Accounts

Both users are new to WP and are both posting links to their own ad-related page for a new commercial product called Wii HomeBreWare. They are constantly reverting and editing each others text to change the links to their own click-thru pages. Dozens of reverts in a row over the past few days on multiple articles,

Wii homebrew, List of Wii modchips, and WiiWare. I've cleaned up text and removed ad-links, but the two keep reverting them back. I've left notices on their talk pages, but users continue. Taraff1 blanked his talk page to remove my warning. Administrative support would be appreciated. Rurik (talk

For reference, here's the sites they are edit warring over adding:
Taraff1: http://nintendo-wii-homebrew-unlock-hack.blogspot.com
Alex378: http://homebreware.blogspot.com/
Both are blogspot sites that provide links (in some cases commercial links) to other sites. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 19:12, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

A website created by a marketing agency unrelated to any official tennis organization. Provides extremely limited and outdated information. • "This is your only warning. The next time you insert a spam link, as you did to Hollywood North, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Listen, Mark. Your reaction is very typical of a spammer. We actually joke about it:

  • "Since everyone knows who you are (because of your persistent attempts to link to your own company), you may wish to preserve a modicum of dignity by moving straight to the acceptance stage on your own. You can save a great deal of face by simply accepting that your link will never be appropriate here, acknowledging your initial confusion, and moving on with your life. Posting requests on policy pages or noticeboards will only embarrass you, whether you realize it or not."

Indeed. I just started reverting at least the ones in the external links sections, and told the user that I have a problem with his/her additions (not because of the content, but because of the way). I have also invited him/her here, I hope that they will discuss this. --Dirk Beetstra T C 12:46, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, I am expanding on the references, in this edit a reference is added to the sentence "Of these bases, only Rothera and Halley are manned throughout the year". Rothera is in that article only mentioned at the top image (which is about ice cliffs near Rothera), and as far as I read the text, for Halley only is mentioned that it is difficult to reach in winter, so only supplies are brought in summer. So I don't think the reference covers the sentence. Total cleanup? --Dirk Beetstra T C 12:55, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

There are a few additions such as [9] or [10] which aren't particularly detrimental. LeaveSleaves talk 13:07, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi, you have been concerned by some of my edits and I understand why. I am not a spammer, however, and have not been linking anything to a site for advertising purposes. I believe the references/links should be interpreted as a useful addition to what are largely complicated engineering topics that many people will not understand. I accept that my use of references/external links has not always been appropriate for some articles and I will cease activity for now while I iron out how best it can be done (I am relatively new to Wikipedia). Before you revert all external links created I would appreciate it if you could at least check them first for the validity - some link to a profile of an engineer (for example Professor James Dooge), which will unquestionably be of use to those doing research. Thank you.User:AcademyAD —Preceding undated comment was added at 13:09, 9 December 2008 (UTC).

I hope this is resolved, user is discussing. Addition to the above, re "which will unquestionably be of use to those doing research", that's why we have talkpages, to suggest these, we don't need them in the external links. Also, if you have 10 minutes to suggest research to others, then you also had 10 minutes to actually improve 1 or 2 pages yourself with adding the references, which is more helpful. I'll leave it to regulars and wikiprojects now. --Dirk Beetstra T C 10:36, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Linkwatchers / COIBot

We had a crash of the box where the linkwatchers are running last night, I am now repairing the tables. As repairing the tables for the linkwatchers is going to take hours (if not days) The linkwatchers are running on an alternative table for the time being (so we are saving data), but that data is unreliable (as it is a small subset). I have therefore have taken down the saving part for COIBot for the moment. I'll post again when the table has been repaired (don't worry too much, hardly any data has been lost, we only have a large gap for these couple of days). --Dirk Beetstra T C 13:58, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

.. drugs ..

I saw this edit, and investigated a bit:

14 records; domains on server stimulhosting.com (88.85.66.170): golden-pharmacy.com (5), viagrasale.eu (3), flex.stimulhosting.com (2), order-cialis-viagra.com (2), cheap-drugs-online.stimulhosting.com (1), generics-pharmacy.in (1).

In short, a spam server ..

All on

Maybe the server is:

I'll put 'resolve 88.85.66.170' on XLinkBot, I think it is already cleaned up. Little bit of XWiki on this server (Wikis where 88.85.66.170 has been added: en.wikipedia (12), ru.wikipedia (1), en.wikiquote (1).), probably completely useless in any case, blacklist on meta? --Dirk Beetstra T C 13:59, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Talk:Thermoelectric_cooling contains an entirely irrelevant promotion, apparently in Portuguese, for reallys.blogspot.com. The IP used to add it appears to have been used primarily for productive edits. Should I simply remove the promotion? Leave it there? Dfeuer (talk) 22:20, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

I went ahead and removed it. The site was an empty blog - not sure, but possibly used for SEO purposes. And besides, this is the English Wikipedia. -Seidenstud (talk) 22:33, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Improper advertising?

