Do you have a source for the renaming of the 17th Guards Tank Brigade? Kges1901 (talk) 23:05, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

Most Ukrainian military units have the 'Guards' title. For example,

51st Mechanized Brigade, 30th Mechanized Brigade, etc. But for the sake of readability the article's names miss that title, just like the most other decorations (orders and other honorable titles). It adds literally nothing in terms of sense, so it makes sense to drop that. --VoidWanderer (talk

Don't do this, please, without a discussion at a major-watched talk page. "Guards" is a standard inclusion in fSU formation titles, to distinguish those units from non-Guards units. They have very jealously coveted history, that should be explained about WHY they gained a Guards title, - significant amounts in terms of sense, if the history is properly written out. As you'll see from the Holm site and Russian wikipedia, these should be listed immediately after the title of the unit, eg '27th Guards Sevastopol Motor Rifle Brigade (Military Unit Number (V/Ch) xxxxx'. Please do add them in the definition sentence. The Holm site lists changes of V/Chs, and these are a big deal, so should also be added to the text of the article. Many thanks for creating the page!! Hi, thanks for the appreciation. But let me clarify something - the Military Unit Number shouldn't be listed immediately. It's not a rule. It's just another approach of identification of a unit. But, like you've already mentioned, this unique ID of a unit may be changed - it's just another way to keep things secret. Especially during Soviet times. The relatives of a soldier could not even knew back then where he's serving and in what particular unit. All they knew was that single number (code), and they had sent letters there. This should be clarified in the article, of course, but I can't express it properly right now. Can't find the proper wording. --VoidWanderer (talk) 10:56, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

Mate, wikipedia follows the published sources. We, especially in the fSU military units and formations field, have been assiduous in making sure we follow as closely as possible the conventions of people like

David Glantz and John Erickson

, not to mention Vitaly Feskov, who are the world published experts in this field. That gives the articles credibility, instead of just being another fanboy website. Now, Michael Holm has done the world a service and made sure all these numbers are transcribed from Feskov et al 2013 and available for us to insert. If you're not going to follow the world standard published source conventions, I need to know now. (I do not mean that I expect you to spend hours immediately inserting every V/Ch in the definition sentence; adding them all in with the links will take a while.)

Regarding the V/Ch itself, yes, of course; I did read Suvorov/Rezin's Inside the Soviet Army many years ago now, and I know this. Suvorov/Rezin harped on security considerably. The wording you're reaching for is reasonably clear in the Russian wikipedia article, which I've GTranslated a couple of times. G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. "Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.
