Hello PiRSquared17. GOCE July 2010 backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update.

Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue.

Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board.

The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated.

GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the
Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales
—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Stats
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.

GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the
Guild of Copy Editors

The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting.

This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words".

re:Creating pages about Chittagong on small wikis

Hi! Sorry about the vandalism! I have already stopped it! Yes, I created those with some translation tools. I wanted to have the article translated in those wikis! I'm not doing this anymore! You can reply to this message here at your talkpage! Thanks --Zayeem (talk) 09:58, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Note: please check your translations more carefully! For example, your Yoruba translation uses the phrase "ilu titobijulo". I checked with a Yoruba friend of mine (i.e., a dictionary :P) and got this translation:
  • "ilu" means "city" and is correct
  • "titobi-" = "greatness"
  • "-julo" means "most or like 'est' in 'greatest' (
    superlative
    )"
So it's false, because Chittagong is the second largest city, not the largest one. I'm going to have to check all these translations. πr2 (tc) 16:26, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, it means "Second largest" (because of "keji"). You're getting good at this. :P May I ask how you're getting these translations? I'm the one who needs to "check translations more carefully", sorry. I'll write here only if I'm 100% of a problem. πr2 (tc) 16:28, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was actually taking the hint from the similar articles on a particular wiki and put it on creating the article on that wiki. I'm not using translation tools anymore! Is it okay? Thanks! --Zayeem (talk) 12:36, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Akan is aka Twi. I think the early creators of the akan wikipedia and two wikipedia thought there was a difference in the two terms.

But in my own opinion, maintaining the akan wikipedia is instead good. If possible, the two wikipedia should be taken away.

I have been helping a lot but its lead by three South Africans and sponsored by the Swiss chapter. There was a an editathon at Gandhi's house yesterday and that was where the six languages were started. The project is targetted at Soweto mostly, QRpedia and African languages. I was a $1000 flight away so I could only join then via an editor. If you are interested in the project then search for Joburgpedia and you should find the work so far. If you sign up or edit a few Joburgpedia articlers then that would make us all smile:-) Thanks for the interest. Victuallers (talk) 21:52, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Flow Newsletter

Hey PiRSquared17. I'm dropping you a note to let you know (or remind you) about Flow, the structured discussion system for Wikipedia that we're building. You may have heard about some of the longer-term vision for Flow in the past, but in the last two months we've been moving quickly to narrow down the short-term scope of the project, and we're keen to get feedback.

First: we've written up an explanation of the "minimum viable product" – the set of features that will be in the first, on-wiki deployment. Because discussions on Wikipedia are complex and varied, we're approaching Flow development as an incremental process of uncovering user needs for different types of discussion. The first release will be limited to a few WikiProject talkpages only, with the goal of testing out our first stab at peer-to-peer discussion functionality and improving it based on feedback from the WikiProject members who use it. If you've got any thoughts on the MVP, or on the philosophy we're trying to follow with this software, let us know on the Flow talkpage. If you know of a WikiProject that might be interested in testing this out, let Maryana know on her talkpage :)

Second: we're having a set of discussions around some experimental features we'll be trying in the first release. These include indenting and nesting of comments and comment editing. If you've got any practical thoughts on these, we'd appreciate hearing them. For background and feedback on the design, there are the ongoing set of design iteration notes, a Design FAQ, and a page for design feedback.

The software prototype is still in early development, and changing daily in small ways, with major goals updating every 2 weeks. If you've got comments about other bits of the software, we'll be holding an IRC office hours session in #wikimedia-office at 18:00 UTC on 17 November to talk about Flow as a whole, and fielding questions on the talkpage before and after then.

Third: this is a pre-newsletter announcement of a new WP:Flow/Newsletter signup page! If you'd like further updates, details, and requests for input, please add your name there.

