Wikipedia:Eliminators

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's
talk page or in a deletion review
). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. There is a strong consensus against the current target. Beyond that the !votes are 5 to 3 for deletion versus retargeting; the arguments for both are subjective ("it's the closest thing" vs. "but it's not the same thing", essentially), leaving a rough consensus for the numerically most-supported option.

Extremely unlikely redirect. This is not a common term for "moderator" and Wikipedia does not have moderators, let alone "eliminators". As such it appears to be

pointy. Grachester (talk) 15:55, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply

  • Keep per CentralAuth "groups" section. (e.g: Special:CentralAuth/Tryvix1509, who is a moderator in Vietnamese Wikipedia.) ☀DefenderTienMinh☽ (talk) 15:59, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • For clarity, an eliminator is a role that exists in some non-English Wikipedias, see d:Q10862160, giving users the ability to delete pages. I'm still inclined to delete since this is not a system that exists on enwiki and none of the proposal pages mention the name. eviolite (talk) 03:13, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, looks sufficiently related: the version of what we might call a Moderator on other Wikipedias. Thus I think this target is helpful enough. There doesn't seem to be a meta page on this – otherwise a soft redirect would be a solid target. J947edits 04:24, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to WP:Administrators. This is a lightweight version of the administrator group used on some projects that only allows page deletion - the equivalent group here is admins, who are the only people that have access to the delete functionality. If someone from another project comes here looking for information on eliminators the only relevant result on that dab page is WP:Administrators, they aren't going to be looking for information on the various content mediation proposals, rollbackers or recent changes patrollers. 192.76.8.86 (talk) 22:51, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete per Eviolite. Also, we aren't Wikidata; if it doesn't exist here, it doesn't exist here. The individual Wikipedias are not translation services. Steel1943 (talk) 01:15, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
However, seems such a user right existing in other Wikipedias may validate starting a proposal for such a right here, unbundling even more administrative tools... Steel1943 (talk) 01:18, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to WP:Administrators: There is no point for the WP:Moderator page to exist either, but that's not the focus, the redirect should just redirect to the most common idea (administrators) FusionSub (talk) 10:06, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The issue with that line of thinking is that it seems that per other Wikimedia projects, this term is supposed to refer to a standalone user right exclusive from administrators which allows non-admins to delete pages; such a right does not exist on the English (this) Wikipedia. Steel1943 (talk) 23:35, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Wikipedia:Administrators. Because of the existence of a parallel on other projects. --Bsherr (talk) 14:31, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per eviolite, the parallel is actively misleading if the roles aren't actually equivalent. signed, Rosguill talk 00:57, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per eviolite, or retarget if WP:Administrators has even a cursory mention of this non-enwiki role. Jay 💬 14:15, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I thought I was creating a redirect from "Niue People's Action Party" (which already exists), and only realized after the fact that I typed "Part" instead of "Party". I don't think this is a common typo or search for the target article and thus should be deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Upjav (talkcontribs) 14:44, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at each redirect one-by-one:

Jantra (album)
: Not sure: currently no mention at current target, one-line mention at the list. All that the list says is that it's an album by Zubeen Garg that came out in 2004. Not really helpful if the reader is looking for encyclopedic information, but OK for basic data.
Akou Hiyamon: ☒N Delete: currently no mention at current target, one mention at the list that implies existence but gives no helpful information.
Akow Hiyamon:☒N Delete: currently no mention at either target... possibly a typo or alternate name for Akou Hiyamon?

Doctor Moro

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's ). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was no consensus (default to delete) On the one hand, a plurality of editors (511) favor retargeting to the book. On the other hand, while the remaining 6 editors are split in their preferences (4 delete, 2 retarget to surname page), they are unanimous in opposing the plurality's preferred option. And there has been enough participation that a third relist is not indicated. So, trying to treat this something like
BOLDly recreating with their preferred target, to be discussed at a future RfD if necessary. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 04:52, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply

