prove any connection between the two accounts.

Hi Kanonkas, and thanks for your interest in igloo. Before using the program, please read the following information carefully - failure to do so may result in your test access being revoked.

igloo is a JavaScript-powered, browser-based anti-vandalism tool, which means you do not have to download or install anything on your computer and it will work on multiple operating systems. However, it does mean that the performance relies on that of your browser and it may operate more slowly than downloaded programs. You must have either Mozilla Firefox 3+ or Google Chrome to use igloo, as it is currently incompatible with other browsers.

igloo relies on a system called iglooNet to assist you in finding and reverting vandalism. It is this system that transforms the program from a pretty version of recent changes to an actual anti-vandalism tool. Naturally, this is beyond the power of a client-side program, and igloo will regularly communicate with an external, non-Wikimedia server. Because of things like server logs, and the iglooNet abuse tracker, this may allow your IP address to be attached to your username - something which is otherwise impossible on Wikipedia. If you do not want this to happen, you MUST NOT USE IGLOO.

If you decide that you do want to test igloo, please keep in mind that it not wholly stable, and you may experience problems where it performs an invalid edit, or other unwanted action. If this happens, fix any mistakes you've made, apologise to anyone you've offended, and let me know. I don't take any responsibility for your use of the program - if you aren't willing to fix any errors, don't use it.

igloo is already quite powerful. The following is a simple guide to using the program:

• The igloo interface is similar to that of other software, including huggle. Recent changes appear on the left, and diffs appear on the right.
• igloo sorts diffs based on iglooNet data so that edits most likely to be vandalism are displayed first. You can press spacebar to view the top diff, or click on any diff to view it directly.
• When you find vandalism, press 'Q' or click the revert button to revert the change, and issue a warning to the user. igloo automatically issues the correct warning. It will ignore existing warnings that are more than 5 days old, and restart from the beginning.
• The iglooNet assertion system tags clean and dirty edits with colour coding - if it suspects an edit is vandalism, it will be flagged as red, and if it believes it to be clean, it will tag it green.
• At any time, you can re-review diffs you have already seen by pressing backspace or using the icons to move through the diff history.

Hello Kanonkas

I believe you are interested in celebrities so was wondering if you can help me. I noticed it says on the actor Herbert Marshall's bio that his first wife was Mollie Maitland (1915-1928) but according to his army service record it gives her name as Hilda L Bosley though the year of marriage is the same. As Mollie was an actress it could be that Hilda was her real name and Mollie her stage name. I was just wondering if you can advise on how I can enter this on the site as I am a little confused by the whole editing thing. Also I would like to mention that Herbert's full name Herbert Brough Falcon Marshall) was not given on his service record but just plain Herbert Marshall which I am sure will be of interest to fans of the star.

MSU Interview

Dear Kanonkas,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Blocked IP Range Due to Open Proxy

Kanonkas, my company is the owner of the 74.206.96.0/19 block of IPs, which you have been blocking. I had a few questions:

1.) How did you come to the conclusion that there was an Open Proxy within this range?

2.) What specific IP address did you find that was hosting the Open Proxy?

3.) Why did you block the entire range, instead of just the one IP?

We have this block subnetted and allocated to a bunch of customers. One customer is trying to update their company information on Wikipedia. They can't do it from this range of IPs which they are leasing a portion of. We ask that the block either be removed, the block be placed on the specific IP and not the entire range, or have some way for our customer to be able to edit from this block. I am not 100% sure, but is it possible for the customer to create a user account, and be able to circumvent this block?

Wikipedia needs a well structured Biography on a very unique man Please help.

