Althusser
Hi I read your comments on the talk of Louis Althusser and I added a bit of the Judt quote to the article. I wondered if you could find Thompson's critque of him online, or a quote or review, or if you have it, as the article mentions his polemic but doesn't explain what his problems with Althusser's work are. special, random, Merkinsmum 22:48, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Why sources should be cited
Good question. I hope the following helps a bit. Wikipedia is by its very nature a work by people with widely different knowledge and skills. The reader needs to be assured that the material within it is reliable: this is especially important where statements are made about controversial issues or living persons. The purpose of citing your sources is:
- To improve the credibility of Wikipedia.
- To avoid claims of plagiarism.
- To show that your edit is not original research and to reduce editorial disputes.
- To ensure that the content of articles can be checked by any reader or editor.
- To help users find additional information on the topic.
- To ensure that material about living persons complies with Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons.
- For how to write citations, see Wikipedia:Citing sources
The burden of evidence lies with the editor who adds or restores material. All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged should be attributed to a reliable, published source using an inline citation. When content in Wikipedia requires direct substantiation, the established convention is to provide an inline citation to the supporting references. The rationale is that this provides the most direct means to verify whether the content is consistent with the references. Alternative conventions exist, and are acceptable when they provide clear and precise attribution for the article's assertions, but inline citations are considered "best practice" under this rationale. For more details, please consult Wikipedia:Citing_sources#How_to_cite_sources. The source should be cited clearly and precisely to enable readers to find the text that supports the article content in question.
If no reliable, third-party sources can be found for an article topic, Wikipedia should not have an article on it.
Any edit lacking a reliable source may be removed, but editors may object if you remove material without giving them a chance to provide references. If you want to request a source for an unsourced statement, consider moving it to the
}}. Use the edit summary to give an explanation of your edit. You may also leave a note on the talk page or an invisible HTML comment on the article page.Do not leave unsourced information in articles about
I can NOT emphasize this enough. There seems to be a terrible bias among some editors that some sort of random speculative 'I heard it somewhere' pseudo information is to be tagged with a 'needs a cite' tag. Wrong. It should be removed, aggressively, unless it can be sourced. This is true of all information, but it is particularly true of negative information about living persons.

Thanks for uploading File:Valdy performing in 1976.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:
- Go to di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
- On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fut.Perf. ☼ 12:57, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Fun isn't it - you upload a new image and it don't change - join the club. Only it does, but for some reason the file image page don't show it for some time - even purging and refreshing fail to wake it up. Anyway, the image was on commons as well, so I've moved you colour corrected copy to the commons image, and deleted all the en-wiki ones. If you are lucky, by the time you read this it might have updated! - if not just click the image on the file page to see the real saved image. Ronhjones (Talk) 17:49, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
WW1 & The Cranes are flying?
Hi there,
in this Soviet film it is I believe the case that the young woman searches for her soldier in a convoy leaving for WWII, right? Now, I just saw a US WWI film fragment where the actress (could be Mary Pickford, don't know for sure) actually does find her man. Do you know whether the Cranes are Flying is playing with that earlier US film or not? It could also be that the leaving soldiers is a rather generic scene used in many war films. 83.83.1.229 (talk) 19:37, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, only just saw this. Departure of soldiers is certainly generic. In Cranes are Flying, I was referencing the ending of the film, soldiers returning. The young lady realizes that her boyfriend is not coming back with the others, that he has been killed. She transmutes her sorrow by giving away the flowers of welcome she had brought with her to other soldiers, more or less randomly. As to double bills, I've no idea what other films it has been paired with. Long ago, when I saw it, it was on a double bill with Tarkovsky's Andrey Rubilov (not sure of the spelling of that name), totally different film. Sorry I can't be more help.
