Calvinist Dutch United Provinces, it was discovered in a bombed out church in South Hackney, London in 1956. The scene depicted is taken from the Gospel of John
: "When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home."
Reason
High quality painting, unknown for over three centuries, and discovered in a bombed out church. The stories this work could tell...
