Taxonomy

The species was first described officially by American mycologists

classified it in the section Fulventes of subsection Camarophylli of genus Hygrophorus.[2]

Description

The

edibility of this species has not been tested.[3]

The

cap cuticle is made of a layer of gelatinous, branched, intricately interwoven hyphae measuring 2–4 µm in diameter.[2]

Habitat and distribution

The fruit bodies of Hygrophorus goetzi grow singly or in small groups on the ground under

snowbank mushrooms, they are often found near melting snow, or sometimes even growing through the snow. Fruiting occurs in spring or early summer.[4]

Similar species

The similar species Hygrophorus avellaneifolius and H. sublutescens can be distinguished from H. goetzii by their smaller spores and two-spored basidia.[2] Also somewhat similar are H. caereuleus and H. subalpinus.[5]
