Unused in any article, identical quality article of a different filetype at File:Bulgarian25YearsOfPeople'sRuleRibbon.jpg on Commons which now fulfills the purpose this image once did. Both images uploaded by the same uploader, so the one used in the article is presumably the one they intended to use. ~ Rob13Talk 02:11, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Odd nomination. This is probably in scope at Commons in the sense that it's an entrance to a building of Boston College, which is notable, but we have no information on which building, so I struggle to justify moving this over. Thoughts? It shouldn't be kept locally, as it's unused. ~ Rob13Talk 03:36, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. First, I'll point out the most obvious: three keep arguments versus one delete argument (the nominator). The spelling on the English poster was changed. This is not a valid argument in the slightest in regards to

WP:FILMNFI
, particularly the second and third paragraphs:

"Non-free images used in film articles must meet Wikipedia's

acceptable uses for non-free images
, including two that are most relevant to WikiProject Film. Film and television screen shots are for critical commentary and discussion of the cinema and television. Promotional material such as posters, programs, billboards, ads are also for critical commentary. Critical commentary and discussion of the film must come from
original research
from the editors themselves. Critical commentary should be embedded in the body of the film article. A non-free image can be used to illustrate the target element of the critical commentary only if it cannot adequately be substituted by a free equivalent image or descriptive text. The non-free image should be significant in increasing the readers' understanding of the topic. Non-free images can illustrate technical or thematic aspects of the film. Examples include, but are not limited to: production design, makeup, costume design, camera technique, visual effects, lighting, and iconic shots."

Deletion discussion venues are not decided by the number of keep and delete arguments, but by the strengths of its arguments in regards to policy. Not only did the keep arguments fail to address the nominator's concern, they completely disregarded both WikiProject guidelines and project-wide policy in doing so in this discussion and the ones below. xplicit 05:01, 30 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. Image appears to be decorative. Not used in the infobox, does not have any prose in the article to explain its use via critical commentary relating to the image. Appears to be decorative. User and I have discussed that this image should be representing the American version of the film which is different from the original release, but I do not think this image suggests this enough.

Keep. Image is used to represent altered English version of Foreign film for readers of the English Wikipedia. These Japanese films were all altered and edited for US release and these alterations (whether its removal of scenes, addition of new scenes, or simple dubbing) are mentioned in the articles. These posters give a visual of these altered versions to illustrate the sections in regards to the English release and will give readers of the English Wikipedia a better understanding and more familiar visual of the altered/modified English version of the films in question giving readers a visual for the version that is featured predominately in the Western market via TV airings or home video releases through the decades.Giantdevilfish (talk) 14:38, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Just to clarify with this, these images are mostly promotional material related to the American version but there is no cited commentary or prose about what makes this image required to explain the differences in the films that is not already explained by prose. This goes for all the posters I mentioned with only a few exceptions. Andrzejbanas (talk) 19:13, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Keep. There is some significant commentary illustrated in the Release section of the article. It notes the American version's run time, that it was double billed with Harum Scarum, that Ghidorah masks were produced for promotional tie ins for the American release, and the section also notes the significant changes in the US version. Since the Release section makes various notes on the US cut and since the poster is already attached to the Release section, it would make sense to keep the poster. Armegon (talk) 21:57, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

But that content is not related to the poster. Having the poster doesn't explain anything the text that doesn't. So this fails

The visual isn't really key. American film posters from this era often differ from their original country of productions counterparts, but it doesn't mean they are altered or not. The prose explains this, the image does not. Andrzejbanas (talk) 21:25, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Keep. The English version section does have some significant information regarding the US version, which is altered from the Japanese original. The US poster is not decorative but helps to illustrate the US version of the film. Armegon (talk) 22:01, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

But it does not specifically do this.
Can you explain how it helps other than giving a visual identifier? The film is altered, but the image does not help show how this happens. Andrzejbanas (talk) 21:25, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I understand that the American versions of these films were what most Western viewers had seen, but it does not actually enhance the understanding of the content, nor is their any content in the prose (or from many of my research) on how the promotion of this material (specifically with this poster) is anything special. Just by looking at the poster, could you tell the film was altered? You can not get anything other than it did not use the English title, which is already provided by prose and a copyrighted image does not enhance this in any way. I believe this argument fails
WP:FILMNFI as the inclusion of the image does not represent any critical commentary.Andrzejbanas (talk) 18:38, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply

How does it give it a better idea? All the giant monster films from Japan were altered (some far more than others) when first released in the United States. This poster does not suggest how much/little of the film was edited. I mean, I wouldn't include the picture of the DVD that has the Japanese version of the film on the article to represent a home video release of different versions. It would be helpful, but the actual graphic doesn't help anyone without critical commentary, which does not require a poster. Andrzejbanas (talk) 19:47, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The poster does not explain any of this information and it's not unusal for films to have different versions outside their home production country. Other than illustrating the sections, they don't enchance the readers understanding of the prose, so that doesn't pass it's copyright info. Not to mention there is not much information regarding the American production. Andrzejbanas (talk) 14:29, 28 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

But the image is not required to understand the changes, like a picture of an American actor/producer/anything would illustrate it better because it would relate to the text. Comment Reduced image back to original. Point of issue seems to be that its oversized, so I returned it to the original smaller photo. Still say information about U.S title is better illustrated with an actual picture of the poster.Giantdevilfish (talk) 13:29, 2 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Andrzejbanas (talk) 13:58, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Keep. Image is used to represent altered English version of Foreign film for readers of the English Wikipedia. These Japanese films were all altered and edited for US release and these alterations (whether its removal of scenes, addition of new scenes, or simple dubbing) are mentioned in the articles. These posters give a visual of these altered versions to illustrate the sections in regards to the English release and will give readers of the English Wikipedia a better understanding and more familiar visual of the altered/modified English version of the films in question giving readers a visual for the version that is featured predominately in the Western market via TV airings or home video releases through the decades.Giantdevilfish (talk) 14:42, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Keep. The English version section does have some significant information regarding the US version, which is altered from the Japanese original. The US poster is not decorative but helps to illustrate the US version of the film. Armegon (talk) 22:01, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think you said it yourself when you mentioned that they just illustrate the sections as they do not contain any specific information can not be described by text. Andrzejbanas (talk) 04:11, 28 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The text in that section is unsourced and we require sourced critical commentary to balance out the poster. Currently we don't, and even if it was, this lacks commentary that requires the image to understand it. Andrzejbanas (talk) 04:11, 28 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
