Question

Hi Chris,

I am a little confused about what we can use as references. Can we only use free papers? Or can we use ones we can access through JHU? Are we allowed to use text books?

You can use anything you like, as long as they qualify as "reliable sources" (textbooks are great). The issue of licensing (free vs. not free) only applies when you want to include content into articles -- like figures or videos. But with references, you are just gathering the information and rewriting and summarizing in your own words (being careful not to plagiarize, of course), so the source does not have to have any special license. Hi, Aluquette, Sorry it has taken me a couple of days to get back to you! Reviews are better than primary research, yes. That doesn't mean you *can't* use a primary research paper, but you should use your discretion. Image Question

Hi Klortho, I'm a little confused about what kind of images we can use. I know they can't be copyrighted, but if I find a website that has an image, or an image in a google search, that does not have the copyright symbol on it, can I assume it's not copyrighted? No, you can't assume that. Things are copyright by default; it doesn't matter if they don't have a copyright symbol on them. In this case, you could contact the creator of those figures, which looks like it is probably this guy: http://biosiva.50webs.org/, and ask if he'd be willing to release them under a liberal license and put them on Wikimedia Commons. Reference Question

Hi Chris, I changed my sandbox to have another entry for my unit 5 PubMed Assignment (see PubMed Assignment 2). Can you tell me if this is now correct for using the Diberri filling tool for the first reference? Also, how do I add to the same reference (the superscrit letters) when using the same reference? Yes, that looks great. To add another reference to the same source, just use an "empty ref" tag with the name, like this: <ref name="pmid20822440"/>. Notice that the tag uses "/>" at the end, instead of ">". Give it a try and let me know if you have a problem. Klortho (talk) 12:21, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

A Patent Reference

For citing patents, try this template: {{Cite patent}}. For citing the same book many times, with each citation using different page numbers, the citing sources page suggests that you use footnotes with short citations (see the examples there), but I don't remember seeing those very often in these articles. Hey Doug! I agree, {{
Harvnb}}, which looks like this in the edit window: <ref>{{Harvnb|Lastname|Year|p=##}}</ref>. It's pretty intuitive. The other option is {{sfn}}, which is what I use in a lot of articles I work on. When you're editing, you don't need the <ref> tags, all you do is type {sfn|Lastname|Year|p=##}} where you want the footnote to appear. Check out Aries (constellation)
to see how it works in an article, and if you do take that route, feel free to ask me for help implementing it.
Your other option is basically doing what you're doing, but adding page numbers to the {{cite book}} template and then renaming each individual reference. So you'll have a bunch of <ref name=Watson214/> and <ref name=Watson250/> throughout the article. Personally, when I have more than 2-3 pages cited from the same book, I go for list defined references. I hope this helps; please let me know if you want more help with this. Unit 7 assignment questio

Hi, so I'm having another referance issue - John and I are editing the

82C since I had already included possible referances for this page on there. I just got graded and noticed I got 0% for the referances portion, then went to check on the group page, and my foot note links to the referances I had on the group page do not work. They look like links, I can click on them, but none of them actually direct me anywhere. Do you have any idea what happened??PJCollettJHU (talk

Hi, are you talking about your week 5 grade? If so, that was based on this version of your sandbox. From what I could tell, it didn't look like you used Diberri's tool, and you didn't "reference at least one of the articles more than one time". For the references, you were not graded on what was in your group page, but I just had a look, and it seems that the problem is that there is no {{reflist}} template anywhere on the page. Nope, I am definitely referring to the last Unit - Unit 7. Part of the assignment was to "Move the list of references found in Unit 5 from your group page to the working sandbox page." I took a shortcut - wiki style - and just put a link in to my group page since I had listed references there when I made my initial assessment of the adenosine diphosphate page. When I recieved 0 points for doing so, I was frustrated, but was going to then actually copy and paste the references and move them from one page to the other. When I went to do so, I noticed that my footnote numbers would not link me to the corresponding references. If you go to our group page and scroll all the way down to where I assesed the ADP page, you'll see what I mean. This is what I am confused about - and annoyed - since now I'm going to have to refind those references. Let me know if this clarifies my question and confusion. Hi, if you use <ref>...</ref> on your page, then you must use a {{
group page, so you can see what I mean. Without that, then the footnotes numbers appear in the body of the text, but they are "dangling", there is no place that the text of the footnotes is actually rendered. So, you shouldn't have to refind the references -- they were there, but just not visible. Does it make sense, or am I still not understanding the problem? Klortho (talk

It might help if you think of <ref> as being misnamed -- it really should be <footnote>. Everything between the <ref>...</ref> tags is turned into a footnote. And the Wikimedia software is not very sophisticated: it doesn't know where you want to put the footnotes unless you tell it, and that's what the {{reflist}} does. We found few figures we want to use in the article. They were public domain images with their own captions. Could we remove captions from figure before we use figure in the wiki article? I agree it looks like that figure is in the public domain, since it's authored by NCBI. Anything that's in the public domain -- you can do whatever you want with it. Removing the caption is fine. Klortho (talk) 00:01, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Adding references articles from a commercial archive

I was a peer-reviewer for frameshift mutation article. While I was checking references, I found that citations for a few (exactly 6) of their references are pointing the commercial archive server. To read that article, it apparently I need to join that website. I cannot say if that website is a free to join to view that article or paid-membership required to read any of them. What is policy from Wiki in this case? Do they need to look for other article what is available on a public domain? That's not entirely correct, since fair use images are allowed on the English Wikipedia (in contrast to many others). They are restricted to topics very closely related to what the image depicts, so you cannot just copy them everywhere you want, even on the same wiki. Thanks for the clarification, Daniel! Lauren -- so, to be sure, you should check the image to see if it is labeled as "fair use". A lot of images on Wikipedia are ultimately from Wikimedia Commons (for example, this one, that you guys put under "Immune System") and in that case, you can use it anywhere on Wikipedia. Question about watchlist

Hi Chris,

I've noticed that my email notifications for the pages on my watchlist are very flaky. I don't always get notifications for some pages, which has made me miss some communications from my teammates and prevented me from responding in a timely manner. For example, I do get notifications about my article, Fluorescent Tagging, and the talk pages. But I have only once gotten any notification from my group's talk page, 81D, a few months ago, even though it has been edited since. I have checked, and this is indeed on my watchlist. I'm not Chris but I'll butt in and answer anyways...the watchlist notifications can be super flaky sometimes and the system might have just eaten the email instead of sending it. You've got all the settings right, so there's not much you can do besides occasionally checking Special:Watchlist to make sure you didn't miss anything. Sorry about that! Thanks, Keilana, for butting in! I'd also add that sometimes what can cause confusion, at first, is the feature that you only get one notification until you go visit the page again. In the past, I've had it happen that I forgot to visit the page, and then stopped getting notifications without realizing it.
