Information icon Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

List of spiritual entities in Islam

Greetings, you wanted me to talk to your if I disagree. Well, I disagree. First, this is a list and a Wikipedia list should be like a list. The type of list we are doing here is most likely Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Glossaries. These usually list items from A-Z. Now, as far as I understood your point of view, we should only add the entities mentioned in the Quran. This was originally my idea too, because I already suspected this going to some disputes. However, most people think we should keep the list. Now my reasons, why I think we should use this version: 1) There aren't enough creautres in the Quran. We only have these:

  • Angels (with a vast list of beigns already mentioned in the Angels in Islam article, jinn, ifrit (arguably not even an entity by itself but merely an epiphet in the Quran. Marid doesn't appear, since this is just an epiphet in the Quran, devils (arguably only "evil jinn" as many contemporary scholars argue), the Qarin (not even an entity by itself in the Quranic context), Houris and Iblis.

2) Quran isn't a good source: The nature of spirits in the Quran is ambiguos. Best example is Iblis. He might be, in Islam (including literature, poems, Muslim believes, reports from the Sahaba, Hadiths etc.) an angel, a jinn, a devil, or entirely unique. Yes, you could say "But the Quran clearly says he is one of the jinn, so all other opinions must be false". You could, but this isn't convincing, since you only understand the Quran as such, because of exegesis. "Jinn" could also be a general term for any spiritual entity. Actually, there are view points arguing that "jinn" do not exist at all, thus we could even dispute adding "jinn" as a seperate class of being (many Modernists hold this view, but this view also appears in erlier works like whose of Ghazali). So what is it? Is "jinn" just meaning "invisible" and including all sorts of invisible beigns or is it a creature on its own? We don't know, the Quran doesn't clarify, interpretation does. 3) Unclear boundaries: How do you decide that belongs to Islam and what does not?: You could arguy, "but the div are Persian", but these scholars likewise attribute them to Muhammad and we don't have any source directly going back to Muhammad, only oral traditions. The Muslims might have called them "marid" instead of "divs", the concept would nevertheless root in "Islam". How about Sakhr? Doesn't occure in contemporary theology, does this mean "he does not belong to Islam"? Sarcely not, since this refers to an entity mentiooned in the Quran, tradition just gave this entity a name. How about Khidr? Contemporary scholarship, partly even deriving from (by the way rather unqualified) scholars like Sayyid Qutb who reject this as "unislamic", would argue "this is middle Eastern tradition, not Islam". Nevetheless, a majority of Muslims genuinly identify the "mysterious man" in Surah 18 with Khidr. How do you evne want to draw the line? By the Quran, those depiction of spiritual creatures is unclear? The hadiths, with not as profound but similar issues? How do you classify Miraj Literature? Is this "jewish" and considered "Israeliyyat"? Probably not. For example the devils I added derive from Muslim sources, although not made explicit, same goes for angels like Ridwan (who exist just because of interpretation and Miraj Literature) and they also found their way partly to Turkish Wiki. Islam has no clerical hierarchy like Catholicism, so we just don't have a clear definition of Islamic supernatural creatures (this is also why I decided to write the genus behind the entity, in case of ambiguity, you can just add another one. For example Iblis (angel, Genie, Devil) instead of adding Iblis to multiple categories. Much better to read this way). Thus, there might always be an entity not accepted by someone else but believed to exist or at least play an role within the Muslim's belief-system. Establishing boundaries about what is "Islamic" and what is "falsly classified as Islamic" is always a subjective point of view. But this violates Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. If you have a fair solution, I am willing to follow your suggestions, (my first decission was to avoid this conflict by just deleting the article so this inconsistence between different point of views within Islam would not be made evident) but if there is merely your personal point of view about what "Islam" is, I must, unfortunately, insist to make sure we have a neutral point of view here, adding every point of view, which includes every entity deriving from Muslim sources. Replaceable fair use File:Ryan Kaji child star.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Ryan Kaji child star.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to
    Di-replaceable fair use disputed
    |<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 22:35, 17 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
