Wikipedia:University of Edinburgh/30th Month Report

NB: This month was slightly shorter as I was on annual leave in Ireland from 19th June to 26th June 2018.

Strategic Goal 1

Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content.

Outcomes

• Gavin Willshaw ran his second Wikipedia training session (following hot on the heels of the Portobello Library editathon earlier this year). This event was the first editathon for University of Edinburgh Library & University Collections staff and was focused on creating new articles for notable PhD thesis authors.
• 6 new articles were created and 1 improved.
• Feedback was good when the articles were reviewed e.g. "What a pleasure to see a proper article by a new editor for once! Well done!"
• Further editathons are planned (2nd August 2018) and the Library and University Collections has included Wikimedia work in its new digitisation strategy.
• Held first planning meeting on 27 June 2018 for an Ada Lovelace Day 2018 event celebrating the achievements of Women in STEM (and to include a Contemporary Women in STEM Wikipedia editathon) to be held at the University of Edinburgh's Science & Engineering quarter on 9 October 2018. Colleagues from Information Services and from the College of Science & Engineering were in attendance and it was decided to crowdsource a Call for Ideas of engaging talks and activites we could host as part of the day. Initial discussion notes are here. 2nd meeting planned for 31 July 2018.
• Ran a How to run a Wikipedia Translation workshop training session at the Celtic Knot Conference 2018 to encourage other attendees to run their own translation workshops especially in education contexts with a view to supporting under-presented Celtic and Indigenous languages. New SPLOT resource created to help facilitate this.

Strategic Goal 2

Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.

Outcomes

• My Repository Fringe 2018 conference proposal for a 10 x 10 presentation (10 slides in 10 minutes) on Wiki Wicca: the Wikidata in the Classroom project was accepted and delivered at the conference on 3rd July 2018.
• I also delivered a 10 x 10 presentation on the University of Edinburgh's OER Service at Repository Fringe 2018 on 3 July 2018.
• Presented on Measuring the impact of Wikimedians in Academia(slides) at the first Academia and Wikipedia conference at Maynooth University in Ireland on 18 June 2018.
• Attended the Wikimedians in Residence meetup at the National Library of Wales on the afternoon of 4th July 2018. Discussion surrounded whether Wikimedia UK's current strategy needed to change/evolve to better meet the new global strategy of the Wikimedia Foundation in addition to updates on the current work being conducted by Wikimedians in Residence at institutions throughout the UK and any areas of development they may need assistance with and how Wikimedia UK can help meet these needs going forward.
• Delivered an hour long Wikipedia Translation workshop at the second ever Celtic Knot: Wikipedia Language Conference, held this year on 5-6 July at the National Library of Wales. New SPLOT resource unveiled.
• Chaired the Wikidata conference track at the second ever Celtic Knot: Wikipedia Language Conference, held this year at the National Library of Wales.
• Submitted a proposal for How to run a Wikipedia editathon workshop to the Engage 2018 NCCPE conference taking place in Edinburgh this November. This has since been rejected.
• Submitted an abstract for a chapter on the Wikipedia translation assignment to the Call for Papers for the second volume of the Case Studies of Openness in the Language Classroom open access book which has as its goal "to represent the current landscape of open practices in language learning and teaching around the globe and reflect on how openness is understood in different contexts". This has since been approved so I will be submitting a chapter of around 3000 words by October 15th this year.
• Was interviewed by Ian Chowcat at Sero Consulting on 26 June 2018 as the Edinburgh residency is to form one of the case studies Sero is undertaking for Jisc on TEL/OER practice. The resulting 2700 word case study has been rewritten twice this month and is co-authored by the resident and Ian Chowcat. It has now been submitted to JISC for review.
• Hosted the first ScotWiki Partners' Meeting on 10 July at the University of Edinburgh Library. This was lead by Scotland Programme Co-ordinator for Wikimedia UK, Sara Thomas, and in attendance were Anne-Marie Scott (Deputy Director Learning Teaching & Web Services at the University of Edinburgh), Gill Hamilton (National Library of Scotland), Rosie Al-Mulla (University of Stirling and NHS Forth Valley Archivist), Kelly Forbes (Museums & Galleries Scotland), Lorna Campbell (University of Edinburgh's OER Service and Wikimedia UK Board member), Delphine Dallison (Wikimedian in Residence at the Scottish Library and Information Council) and Gillian Daly (Knowledge Exchange Partnerships Manager at the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities).