Thanks, Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 20:02, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Due to multiple-human-error (the best kind of error!) the Office Hours meeting was announced with the wrong month. The logs for today's (quiet) meeting, can be seen at m:IRC office hours#Office hour logs.
The updated time and date of our next IRC office hours meeting is: 18:00 UTC on 24 October. Thanks, and sorry about the mixup. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 21:46, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just missed it? Well, I'll at least read the logs. :-( πr2 (tc) 22:29, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

define irony

I was visiting your talkpage on meta, to ask for some routine help with HardSecurity screwing up my work, but started getting 404 errors from the meta.wikimedia.org server farm. Like, a lot of errors. So, rather than post a message about my minor problems with some badly-thought-out bot, instead I switched gears, and wrote you a note about the MINOR EMERGENCY that at least some of wikimedia was effectively down.

in which a hilarious discourse is provided, on the vagaries of bots, and the blackness of existence for editors, and a great many other fascinating and interesting things

Subject/headline:

MINOR EMERGENCY, have seen five <s>three</s> 404 errors when clicking show-preview-button, or add-topic-tab, on meta.wikimedia.org (but none over on en.wiki earlier today) during the past fifteen minutes

Clicking back button, and trying again, works. Maybe one of the webservers in the farm is busted, and when I randomly get directed to that one, I get the errors? ~~~~

Ah. The same bot, that is elsewhere preventing me from working with a group founded to improve the friendly-ness of wikimedia, is also now preventing me from reporting a serious server outage/misconfiguration. At times like these, my heart swells with joy, that I can consider myself a member of the tribe of folks who love wikipedia, and will do anything to defend her, including metaphorically tear each other limb from limb, over the correct grammatical handling of the word 'been', and whether local television coverage in three states is as good of a reliable source as 'national' coverage via the internet in two fifth-tier news-zines. Well, I have plenty of gumption, so I tried quite a few edits, trying to trick the bot into letting me do what would help wikimedia.

(several attempts later)

MINOR EMERGENCY, have seen five <s>three</s> 404 errors when clicking show-preview-button, or add-topic-tab, on meta dot wikimedia dot org (but none over on enWiki earlier today) during the past fifteen minutes

Clicking back button, and trying again, works. Maybe one of the webservers in the farm is busted, and when I randomly get directed to that one, I get the errors? preceding '''signed''' message was blocked by the 'comment bot edits from IPs' rule, which is utterly ironic since I was *just* coming to this talkpage to complain about that damn thing which is hindering my constructive work *elsewhere* on wikimedia ... 74 dot 192 dot 84 dot 101 , see my metawiki talkpage for my complaints about abusefilter rule fifty , see my en dot wikipedia dot org user colon talkpage if you want me to be able to respond. Let us try clicking submit once again, shall we?

But of course, bots being bots, there was no progress at all. I also got several more 404 errors, during my editing cycles; the problem appeared to grow worse over time.

So, I suppose I could have just registered a temp-account over at meta, and then trashed it later. Surely you jest? That would just lead to me getting banned, as a sockpuppet. Sigh.

I still had *some* gumption left, so I decided to visit the same admin over on the main wikipedia website. They are already in favor of SoftSecurity, they've already contacted me about some edit (one not blocked by a bot oddly enough) over on meta, they have the permbits necessary to get the 404 trouble fixed, plus are also a botmaster in an area related to the AbuseFilter rule that is screwing up my life now. Perfect, right?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:PiRSquared17 "Please leave urgent messages on Meta for a faster response."

I tried. I did. I really tried. And was prevented.

So here I am, composing a nice note, about a server problem that will no doubt have long been resolved by now. Or maybe not... I guess it depends on whether the problem in question is somehow only triggered for not-logged-in editors, in which case, maybe those 404 errors have been happening for months. Nahh... surely the webserver-sysadmins have some kind of automated error reporting, which pulls 4xx and 5xx info from the raw apache and nginx logfiles, without penalizing anons simply for being anons. Well, I hope they do, anyhoo.

Anyways, my gumption for dealing with 404 problems on the meta server-farm is exhausted for today. If you cannot reproduce the trouble, give me a ping -- over on my en.wikipedia.org talkpage where I'll be able to actually you know so to speak respond -- and I'll see if I can capture you some HTTP headers, or the IP of the offending node in the server-farm.

As for my other difficulty, where the bot is blocking me from Righting Great Wrongs, that I would still appreciate assistance with. Prior to the fiasco documented above, I wrote up a somewhat-harsh, but methinks totally justified (especially in view of the saga above which had yet to occur) list of complaints about rule#50 and the bot which mindlessly enforces it, despite having no active owner anymore.

