Could you make an SVG of the PNG, with all the same colour zones and numbers? The PNG was derived from File:Map of Kentucky highlighting Ballard County.svg. 49.198.51.54 (talk) 21:19, 13 March 2022 (UTC)

  •  Done Please note that the generated map has been saved in human-editable plain text format, making every part of it easily customizable. The counties have been assigned their own codes and grouped into numerical districts. The rest should be fairly self-explanatory. M.Bitton (talk) 00:06, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

The location map for the Pacific West conference has Hawaii, California and Utah highlighted. The only Utah school left in 2017 and so the map should only show California and Hawaii. Could you please update https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PWCstates.png (not sure if this is the correct place to request for those in commons) Naraht (talk) 15:28, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

@Naraht: Would you mind if the map is converted to SVG? M.Bitton (talk) 16:05, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

M.Bitton Don't mind! Have fun! (is that the type of file that all you have to do is change one value in "text" to flip an area from one color to another?)Naraht (talk) 16:46, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
 Done @Naraht: Indeed. M.Bitton (talk) 23:51, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

Mass-replace png with svg?

Hey, does anyone know if there is a method of (semi-)automatically replacing png images in articles with their equivalent SVG? I am thinking about re-making a map in SVG, which is a lot of work (but somewhat interesting), but I don't want to replace the image like 200 times in a dozen different wikipedias, which is a lot of work (and incredibly boring). So before I start the work, I'd like to know if this is effective. I have no interest in adding to the long list of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Top_200_images_which_have_a_vector_version_available_by_usage - I really don't.--91.64.209.25 (talk) 19:59, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

Yes, SVG maps can be scaled better, but good maps usually contains a lot of text, also curved text etc. and the wiki renderer often does not display the fonts correctly. As a cartographer I just don't want to keep several versions of maps which contains embedded text. They are useless when you need to update the maps. Then you have to place the text completely new. But you can only understand something so annoying if you have actually made maps by yourself. --Lencer (talk) 10:05, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Request

Is there any way to replace the main png map of Ukraine's article with an svg version, since it would obviously just look so much more better/clearer? I asked on Ukraine's talk page and they referred me to here so I don't know? Specifically this file File:Ukraine (orthographic projection).png. Hgh1985 (talk) 04:21, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

@Hgh1985: With regard to the light green regions: do you have any idea what source was used to highlight part of the Donbas? M.Bitton (talk) 17:11, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

@M.Bitton: I have no clue Hgh1985 (talk) 17:50, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
 Done @Hgh1985: Luckily, some of the maps in the Donbas article are sourced (I used the sources to show the occupied territories). You'll notice that I created two maps: a "SVG base map" and a "SVG requested map" (the SVG equivalent of the png map). Also, unlike the png map, the projection is centred on Ukraine (in line with similar maps). M.Bitton (talk) 22:27, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

Can I please get an orthographic projection centered and highlighting South Africa on the article? The current one there doesn't have South Africa centered. -- Flags200 (talk) 04:16, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

  •  Done @Flags200: To be honest, I'm not sure it's an improvement over what's in the article as it may it look quite remote from the rest of the African countries. Maybe centring it on where the Zambia, Angola and DRC borders meet could yield a better a result. Have a look and let me know what you think. M.Bitton (talk) 21:58, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

@M.bitton: It looks great. The current map in the South Africa article is centered on the democratic republic of the Congo and because of that, South Africa looks a bit distorted. Flags200 (talk)

In January this year Atauro (the pink island at the top) was split from Dili. If someone would be able to upload a new file dated 2022 with this split included, that would be appreciated. The simplest solution is probably creating a new version of the current image and just changing Atauro to a new colour and adding a label, although I'm not tied to the format at all if anyone is interested in creating something different. Thanks, CMD (talk) 07:46, 14 May 2022 (UTC)
