History

Essexville is named after Ransom P. Essex, a local settler.[6]^[7] It was first platted in 1867.^[8] The Essexville Post Office opened on Feb 27, 1871. The Post Office was closed from January 20 to February 24 in 1879.^[9] It was incorporated as a village in 1883 within Hampton Township^[10] and as a city in 1934.^[8]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.41 square miles (3.65 km²), of which 1.30 square miles (3.37 km²) is land and 0.11 square miles (0.28 km²) is water.^[11] It is also directly on the Saginaw River.

The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.87.

The median age in the city was 42.3 years. 22.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.8% were from 25 to 44; 29.8% were from 45 to 64; and 16.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 47.6% male and 52.4% female.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.4% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.4 males.