  • Retarget to The Island of Doctor Moreau and HATNOTE Moro (surname) -- alternatively disambiguate the title, with The Island of Doctor Moreau and the persons from the surname article who are doctors of some sort or other -- 64.229.90.172 (talk) 22:36, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Redirect to The Island of Doctor Moreau as this would be the natural misspelling for native English speakers who have heard someone say "Doctor Moreau" but never seen it written (or has forgotten how it is spelled). I would not object to a disambiguation page as an alternative, nor would I object to hatnotes, but I think the H.G.Wells story is definitely the primary topic here. Even the minor Kirby character this redirect was originally created for was likely named for the H.G.Wells story. Fieari (talk) 06:57, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget Moro (surname) while I think it's plausible that people would search for The Island of Doctor Moreau this way, it would look very silly to have a hatnote "Doctor Moro redirects here..." at that article, and I think it is equally plausible that people would be looking for someone actually named Dr. Moro. It would be a bit less silly to have a hatnote at Moro (surname) as that page is a) already a disambiguation b) doesn't have a hatnote yet. signed, Rosguill talk 01:12, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to The Island of Doctor Moreau per Fieari. Oppose retarget or hatnote to Moro (surname), a page that has 21 entries, none of the articles of which mention the subject with a title of Doctor, and for which reason I won't favour the dab page suggestion as well from IP64. The closest would be Ernst Moro (physician and pediatrician), followed by Sergio Moro who completed his PhD and obtained the title of Doctor, but there is no way a reader who knows only the surname can figure this out by looking at the surname dab. Jay 💬 14:57, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't delete – search results are unhelpful, apart from listing Sergio Moro. Strongly oppose a hatnote at The Island of Doctor Moreau per Rosguill. I'll slightly support the book over the surname as a target, as I think a majority of readers searching this phrase will be looking for the famous book, but as Rosguill says the hatnote situation complicates things. I think Kirby's Doctor Moro might constitute a fair portion of the views, but readers looking for that won't be helped anyhow. For those readers, the most helpful thing we can do is to retarget to the book the character is based off. J947edits 01:56, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Relisting comment: Thoughts on retargeting?
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, plicit 01:47, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete per nom. The proposed retargeting is thoughtful but IMO would still muddle things considerably. Not all redirects to a work are necessarily redirects from the work's creator. They could also be from a related topic just as {{r from work}} redirects may target other related topics than creators. Users invoking this template would likely expect it to do what it says, and unless such a template is actually going to be created we aren't helping anyone by having a redirect that merely maintains the illusion that such a template exists. -- Visviva (talk) 03:38, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. I agree that the proposed retargeting is not optimal - the proposed target is not synonymous with this redirects meaning. The singular use of this tag is a redirect from the name of a theatre to a notable play that was performed there - the proposed target wouldn't be correct. 163.1.15.238 (talk) 15:01, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The Christian God is not the only one to be incomprehensible (see God in Judaism, God in Islam). There is no good retarget. Therefore, I propose deletion. Veverve (talk) 01:30, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep: Most people searching would be looking for the attribute of the Christian God - that is what virtually all the Google search results are talking about (and without any further qualification). StAnselm (talk) 02:54, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • Most people in the world are not Christian, and the largest English speaking locality in the world by population is India, where Christianity is not dominant. So, if we were to look at it from a global perspective, it shouldn't be the case. -- 64.229.90.172 (talk) 21:43, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Break out into a separate article, which would parallel most of the other concepts in the current target article (e.g. Divine simplicity, Divine providence, Omnipotence). I don't think we can say what "most people" will be looking for. Wikipedia is read all over the world. BD2412 T 16:31, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak Delete - I think I would prefer a comprehensive article on the topic covering multiple religions that use the concept (as BD2412 says), but barring that, yeah, this does seem to have no primary topic. Fieari (talk) 05:52, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Did you Google the phrase? The Google results suggest a very clear primary topic. StAnselm (talk) 15:25, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@StAnselm: It sounds like you have already started the research, so why not just write an article? You could stub out something adequate fairly quickly, I think. BD2412 T 22:34, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I did google it. I do see that the English speaking internet using this phrase is predominantly Christian, however Islam and Judaism both have the concept as well and we would do well to get ahead of systemic bias here. Fieari (talk) 04:01, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This simple word is not always used to refer to a divine being in Christianity. Currently, this is misleading. Therefore, I propose either deletion or retarget to the comprehension DAB. Veverve (talk) 01:28, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I had no thought about that; I have edited my proposal accordingly. Veverve (talk) 03:34, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure if this redirect is helpful. What do you think? Veverve (talk) 00:29, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The redirect's title refers to this Catholic Encyclopedia article. The article is a long, polemical argument in favour of the Catholic position on grace that details other positions; and none of its content can be found on Wikipedia.

The previous target was Salvation in Christianity which was even less logical of a target. I have changed the target to the current one, as it is the only article that relates to some controversies about grace WP has.

Therefore, I propose deletion. Veverve (talk) 00:26, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Agree with deletion page had a total of 134 views in the last year (May 2022-April 2023) while Salvation in Christianity and Congregatio had 140k & 4k respectively. pageviews
If consensus is to retarget, I support retargetting to Grace in Christianity. Referencer12 (talk) 04:12, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete the wording of topic names on the Catholic Encyclopedia may be completely useless, as it is here; as this is a subtopic formatted article name, and we don't do that formatting on Wikipedia -- 64.229.90.172 (talk) 17:45, 28 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - The best possible target would be an article comparing different religions/sects interpretation of the word "grace", with a redirect from non-neutral name template stuck on it, but I don't think we have such an article. If we do, I suggest retargeting there. Otherwise, delete. Fieari (talk) 05:57, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