Strategic Goal 3

To support the use of the Wikimedia projects as important tools for education and learning in the UK.

Outcomes

• 3 people trained by Digital Skills trainer, Andrew Kirk, on 21 June 2018 including Kevin Grant from Historic Environment Scotland who has booked to come on our 12 July Train the Trainer course.
• Attended preparatory meetings to help support Academic Support Librarian colleagues from the University of Edinburgh (Marshall Dozier, Ruth Jenkins and Donna Watson) to be able to run a How to run a Wikipedia editathon for health information librarians attending the EAHIL Conference in Cardiff with in-person support from Jason Evans, National Wikimedian for Wales. Helped initially prepare the accompanying SPLOT resource to help structure this session which Ruth, Marshall and Donna then tailored and populated with event-specific details.
• Truncated an article I co-wrote with law undergraduate student, Jemima John, so it could be featured on the University of Edinburgh's Teaching Matters blogs: Wikipedia in the Classroom – how students are shaping the open web appeared on 26 June 2018.
• Met with Simon Fokt, Learning Technologist at the University of Edinburgh's School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, on 13 June 2018 to discuss the Wikipedia component on the Intellectual Humility MOOC and how we might garner greater engagement with the component through scaffolding activities better.
• Met with Stephanie 'Charlie' Farley, OER Service at the University of Edinburgh, on 14 June 2018 to discuss our current projects and how we might garner greater engagement with the Wikipedia component on the Intellectual Humility MOOC through scaffolding activities better as Charlie runs the award-winning 23 Things at the University of Edinburgh and this online course has garnered great engagement through scaffolding short, playful activities that also includes a Wikipedia component.
• Wrote up the Wikidata in the Classroom - the Data Science for Design MSc project as a case study. It has since been shared on social media and on Wikidata's status updates for w/c 9th July 2018.

Activities delivered in the past month with stats:

• Working with Vicki Madden to organise a Mental Health Awareness event during Wellbeing Week (12-16 November 2018) at the University of Edinburgh.
• Continuing to liaise with Hannah Evans at Wikimedia UK about the production of a new UK-based booklet of Wikipedia in the Classroom case studies.
• Gavin Willshaw, digital curator at the University of Edinburgh, has planned in 1 more Wikipedia training event to take place 11am to 4pm for Library and University Collections Staff on 2nd August.
• Another iteration of the Wikipedia assignment in the Reproductive Biology Hons. course has been confirmed to go ahead in September 2018.
• Another iteration of the Wikipedia assignment on the Translation Studies MSc course has been confirmed to go ahead in September 2018.
• Wikipedia editing assignment for the Global Health MSc course - postponed until October 2018 due to Felix Stein working in Haiti at the moment.
• A collaboration with Michael Seery at the School of Chemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry to be confirmed.
• Ada Lovelace Day 2018 is confirmed as going ahead at the School of Chemistry again in October 2018; working with Michael Seery and Jenni Garden. The focus this year may be on contemporary women in chemistry.
• Awaiting word from Sara Mortsell at Wikimedia Sweden about her plan to collaborate on a Wikipedia in Education knowledge sharing exercise between Wikimedia Sweden, Stockholm University, the University of Edinburgh and Tel Aviv University.
• Showcase 'Wiki Loves Libraries' event for SDLC and SLIC representatives still mooted - awaiting word from Kirsty Lingstadt (Head of Digital Library) and liaising with Gavin Willshaw, Digital Curator on date and format.
• The import of thesis collection data to Wikidata from the Edinburgh Research Archive is to go ahead now Library Developer Mike Bennett's contract is continuing. Completed necessary preparatory work; just awaiting Mike finishing developing the tool that converts ALMA library catalogue data into a Wikidata-friendly import.
• Continuing to add more data to Wikidata from the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database. More to be added at Wikidata's 6th Birthday celebration on 31 October 2018.

• The Wikimedian in Residence channel on Youtube which has now received over 36,812 views in total of its 68 videos with 166 subscribers (1,990 more views and 8,382 minutes watched approx. since last month with 8 more subscribers, 30 'likes', and 12 'shares' since last month). These videos have been viewed in over 106 different countries this month and in 168 countries around the world over the course of the channel's lifetime. 131,154 minutes have now been watched since the channel started.
