Wasp feeding on a fly

Original - After paralysing the fly with the sting, a sand wasp (Bembix oculata) is sucking its internal fluids using a beak-like extension of the mouth-parts. The fly won't survive the experience.
Reason
Difficult and uncommon shot. The relative rarity mitigates the less-than-optimal quality

Valued pictures was a project to highlight images that add significant value to Wikipedia articles, either by illustrating article content particularly well, or by being a hard to obtain free use image of the content being illustrated. Per the consensus on Miscellany for Deletion, this project has been shut down.

This is not to be confused with Valued Images on Commons.

  • Support very good image for illustrating Wikipedia articles, as demonstrated by its use in 4 articles. Strong composition as well, attracting the attention of the reader. Only minor issue is the slightly tight crop on the top, but overall a good image. Elekhh (talk) 05:10, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • I would have loved to have had a little more headroom, but I did not want to lose the tennis courts in the bottom left corner, as they're useful for scale. --JN466 23:19, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Anne Frank House Amsterdam

Original - The canal-side façade of the former Opekta building on the Prinsengracht canal. Anne Frank's hiding place was at the rear, in an enclosed courtyard.
Reason
Very good quality image of an important historic place. Appears in three key articles (with a total of over 300,000 views this month). Has been recognised as quality image on commons, however failed FPC on diverse grounds.

  • Comment: The trees cast distracting shadows on the building, may be a photo when this does not happen can be created.--Redtigerxyz Talk 12:22, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • But is the facade that important at all? I see a value in that the subject of the image is the place where Anne Frank lived (building, street, canal, trees, light), not the facade of the building alone. I find the cold winter/spring light quite fortunate. Elekhh (talk) 13:14, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
      • IMO, "A photograph has appropriate lighting to maximize visible detail" may be compromised and a better picture of the subject may be created. If it is not possible, then this picture is worth a VP status. --Redtigerxyz Talk 15:50, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
        • Note that, unlike by Featured Pictures, the most important criterias for Valued Pictures are encyclopaedic and educational value. This image has been already assessed as being of good technical quality at commons. Elekhh (talk) 10:26, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Falstaff

Original - An image from the first production of Giuseppe Verdi's Falstaff, printed very soon after the premiêre, - the opera premièred on the 9th, this was published on the 18th - in a London Newspaper. When you figure in transport times, and how long it takes to prepare a woodblock engraving, that means this was exceptionally rushed, and it shows in some major flaws - note the beam on the far right that cuts off mid-air, and the funny scratches on the left side, near the top. This'll be an interesting restoration as it moves into its final cleanup, and I have to decide what to fix and what to leave alone, because, judging by intent, a lot of this should go, but I don't want to remove all signs of the rush job. What I'll probably do is remove the misalignments between the woodblocks - which was the fault of the printers, not the artist - clean up the over-inking/bleed through, and then think long and hard before going any further. However, that's going to take a while: This is a very big, high-quality image, from my personal collection, and it'll take quite a lot of time just to fix the over-inking and bleed-through.
Reason
An image of the original production of a major opera, and one of the very few images we have that can be described that way. I intend to push this up to featured picture, but... I've put about 100 hours into this, it's going to need at least that again... That's not going to be soon.

Calne Pigs

Original - Bronze sculpture in Calne celebrating the town's best-known industry

Closing: This nomination has been active for over a third of a year, and I've read it three times in the last few weeks with a thought towards closing it. With no comments since 8 March, it is apparent this is all the input it is likely to get- most of the commenters from last year are liable to have forgotten about it. Rather than let this sit indefinitely, I'm going to explicitly invoke

Featured Pictures Candidates
. Reading this discussion as a whole, I'm closing as consensus to promote ALT1.