Please see over here -- https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:74.192.84.101#request_change_from_disallow_to_warn_for_the_.27comment_bot_edits_from_IPs.27_rule_.2350_in_the_AbuseFilter

I will probably link from that page, to this one... but I will exercise incredible restraint, and avoid updating the now-to-my-eyes vastly inadequate suggestions therein, to correspond to my new understanding of the level of evil destructive pox on humanity enemy of all that is good and right in the universe 'comment bot edits from IPs' malware... perhaps you can understand this decision, I fear that the *new* rant I might write, were I to start editing the commentary over there about the poor design decision that is abusefilter rule number fifty, would quickly leave objectivity behind. I henceforth consider rule number fifty my personal enemy. Please alert it to the fact that its days are numbered, if I have anything to say about it.  :-)   Oh yeah, nevermind, as if it will care... it is just a bot, after all. Since you have the necessary admin-permbits, PiRSquared17, perhaps I can hire you to perform an assassination of a particular bot, which has crossed me one times to many? I promise, this is not a vendetta, merely me trying to think of the good of the community, all the editors it will someday bite, the future of wiki..... rrrrrr do i hate that little bot of wikipedia, what a wonderful world it would be if SoftSecurity were the norm, why cannot we all just get along? I pay in gold. SRSLY.

Sigh.

Thanks for your time. Sorry about the WP:WALLOFTEXT. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 18:46, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. moments before making this edit to my meta.wikimedia talkpage :

I had clicked save (the first time... above is the second time to click save), and was presented with this disconcerting-to-say-the-least message, instead of my expected page of talkpage conversations about bugs in the wikipedia codebase:

Clicked back, clicked save again, and upon reload looked 'fine' again. No mention in the history of the page being deleted... so, not an editor or an admin trying to blank me, just a stupid misconfigured server somewhere.

Just noticed this message here. Already replied on Meta. Will be gone for 2+ hours. πr2 (tc) 22:36, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I also got a reply from MF-Warburg, but I cannot reply on my meta-talkpage about 50% of the time any more. Anyways, although the 404 was reasonably urgent, my own bot-problems are not so urgent... because misbehaving bots like this only screw up the lives of editors by destroying WP:RETENTION, rather than screw up the lives of readers like the 404 errors. I am pretty determined to get the bots fixed, however. Thanks for reading my wall of text; I'll collapse it now. If I fail to reply to you on the meta-talkpage, please check over here. Or we can move the discussion to my enWiki talkpage, if you prefer. Thanks 74.192.84.101 (talk) 23:11, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I replied on Meta. Summary: I disabled two filters that were getting lots of false positives, and replied about the others. I'm willing to consider disabling some of the other filters you mentioned, as they are frankly not very useful. πr2 (tc) 02:00, 23 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Appreciate it, as I mentioned over on the other page. But my real problem is not so much with any specific filter-ruleset. My real problem is with WP:NICE and with WP:RETENTION. I've become reasonably convinced that a big reason wikipedia has been stuck at 30k active editors (10% of them admins) for many years now is because of WP:BITE. There is a vicious cycle in play: admins don't have time to be nice, because they rush from fire to fire. (This applies to acting-admins as well... wikipedians who volunteer on huggle/stiki/npp/afd/etc duty who do not yet officially have the admin-bit.) Botmasters don't have time to be nice; their bots are the only thing keeping the overburdened admins sane, after all, and preventing wikipedia from descending into chaos.
But the result of this rush-rush-no-time-for-pillar-four culture among admins, and the similar who-cares-about-false-positives-it-is-only-a-few-n00bs-out-of-thousands-of-vandals culture among botmasters, is the cause of why admins and botmasters have no time. Incremental improvements in how WP:NICE the bots are, will help improve WP:RETENTION. Anyways, at the moment my short-term goal is to get the abuse-filter-boilerplate-errmsg changed from YOU ARE HARMFUL into something actually friendly and helpful (i.e. links to a human talkpage or human IRC chatpage or both). But my long-term goal is to start retaining 500 new editors per month, and go from 30k active admins 100k, then to 300k, then to 1m, then to 3m. Most of them will not be RfA-qualified, but if we WP:AGF, all 3m of them will be qualified to be WP:NICE to each other, and to future beginners.
Plus, the shortage of botmasters and vandal-fighters and anti-spam-warriors will be solved, as a bonus -- there will be plenty of volunteeer militia to defend wikipedia then.
Anyhoo, I will visit the various talkpages, and see if I can answer your questions. Now that I can post on my own meta-talkpage once again, and yours as well, would you rather have conversation about 404 and rule#57 and rule#50 and such over at one of those? You can ping my enWiki talkpage if I don't respond promptly, of course. But I suggest we pick a place to centralize discussions, so the RFH reviewers (or anybody else I can get interested in bot-problems) don't have to read temporally-disconnected chunks of text in four different places. Thanks, and thanks for improving wikipedia. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 14:04, 23 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Coming straight to your talk this time as it doesn't seem like VPT needs to be the venue any more.

