List of churches in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans

This is a list of churches in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans. The archdiocese encompasses eight civil parishes in Louisiana: St. Bernard, Jefferson (except Grand Isle)[note 1], Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, and Washington. There are 108 parishes within the archdiocese.[2] As of June 1, 2009, the archdiocese's parishes are organized into ten deaneries.[3]

University campus ministry centers

Tulane University and the University of New Orleans have campus ministry centers: St. Thomas More and St. Thomas the Apostle, respectively. They were parishes until 2008.[4]

Its parish school was the first school racially desegregated by the archdiocese, prompting boycotts from white people and vandalism circa the 1960s. The archdiocese merged the congregation with Port Sulphur's St. Patrick Church.[5] By 2011 the archdiocese listed the congregation's vacant land for sale.[7]

Our Lady of Lourdes
In 1957 there was a dedication ceremony for its auditorium, convent, gymnasium, and latest school building. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 forced the closure, and the archdiocese never reopened it due to the damage sustained. In 2014 the archdiocese chose to sell the building.[5] Its congregation merged into St. Matthias.[4]

The Times Picayune stated that it was a "small but healthy" church.[6] After the archbishop ordered the church closed, members of the congregation occupied it until they were removed by the New Orleans Police Department. It temporarily reopened for a funeral in 2010, as it had not been deconsecrated.[10] Nolan stated that it was one of several churches "that were relatively unscathed by [Hurricane Katrina], but are too small and too near each other to escape consolidation."[9] At the end it had about 300 families who were members.[9] Parishioners were redirected to St. Stephen.[6]
