How do I create custom signatures?

Over at "My preferences", you tick the box "Treat the above as wiki markup" and key markup into the "Signature" text box. There is a gallery of signatures at User:Athaenara/Gallery which you might find helpful, but some of these do not meet the current rules at Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing your signature. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:08, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
