Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update. Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board. The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated. Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales —signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody! Stats If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars. I recently patrolled a new article called Mataji Krishna Priya, which I tagged for issues with its sources and neutrality. In trying to look up some background about the article, I came across Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Sri Sadguru Mataji Krishnapriya, which is an identical article, which you declined on its creation. Note: please check your translations more carefully! For example, your Yoruba translation uses the phrase "ilu titobijulo". I checked with a Yoruba friend of mine (i.e., a dictionary :P) and got this translation:

• "ilu" means "city" and is correct
• "titobi-" = "greatness"
• "-julo" means "most or like 'est' in 'greatest' (
  superlative
  )"

Akan is aka Twi. I think the early creators of the akan wikipedia and two wikipedia thought there was a difference in the two terms.

But in my own opinion, maintaining the akan wikipedia is instead good. If possible, the two wikipedia should be taken away.

Hi PiRSquared (nice name), well this isnt my project. Satyagraha House is part of a Wikimedia ZA project called Joburgpedia. I have been helping a lot but its lead by three South Africans and sponsored by the Swiss chapter. There was a an editathon at Gandhi's house yesterday and that was where the six languages were started. The project is targetted at Soweto mostly, QRpedia and African languages. I was a $1000 flight away so I could only join then via an editor. If you are interested in the project then search for Joburgpedia and you should find the work so far. Hey PiRSquared17. I'm dropping you a note to let you know (or remind you) about Flow, the structured discussion system for Wikipedia that we're building. You may have heard about some of the longer-term vision for Flow in the past, but in the last two months we've been moving quickly to narrow down the short-term scope of the project, and we're keen to get feedback.

First: we've written up an explanation of the "minimum viable product" – the set of features that will be in the first, on-wiki deployment. Because discussions on Wikipedia are complex and varied, we're approaching Flow development as an incremental process of uncovering user needs for different types of discussion. The first release will be limited to a few WikiProject talkpages only, with the goal of testing out our first stab at peer-to-peer discussion functionality and improving it based on feedback from the WikiProject members who use it. If you've got any thoughts on the MVP, or on the philosophy we're trying to follow with this software, let us know on the Flow talkpage. If you know of a WikiProject that might be interested in testing this out, let Maryana know on her talkpage :)

Second: we're having a set of discussions around some experimental features we'll be trying in the first release. These include indenting and nesting of comments and comment editing. If you've got any practical thoughts on these, we'd appreciate hearing them. For background and feedback on the design, there are the ongoing set of design iteration notes, a Design FAQ, and a page for design feedback.

The software prototype is still in early development, and changing daily in small ways, with major goals updating every 2 weeks. If you've got comments about other bits of the software, we'll be holding an IRC office hours session in #wikimedia-office at 18:00 UTC on 17 November to talk about Flow as a whole, and fielding questions on the talkpage before and after then.

Like, a lot of errors. So, rather than post a message about my minor problems with some badly-thought-out bot, instead I switched gears, and wrote you a note about the MINOR EMERGENCY that at least some of wikimedia was effectively down.

I also got a reply from MF-Warburg, but I cannot reply on my meta-talkpage about 50% of the time any more. Anyways, although the 404 was reasonably urgent, my own bot-problems are not so urgent... because misbehaving bots like this only screw up the lives of editors by destroying WP:RETENTION, rather than screw up the lives of readers like the 404 errors. Appreciate it, as I mentioned over on the other page. But my real problem is not so much with any specific filter-ruleset. My real problem is with WP:NICE and with WP:RETENTION. I've become reasonably convinced that a big reason wikipedia has been stuck at 30k active editors (10% of them admins) for many years now is because of WP:BITE. There is a vicious cycle in play: admins don't have time to be nice, because they rush from fire to fire. (This applies to acting-admins as well... wikipedians who volunteer on huggle/stiki/npp/afd/etc duty who do not yet officially have the admin-bit.) Botmasters don't have time to be nice; their bots are the only thing keeping the overburdened admins sane, after all, and preventing wikipedia from descending into chaos.

   But the result of this rush-rush-no-time-for-pillar-four culture among admins, and the similar who-cares-about-false-positives-it-is-only-a-few-n00bs-out-of-thousands-of-vandals culture among botmasters, is the cause of why admins and botmasters have no time. Incremental improvements in how WP:NICE the bots are, will help improve WP:RETENTION. Anyways, at the moment my short-term goal is to get the abuse-filter-boilerplate-errmsg changed from YOU ARE HARMFUL into something actually friendly and helpful (i.e. links to a human talkpage or human IRC chatpage or both). But my long-term goal is to start retaining 500 new editors per month, and go from 30k active admins 100k, then to 300k, then to 1m, then to 3m. Most of them will not be RfA-qualified, but if we WP:AGF, all 3m of them will be qualified to be WP:NICE to each other, and to future beginners.

   Plus, the shortage of botmasters and vandal-fighters and anti-spam-warriors will be solved, as a bonus -- there will be plenty of volunteeer militia to defend wikipedia then.

I would like to know if a Chinese character --> Romanized Hakka (Pha̍k-fa-sṳ) transliteration tool has been set up online? For example, this Kyrgyz transliteration tool.

If it currently does not exist, would you be able to help set it up online?

In answer to your question, Hakka Wikipedia currently allows both scripts (Traditional and Romanized) to be used although the simplified script can also be used if they choose to. I do know of other Hakka users in Taiwan and other countries which prefer writing in Romanized Hakka. However many Hakka in the Mainland China and Southeast Asia prefer writing articles in Traditional Chinese characters (with Hakka grammar of course). Therefore this conversion tool would be greatly useful in the long term on Hakka Wikipedia. --Hak-ngìn (talk) 15:30, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Fixuture: The former is a script that I created years ago for this request. Only a couple of accounts use it, one of whom is an ArbCom-banned and one of which is an alt. Besides, as far as I know, Wikimedia projects don't even support insecure connections anymore since 2015 so the script is useless anyway.