Could you please do another transclusion count? This time for redirects to Template:WikiProject* that do begin with "Template:WikiProject" or "Template:WP" (case insensitive). Thank you! — Scott talk 14:50, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If that doesn't work, remove the ".interlanguage-link" part. πr2 (tc) 01:30, 12 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hakka Transliteration tool available?

Hi PiRSquared17,

I would like to know if a Chinese character --> Romanized Hakka (Pha̍k-fa-sṳ) transliteration tool has been set up online? For example, this Kyrgyz transliteration tool.

If it currently does not exist, would you be able to help set it up online?

In this way, any strengths and weaknesses of the transliteration tool can be identified, thoroughly tested and new chinese characters/words/vocabulary can be added in to the system database to further perfect it. --Hak-ngìn (talk) 03:37, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Hak-ngìn: here, or just test it on this wiki (you need to register an account there to edit; just enter "Nupedia" for the "Wikipedia's predecessor" CAPTCHA). What should the default variant be? Simplified, Traditional, or Romanized? πr2 (tc) 13:35, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the links! I am very impressed.
In answer to your question, Hakka Wikipedia currently allows both scripts (Traditional and Romanized) to be used although the simplified script can also be used if they choose to. I do know of other Hakka users in Taiwan and other countries which prefer writing in Romanized Hakka. However many Hakka in the Mainland China and Southeast Asia prefer writing articles in Traditional Chinese characters (with Hakka grammar of course). Therefore this conversion tool would be greatly useful in the long term on Hakka Wikipedia. --Hak-ngìn (talk) 15:30, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Could we please move this discussion to MediaWiki.org? I don't edit the English Wikipedia much and it's not relevant here. πr2 (tc) 17:54, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I will discuss at MediaWiki.org in the future. --Hak-ngìn (talk) 19:42, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please create documentation pages for your scripts

Hello, could you please create documentation pages for your scripts? That would be really helpful. They don't have to be long - they just need to state what the script is doing (it doesn't matter if that's already in a comment in the script or not).

--Fixuture (talk) 19:14, 14 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Fixuture: I've been inactive for a while. Honestly I don't even remember writing any user scripts on enwiki. I just checked and didn't see anything in Special:PrefixIndex/user:PiRSquared17/ that looked original. Do you have any specific scripts in mind? πr2 (tc) 06:40, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@PiRSquared17: Well, what about User:PiRSquared17/nosecure.js & User:PiRSquared17/Rollback.js for instance? --Fixuture (talk) 18:19, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Fixuture: The former is a script that I created years ago for this request. Only a couple of accounts use it, one of whom is an ArbCom-banned and one of which is an alt. Besides, as far as I know, Wikimedia projects don't even support insecure connections anymore since 2015 so the script is useless anyway. I don't remember why I created the latter one, but I doubt anyone even uses it. πr2 (tc) 22:57, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@PiRSquared17: Well, alright then...but please note that nobody using a script is no reason to not create a documentary page for it. If the script can potentially be useful it just means that those for whom it could it be useful haven't heard of it yet - something which documentary pages could help with. --Fixuture (talk) 23:06, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
