Though the Commons copy of "I Want to Know What Love Is" is deleted per DelReq discussion at Commons, Jameslwoodward says that the image is uncopyrightable in the USA. If that is the case, the image should be tagged as "{{PD-ineligible-USonly}}". However, the 3D "F" image looks original enough in the USA. Also, the image is the "work for hire," and Atlantic Records may claim copyright of the artwork due to copyright notice on the album. Even when the typeface of "Foreigner" is unoriginal, does the whole artwork itself meet US's threshold of originality? George Ho (talk) 02:10, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As I said on Commons, twice, typefaces do not have a copyright in the USA. The 3D "F" is only one letter, but nonetheless as one letter of a typeface, the letter itself cannot have a USA copyright. There is no copyright for arrangement of letters (typography) in the USA as there is in the UK. Although "I Want to Know What Love Is" is a full sentence and might have a copyright, song and book titles cannot be copyrighted. Therefore there is nothing on the album cover that can have a copyright. Whether or not there is a copyright, the work for hire issue is irrelevant. This is just silly. Cover artwork cannot be copyrighted at all. Removing the deletion notice cluttering up the info box right now. If there's a font issue, then that issue is delegated to the artwork creator, not Wikipedia! OFC there's some sort of fair use going on here and on the millions (?) of other cover artworks going on at Wikipedia, Spotify and other streaming and cataloging services on the internet, in printed form etc etc etc... Cover artwork certainly can be copyrighted, but this one, I would say is too simple for USA copyright. It can be used under fair use and public domain due to simplicity at the same time, but the fair use claim is not needed. I suggest that it is changed to PD-simple. This image is of the German release of the Eric Clapton recording. It is currently used in After Midnight (J. J. Cale song). However, I uploaded File:After Midnight by Eric Clapton UK vinyl single.png as free to use only in English Wikipedia (not transferable in Wikimedia Commons). Therefore, the German image may fail NFCC, especially the "no free equivalent," "contextual significance," "content," and "minimal usage" criteria.