Good Day, I am not sure if you are willing to do this, but you seem to fit the bill. I really do not know how to navigate this website well and sort of stumbled here. There is a man known in historical context named Richard Knight. There are no articles about this man, which surprises me. Although there is an article on his sidekick, which I am not sure why, there needs to be one on him. Here is a short synopsis of his amazing story, and hopefully it will inspire you to create one for Wikipedia.One of the most infamous pirates of all time, Captain Kidd was said to have amassed treasure worth £100,000 - a staggering £12 million now - before he was arrested for piracy and murder. He buried a cache somewhere on his travels and at his trial in 1781, tried to barter his knowledge of its location in return for his life. Kidd’s plan failed and he was sentenced to hang, his decaying body left to rot in public view for three years to deter other would-be pirates. But the mystery of his missing loot goes on to this day, captivating adventurers who are convinced that his untold riches are still out there for the taking - if only they could find them. The tale of one such buccaneer, Richard Knight, has been made into a television film, broadcast this week, and is almost as gripping as that of Captain Kidd. I first met Knight, when, fullbearded and weatherbeaten, he bounced into my office in Chelsea in 1985 looking for all the world like one of the pirates in whose footsteps he had sailed the Indian Ocean. A chancer, a charmer, an out-of-work actor, he wanted me to write the extraordinary story of how he had managed to solve the riddles surrounding Kidd’s fabled hoard. And with total conviction, he told me he had dug it up on an island off Communist Vietnam where it had lain hidden for three centuries. It was a ripping good yarn, just the recipe for a page-turner, substantiated at least in part by the jail sentence he had served in a squalid Vietnamese prison having been discovered on the island, which was a matter of record. I was hooked, and together we started working on his story. After a conventional upbringing on Britain’s south coast, Knight became a professional ice-skater before turning his hand to comedy and panto. When he went to Paris to work on a film with the famous French mime Marcel Marceau, he married a French girl. The marriage was soon over and Richard, ever the adventurer, was off on his travels again, this time ending up in California where he hoped to make it in Hollywood. His big break in acting never came, but he told me he had hit a bigger jackpot – he knew where Captain Kidd had stashed his fabulous treasure. Whiling his time away in the local library in between acting jobs, he became fascinated by books on Kidd and was soon convinced that he’d figured out where to find the great prize that hitherto had eluded everyone. The search for Kidd’s missing loot has usually centred on the East Coast of America and the Caribbean, the favourite haunt of pirates in their historic heyday. Where my curious pal Knight differed was that he believed that everyone had been looking in the wrong place. In one book he discovered references to some old charts, hidden in pirate chests collected by a Sussex neighbour, Hubert Palmer. Knight became convinced they had been drawn up by Kidd himself and they proved that, far from being located off the East Coast of America, Kidd’s treasure island was on the other side of the world in the South China Seas. When he learned that Kidd had spent as much time in the Far East as he did in the West Indies, and that the British had minted a fortune in coins there, he was sure he was right. Taking into account changes in longitude over the centuries, he finally zeroed in to the island of Hon Tre Lon off Vietnam, where no Westerner had ever looked before. And when he discovered that the island’s name means Grand Pirate Island in Vietnamese, it really put a spring in his step.These days you can clearly see the island on Google Earth, but, more than 20 years ago, Knight was planning to plunge into unknown Communist territory based on a hunch. Undeterred, he set off in pursuit of his fortune, trying to recruit like-minded bounty hunters in Australia and Hong Kong. His method was to go to the local bar and pick up likely backers over a couple of beers. He took courses in navigation and then fired off letters to the Vietnamese government. First he posed as a mining prospector who wanted to split the share of any minerals found with them.

They weren’t interested. Then he applied for a tourist visa but was told he could only visit accepted venues in Vietnam. Hon Tre Lon was definitely off limits. Knight seems to have had no trouble finding backers, but no one actually wanted to brave the hazards and come with him. By 1981 he decided to chance it on his own, reasoning that’s what Kidd would have done. The canny Kidd would not have shared an invaluable secret with anyone. Even if he had helpers to bury the treasure, he would simply have killed them once they had outlived their usefulness. His maps even show a skeleton which Knight assumed was one of the hapless helpers. Knight had the resolve, now all he needed was a boat. He headed for Bangkok and then to Trengannu on the Malaysian coast about 400 miles from his quarry. There after much wrangling he found a fishing boat with a number rather than a name, TFA 1396 on hire for £500. After several practice runs along the coast, he set off navigating by the stars. At this point, not even Kidd’s ghost could help him. He was crossing the Gulf of Thailand, right in the middle of busy modern shipping routes with no lights on his boat. He might have been safe from detection, but he could easily have been run down by a supertanker. Knight crossed safely and, anchoring off a neighbouring island, proceeded to Hon Tre Lon in a small dinghy, taking with him a metal detector, crowbar, spade, trowels, binoculars, sacks and some basic provisions including corned beef, bottled water and dollar bills to bribe any natives. He beached the dinghy, then, at first light, made his way to the spot where he was sure he would find the treasure. As he did so, he noticed there were several huts on the island - it was inhabited and this spelled danger. He pressed on anyway and, using Kidd’s map and the metal detector, found three chests exactly where he expected they would be - between two wrecks, 20 feet East of the skeleton and opposite the turtle beach. To hear him tell, his enterprise was rewarded dramatically. The chests were full of gold and silver coins, both Oriental and European, and invaluable jade and porcelain figurines. Knight worked fast for fear of detection, stuffing as much as he could in sacks and throwing away most of the tools he had brought with him to lighten the load. With the sun about to set, he decided to look in a fourth location marked on the map. But, despite the fact that the metal detector indicated another find, he decided to putter back to TFA 1396 and on to Thailand while his luck held out and come back later. Knight told me he reckoned his find was worth at least £40 million, but now he had it, he was not at all sure what to do with it. He said he had already written to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington who said they would be delighted to make a bid for whatever he found, but only if it had been taken out of the country legally. Clearly that was not the case, so he had to think of another plan. This became even more urgent when TFA 1396 was boarded by some of the modern Thai pirates who abound in the area. They were drunk and somehow didn’t find the treasure hidden in the hold, but took his watch and the film he had shot which he had hidden in a cash box. Things were getting so dangerous that he decided to rebury the booty on the west coast of Thailand, and come back for it with his Australian backer who was expecting a share. He was so worried about other people finding it that he didn’t even make a map, maintaining there were sufficient recognisable landmarks for him to be able to locate it when he returned. Up to this point in the tale, there was nothing to confirm whether he was telling the truth or not, but Knight always had a rational excuse for his bizarre behaviour, and his tales were no more fanciful than those of others over the ages who have risked their lives in the pursuit of treasure. Treasure hunter George Edmunds, a contributor to the television programme on Knight, certainly bought his story too. Edmunds, who knew the elusive Knight briefly, once received a phone call from the latter in the middle of China asking him for money to pay his hotel bill. ‘I sent him £100 to get him out of a hole and he promised he would give me a share of the treasure,’ says Edmunds, ‘But I never heard from him again.’ There was, however, definite proof of his second voyage to Vietnam. In 1983, while waiting for his Australian backer to come over to Thailand to help him dig up the treasure he had reburied, he went back to Hon Tre Lon to find the fourth cache.

