Captain Rita Lenihan (1914 – November 23, 1989) was an officer in the United States Navy. She served as Director of the WAVES and Assistant Chief of Naval Personnel for Women from 1966 to 1970.

Lenihan received officer training at the
She served as officer in charge of the WAVES Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island.[4] From 1959 to 1961, she was based at the Bureau of Naval Personnel where served as coordinator for the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program and as administrator of the Naval Academy Preparatory School.[1] Promoted to commander,[5] she was Deputy Director of the WAVES from 1961 to 1963. She joined the staff of the Naval War College.[1] In 1966, she was appointed Assistant Chief of Naval Personnel and Director of the Waves.[4]
She retired from the military in 1970.[3]
