Babu Ezhumalai[1] was born in Puducherry, India. He is a senior interventional cardiologist and performs complex angioplasty procedures.[2] He works at Apollo Hospitals, Vanagaram[3][4] in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Early life and education

Ezhumalai completed his schooling at Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School in Puducherry.[5] He pursued his medical education at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER),[6] in Puducherry, India, where he obtained his MBBS, MD in General Medicine and DM in Cardiology degrees.

Career

Ezhumalai began his medical career as an Assistant Professor of Cardiology at Sri Venkateshwaraa Medical College and Research Centre in Puducherry.[7] He later completed his Fellowship (FNB) in Interventional Cardiology, accredited by National Board of Examinations, from Fortis Escorts Heart Institute[8] in New Delhi. Subsequently, he worked at MIOT International Hospital[9] and Fortis Malar Hospital[10] in Chennai. He is currently associated with Apollo Hospitals,[11] Chennai.

Awards and honours

From 2013 to 2016, Ezhumalai served as the National Ambassador of India for the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging, formerly Club 35 and now renamed Heart Imagers of Tomorrow.[12] He received the Best Young Scientist Award at the Transcatheter Therapeutics Asia Pacific conference in Seoul in 2017, becoming the sole Indian awardee .[13] He was appointed the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) Young National Ambassador from 2017 to 2019.[14][15] In June 2023, he was awarded the title “Most trusted Interventional cardiologist in Chennai” by the Golden Aim Awards 2023 for Excellence & Leadership in Healthcare.[16] He as also been honoured with the position of Ajunct Professor of Apollo Hospitals Educational and Research Foundation.[17]

Philanthropy

Ezhumalai is the founder and chairman of the Avatar Heart Foundation,[18] a public charitable trust.
