James G. Busby Jr. is an American attorney and CPA known for his expertise in Arizona state and local tax law.[1]

Early life and education

James is the sixth generation of Busbys to live in Arizona. Early in his life, he attended Amphitheatre Highschool. Later, he graduated from Brigham Young University with bachelors in political science in 1992 before receiving his MBA from W. P. Carey School of Business in Arizona State University in 1994.[2] Additionally, he received his Juris Doctorate from Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University in 1995.[3]

Career

Busby started his career in 1996 as a tax attorney at the Arizona Department of Revenue, where he eventually assumed the position of Chief Auditor for the Transaction Privilege Division.[4] Three years later, he joined Arthur Andersen as a manager, advising their clients on state and local tax matters.

Following the collapse of Arthur Andersen in the aftermath of the Enron scandal, James transitioned to Deloitte & Touche as a senior manager in 2002. After one year at Deloitte, he built his state and local tax practice at Gallagher & Kennedy, an Arizona-based law firm. After 10 years, working there as a shareholder, Busby moved his practice to The Cavanagh Law Firm in 2014.[5]

James is also a fellow of American College of Tax Counsel and a member of Independent SALT Alliance .[6][7] He was included in the list of The Best Lawyers Of America For Tax Law in 2021[8]
