Thank you today for U-1-class submarine (Austria-Hungary), about "Austria-Hungary's first attempt at acquiring submarines for their navy. Built by an American naval architect, the ships had several interesting design mechanics that you don't often see on many other submarines, such as a diving chamber to enter and exit the submarine while it was underwater, as well as wheels (yes, wheels) to travel along the seafloor. As an experimental design, not all of the components of the U-1 class worked out in the end (the wheels proved to be entirely useless), and it was widely lambasted as a failure (in particular, the engines of both ships were a major issue, nearly killing their crews with poison gas before they were replaced)"! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:36, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi White Shadows, I see you have worked on the Austria-Hungary article and took part in a controversial discussion concerning the country's flag. I have searched a bit through the web, looking for posters from Olympic Games and International Exhibitions, and it seems to me that at the time, at least from an international point of view, the Empire was perceived as a single entity instead of two states with some common administration under the same monarch. So, posters usually displayed a single flag to represent the Empire instead of two, using the civil ensign or the imperial standard alternatively. Only the 1912 Summer Olympics' poster depicts both the Austrian and the Hungarian flags. I don't know whether this might be relevant to the discussion, but it seems to me that the civil ensign was something more than a flag flown by merchant ships ([1] [2]). I chose to contact you instead of starting a new discussion on the A-U talk page as I believed that it would have ended up similarly to the previous one. I believe the best solution could be that of using the civil ensign (possibly this rather than this oversimplified version), adding an explanatory footnote with the other two flags, like in the Paraguay article.

I completely agree. I hope we can have a second RfC on the page soon that's more neutral in tone and includes arguments like this in the discussion. It's a shame that "status quo" now means removing the civil ensign, which was used for the article for decades before a small group of editors incorrectly thought it no longer belongs on the infobox.
