New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello Ritchie333,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

Hello Ritchie333,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous

WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed
are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see

January songs
happy new year

The colours of my January calendar image are Ukrainian for a reason. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:14, 4 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Good to see that. I did have a "stop the war" banner of my user page for a bit, but I feel even more strongly that the war has got to end, ideally with victory for Ukraine but a mutual armistice with a completely different Russian government would do. Then extradite Putin to The Hague so he can be tried for war crimes. Elsewhere, I expanded Empire of Light that I recently saw at the cinema, and think the mixed / negative reviews that said the "tribute to the magic of cinema is disappointingly mundane" kind of missed what the film was really about, in my view Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:29, 4 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Good to know, thanks for sharing! - today, I point at two singers I whose performance I enjoyed. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:30, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
today, less pointy: a composition from a remarkable 2022 concert, the sad record of four articles about people who recently died on the Main page at the same time, and singing for Epiphany --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:47, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
pointy again: today's featured article is Osbert Parsley, not by me but Amitchell125 where I commented, including the beginning of my songs. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:03, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm on vacation, - click on songs! I tell
my own stories now, instead of relying on DYK. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:57, 14 January 2023 (UTC)[reply

I'm not up to speed with the DYK discussions; I just put the odd nomination up. That reminds me, I want to see if Theleekycauldron is up for RfA round 2. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:14, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What broke my interest was that Galina Pisarenko was rejected (first) as not interesting, which looks like censoring to me. Finally hook #19 was taken saying that she studied economy and Norwegian along with voice. How is that interesting?? Look at my present top: that was a real hook in 2012 when my friend had died. Today, we probably would have discussed for weeks and ended up saying that he learned Greek while getting ready to run the family business. Just sad. I work for Recent deaths now (where Pisarenko came from). How many died in the few days of this young year that I took care of? See RD, add Lothar Blumhagen and Carl Hahn (not enough done yet) and Kurt Horres (off the Main page). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:24, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ritchie333: I think "[watch this space]" is probably the best I've got for the moment :) theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/her) 06:25, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Today's topics Elisabeth Waterhouse and, yes, Hahn. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:43, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Today's: Elena Manistina, or: why Tchaikovsky's The Enchantress isn't on the Main page, and Clytus Gottwald for whom I made a DYK in 2012 (which would probably be rejected by the current DYK team, up for hookiness and view counts). Two more DYK, then I'm out. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:38, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm back now -
other story is 10 years old OTD ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:23, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply

Question

Hello, i have been working on the Draft:Davide Lo Surdo following the notability criteria.

Could you kindly tell me if it meets the notability criteria? Since i worked following the notability criteria, i think it’s acceptable but i would like to have your opinion if possible.

Thank you so very much in advance and i wish you all the best 91.80.12.230 (talk) 01:56, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have accepted the draft, after doing my own Google News search and finding a number of dedicated pieces, including one in the Italian Rolling Stone about him. That's probably enough to meet the acceptance criteria for mainspace. Simply not having many English sources is not reason in itself to not have an article. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:07, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

notability and FRSA/MBE

Hey, Ritchie! Would these awards support a plausible claim to notability all by themselves (at

Royal Society of the Arts it looks like these are not awards that would get one over the hump in the absence of anything else. Valereee (talk) 16:47, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply
]

Oops, and I see Ritchie's been AWOL for a few days. So any TPS, feel free to tell me how ignorant I am. Valereee (talk) 16:48, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I was taking a short break, no real reason other than I've just been busy elsewhere doing odds and ends and not really had the hours to sit down and do some writing / researching. Anyway, I had a look for sources, and there probably is enough stuff to put together a short encyclopedia article. I'm a bit concerned about stuff like this which, if that is a BLP compliant source (I don't know anything about the Dhaka Tribune but it looks like it is) then it needs to be cited with care. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:25, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the arrest is iffy for including, it isn't being covered much in RS and at this point it's just a dispute over payment for services. I'm more wondering if the guy's really even notable. Except for the MBE and FRSA, everything looks to have been self-generated. Valereee (talk) 14:48, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Grafton Street

The article

good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. DYK for The Farmer (song)

On 24 January 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Farmer (song), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Thin Lizzy's debut single only sold 283 copies? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Farmer (song). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, The Farmer (song)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Your GA nomination of Grafton Street

The article Grafton Street you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Grafton Street for comments about the article, and Talk:Grafton Street/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. For those that are unaware, I suffered an elbow fracture last week, which makes any work on here pretty much difficult to impossible. Can’t say when I’ll be back. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:10, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Take care Ritchie! Maybe myself and @SeoR can have some new Monopoly additions done by the time you're back editing :) Smirkybec (talk) 12:00, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, no, Ritchie! I'm so sorry, feel better soon. Valereee (talk) 14:10, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to hear that, Ritchie! Will certainly be happy to work to advance more squares to B and then on for GA. Get well soon! SeoR (talk) 14:31, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I wish you and your elbow a rapid recovery! Best wishes, --Tryptofish (talk) 19:48, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wishing you as speedy a recovery as possible, Ritchie. To everyone else coming here, Ritchie has a DYK nom open at Template:Did you know nominations/SailRail, which I have reviewed and needs work. It would be great if anyone could address the review in his place. @SeoR and Smirkybec: if you are willing and able. starship.paint (exalt) 01:00, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