Knight embarked on this second adventure with a young American backpacker, Fred Graham, who was in the Orient looking for stories to kickstart his career as a photo-journalist. But the pair of them were arrested by Communist guards before they had time to dig anything up The guards did not believe their story about treasure, insisted they were spies and flung them into prison.At this point the Foreign Office, alerted by local press reports in Hanoi, tried to obtain Knight’s release, but his family were unable to pay the $10,000 fine set by the Vietnamese authorities. Eventually Fred’s parents in San Francisco came up with the ransom for him, leaving Knight abandoned in his rat-infested jail. Then, out of the blue, a British born Californian taxi driver, spurred on no doubt by the prospect of spoils, agreed to pay the money to get Knight home too - 14 months after his ordeal had begun. He came straight back to England and threw himself into the book. He was still clearly obsessed with the treasure on the island and getting it before the Vietnamese did, and going back to Thailand with his Australian backer to dig up his fabulous find. Then, as soon as the book was published, he disappeared. I never saw or heard from him again and it was only recently I discovered what had become of him. Scoundrel or fantasist, we shall never know unless someone else braves the dangers of Hon Tre Lon or happens on the secret location in Thailand, for Richard is not around to explain himself. It is only whilst contributing to the programme that I discovered he died about ten years ago in Carlisle, a very long way from the South China Seas. His Australian backer had disappeared and he was still looking for a new one. As for George Edmunds, he says he used to believe the story, but he now thinks Knight was on the wrong track completely. He believes Knight deciphered the charts accurately, but they were not authentic. Edmunds wouldn’t be a treasurehunter himself if he didn’t add that, against all the odds, he has now pinpointed the real location and is preparing his own expedition to find it. He says Treasure Island is not in the South China Seas at all. It is in a totally new spot where no one has ever thought to look before. And like Knight, he is convinced he is right.

An editor reduced a BLP down to a stub after an AfD resulted in "no consensus," deleting what he or she considered "coatrack" and trivial details, and it is clear from the resulting discussion on the talk page that different editors have very different ideas of what kind of details should or should not be included in a BLP. Would you be willing to take a look at the discussion (which isn't as yet overly long) and give your opinion on what sort of details WikiProject Biography prefers included and/or excluded from BLPs? Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Kanonkas. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

"extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion

with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016,

a request for comment

established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

• Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
• A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Kanonkas.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. Guideline and policy news

• A discussion to workshop proposals to amend the administrator inactivity policy at Wikipedia talk:Administrators has been in process since late December 2016.
• Wikipedia:Pending changes/Request for Comment 2016 closed with no consensus for implementing Pending changes level 2 with new criteria for use.
• Following an RfC, an activity requirement is now in place for bots and bot operators.

Technical news

• When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
• Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
• The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

Arbitration

• The Arbitration Committee released a response to the Wikimedia Foundation's statement on paid editing and outing.

Obituaries

• JohnCD (John Cameron Deas) passed away on 30 December 2016. John began editing Wikipedia seriously during 2007 and became an administrator in November 2009.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are

remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

Adrian Perkins

Hi Kanonkas,

I'm addressing my question to you as a member of the politics and government work group, and of the many members listed, I liked your self-description. I first heard of Adrian Perkins on 23 July, in an announcement of endorsement by DSCC.org, and thought to look up his page here for more information. My impression was that the article was both poorly written, and generally biased against him. At 00:28 24 (UTC), July 24, I made the first of four consecutive edits to his page, two of which I wasn't sure would be appropriate: the fact of his endorsement, and separately, the very brief reason given by DSCC.org. Both of these were removed at 16:55, 28 July, by an anon user, with the edit summary "Told the truth" (whatever that means). I still don't know if either of my additions were inappropriate, or if the deleting editor simply didn't like them. If they are not inappropriate, I think they would be helpful to readers.

Separately, I now find a new edit of 01:06, 30 July, by a different anon user, removing the words "was alleged to", changing an allegation to a purported fact. It's my impression from the sources that allegation better describes the situation. Also, I'm not familiar with KEEL radio station, but I get the impression that its programming may generally have a political bias. Of course that would also describe my own edits, which at least state the bias of the source.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

why my entry looks different than what I copied it from

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathleen_Freeman

I added Naked Gun 33 1/3 to Kathleen Freeman but it adds a "+" between the 33 and 1/3. That is not how it looks on the page I copied it from (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_Nielsen_filmography).

How can I remove the "+" so it looks like the page I copied the code from? I literally copied and pasted and it adds the "+".