Thermoelectric_cooling contains the sentence "Military rackmount cases developed by ECS Composites use thermoelectric cooling to keep mission critical electronic gear operating in the field." Should I remove this? Modify it so it does not include a company name? Dfeuer (talk) 22:22, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

I'd say! I took care of it. The sentence seems worthy of inclusion, so I removed the brand name and "mission-critical" (which in many cases is simply a buzz-word). -Seidenstud (talk) 22:30, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Is there something about thermodynamic devices that leads to spammish edits?

Thermoacoustic_refrigeration#Event(s) is a list of pet projects, including sponsors, grants, blah, blah, blah. Is the whole section trash, or is some of it worth salvaging? Dfeuer (talk

I think that while the user is almost certainly connected to the foundation, the links added are useful, and the article on the foundation is a good addition to the encyclopedia (although it certainly needs to be sourced).-gadfium 09:00, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
I can't see any serious problem with the edits either. Remember that a
conflict of interest is not in itself a reason to revert edits, block anyone etc. It only becomes a problem if the edits themselves are bad. At the moment I'm working on a rewrite of the conflict of interest guidelines to clear this up - comment on the conflict of interest talkpage if you have thoughts on this. --Helenalex (talk

The added links don't comply with
WP:EL as they're obviously added to promote the site; and they don't add any information to the articles that couldn't be incorporated into the articles with references. Themfromspace (talk

Thank you for your interest in my edits. Yes I do work for the Arts Foundation of New Zealand and we would like to share the research we have done on the artists we have given awards to. Each artist we award and celebrate is given a profile page, containing bibliographic information, on our website. We maintain these pages through direct contact with the artist. It is not viable for us to duplicate this large amount of information on Wikipedia and keep it up to date. This is the reason I have added an external link to the specific profile page of the artist on our website. Thank you for your consideration of this, we would welcome any suggestions for improvement.21:19, 23 December 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Artsfounation (talkcontribs)

My URL is blocked - why I am not allowed to repair my fault?

On 20 Dec my URL was blocked and all links to it were deleted. I made the fault that I added too many links to my own website. I did not know that that is not allowed. I proposed to delete my links myself but I cannot do it because there are no links anymore, logic. I run a non-commercial, educational website: realgems.org (I cannot write the complete URL because it is blocked). I never wanted to spam Wikipedia: Since JULY 08 I added links to my special pages without problem. No deletion, nothing. Now, on 20th Dec, all links were blocked. Reason: spamming. I wrote to someone from Wikipedia who is (perhaps besides others) responsible for this blockade. Finally he told me that he doesn't know how to help me. Then I wrote to a Wiki admin who added a lot of links to other websites, as I did. These links were not regarded as spam, surely because these sites are not his sites. No problem for me but he suddenly cancelled the talk. Now I don't know how to proceed now. I even offered him to become a Wiki member, re additions to various pages ("projects"). No chance. Another problem is that many of my visitors have added links to my site on various Wiki pages, from America to Asia. Their links were also deleted. I find that not very adequate because a lot of the international public (of Wikipedia) seems to be interested in my website, and I made just the fault to add too many links to my own site. Please help me so that at least their links will be re-installed. Then, as I proposed, I will become a valued Wiki supporter / editor. Is that a fair proposal? I think so.

Kind regards, Redberyl Redberyl (talk) 20:19, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

The URL isn't blocked directly on Wikipedia, it's blacklisted at m:Spam blacklist, which is a central blacklist used by all Mediawiki projects (which Wikipedia is just one of many). The discussion and justification for this is documented at m:Talk:Spam_blacklist#realgems.org. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 20:29, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Dear Barek, thanks for your quick response. But what shall I conclude from your message? What can I do? What can you do so that a well-respected website can be reached also on Wikipedia again? Redberyl (talk) 20:36, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

As it's not blacklisted here, the only way to remove the blacklist would be to address the issue at m:Talk:Spam blacklist#Proposed removals; the only thing that could be done directly at Wikipedia would be to request whitelisting on this specific project at MediaWiki talk:Spam-whitelist#Proposed additions to Whitelist (sites_to_unblock). However, I should mention that in both cases, requests by site owners are rarely granted without support from established editors. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 20:46, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Dear Barek, I'm very thankful for your supportive messages. O.K. I will try to put my humble request on the Wiki pages you mentioned.

Btw I cannot send an email to your address. They came back as undeliverable.

Conflict of interest guidelines

I'm trying to get the

conflict of interest guidelines rewritten to be clearer in terms of what is allowable from people with conflicts of interest. At the moment they seem to allow most edits, but there are also several parts saying COI editing is strongly discouraged. It is not clear whether COI editing is generally unacceptable or only when it results in bad edits. I have written a proposed revision of the guidelines, but because of my own conflict of interest I really don't want to make any kind of change without consensus. Since the majority of spam seems to result from conflicts of interest, people in this project should put forward their thoughts at User talk:Helenalex/coirewrite or on the conflict of interest guidelines talkpage. --Helenalex (talk
