Wikipedia:Requests for permissions
Requests for permissions |
---|
This page enables administrators to handle requests for permissions on the English Wikipedia. Administrators are able to modify account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, file mover, extended confirmed, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback, and template editor rights, and AutoWikiBrowser access. Editors wishing to request a permission flag here should do so following the procedure below. Editors requesting permissions are advised to periodically revisit the requests page, as notifications will not always be given after a decision is made. Editors should not expect their request to be answered right away and should remember to be patient when filing a request. To find out what permissions your account has, go to Special:Preferences, where your permissions are listed in the user profile tab under "Member of groups". Requests for permissions are archived regularly; please see Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Archive for an index of past requests. |
If this page has been recently modified, it may not reflect the most recent changes. Please purge this page to view the most recent changes. |
Permissions
Handled here
- Account creator (add request • view requests): The account creator flag is granted to users who are active in the request an account process. The flag removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24 hour period. It also allows users to make accounts with names similar to other accounts. The account creator flag is only given to users who participate in the ACC process and may be removed without notice should a user's participation in the account creation process cease.
- Autopatrolled (add request • view requests): The autopatrolled flag is granted to users who are active in the creation of new articles. This tool is granted so their creations are auto patrolled in Special:NewPages. Unlike other requests, any user may nominate an editor for Autopatrolled, even without that user's consent. A user who wishes to have this flag generally should have created at least 25 articles and must be trusted, experienced, and must have demonstrated they are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, especially WP:BLP and Wikipedia:Notability.
- AutoWikiBrowser (add request • view requests): AutoWikiBrowser is a semi-automated MediaWiki editor for Microsoft Windows, designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier. It is essentially a browser that automatically opens up a new page when the last is saved. When set to do so, it suggests some changes (typically formatting) that are generally meant to be incidental to the main change. Please read the rules of use and registration requirements on the main page before requesting permission. This is not a true user right, but access needs to be granted by administrators just like other permissions. If approved, your name will be added to the CheckPage. Users with under 250 non-automated mainspace edits or 500 total mainspace edits are rarely approved. You will need to give a reason for wanting AWB access.
- upload files and edit semi-protectedpages before hitting the autoconfirmed flag. Users requesting this flag must indicate clearly why they should be exempted from the customary confirmation period.
- Event coordinator (add request • view requests): The event coordinator user right allows editors to create multiple new accounts, and to temporarily confirm accounts so that they can create new articles.
- Extended confirmed (add request • view requests): The extended confirmed flag is normally automatically added to accounts after 500 edits and 30 days, but may be added to legitimate alternate accounts of users that already have this access. The flag allows users to edit pages under extended confirmed protection.
- File mover (add request • view requests): The file mover user right is intended to allow users experienced in working with files to rename them, subject to policy, with the ease that autoconfirmed users already enjoy when renaming Wikipedia articles.
- Mass message sender (add request • view requests): Mass message sender enables users to send messages to multiple users at once. This flag is given to users who have made requests for delivery in the past, clearly showing an understanding of the guidance for use.
- New page reviewer (add request • view requests): The new page reviewer user right allows users to mark pages as patrolled and use the page curation toolbar. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
- Page mover (add request • view requests): The page mover user right allows users experienced in working with article names to move them, subject to policy, without leaving behind a redirect. They may also move all subpages when moving the parent page(s). General guidelines include making 3,000 edits and 6 months of editing history. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
- Pending changes reviewer (add request • view requests): The reviewer flag is granted to users who are experienced enough with Wikipedia editing and its policies for contributing to the process of reviewing articles placed under pending changes.
- Rollback (add request • view requests): Rollback enables users to remove vandalism much more quickly and efficiently than by undoing it. Users who do not demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes capable vandalism fighting, either because they have no or little history of doing so, or show a poor ability to discern between good and bad faith edits will not be granted this right. Also, it is unlikely that editors with under 200 mainspace edits will have their request granted. For a more detailed explanation of rollback and information about when it is appropriate to use the tool, see Wikipedia:Rollback. For information about the technical details of the feature, see here.
- Template editor (add request • view requests): The template editor flag allows users to edit protected templates and Lua modules. General guidelines for granting include making at least 1,000 edits overall (with at least 150 to templates or modules), being a registered user for over a year, and having a record of successfully proposing significant edits to several protected templates. Users should demonstrate proficiency with template syntax and an understanding of the need for caution when editing heavily-used templates.
Handled elsewhere
Several permissions are requested and handled elsewhere:
- Administrator and bureaucrat access: Requests for administrator or bureaucrat access need to be posted at requests for adminship and requests for bureaucratship, respectively.
- Bots: Request for bot flags should be made at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval.
- Edit filter: Requests for access to the edit filter manager group and the edit filter helper group should be made at Wikipedia:Edit filter noticeboard.
- Interface administrator: Requests for interface administrator access should be made at Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard. Only current administrators may become interface administrators.
- IP-block-exempt: While the IP-block-exempt right can be granted by administrators, this flag is not handled here. Requests for the IP-block exempt right should be submitted via the Unblock Ticket Request System or, if there are significant privacy concerns, email the checkuser team at checkuser-en-wpwikipedia.org or contact a CheckUser directly.
- CheckUser and Oversight: These rights are only granted by the Arbitration Committee, and only after strict scrutiny. More information can be found here.
- AfC reviewer: This access is granted by administrators at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation/Participants.
- Redirect autopatrol list: Addition to the list is granted by administrators at Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Redirect autopatrol list.
- Steward permissions can only be granted in yearly elections, and are rarely given.
- Global permissions such as global renamer, sysop, IP block exempt, rollback, etc should be made at meta:Steward requests/Global permissions.
Removal of permissions
If you wish to have any of your permission flags (except administrator) removed, you should contact an administrator. If you want your administrator flag removed, you should contact a bureaucrat.
This is not the place to request review of another user's rights. If you believe someone's actions merit removal of a permission flag, you should raise your concern at the incidents noticeboard.
The bureaucrat, checkuser, and oversight flags are removed at meta:Steward requests/Permissions. Stewards will typically not carry out such requests unless they are made on behalf of the Arbitration Committee, by a user who is requesting their own access be removed, or in cases of an emergency.
Process
Requestors
To make a request for a permission, click "add request" next to the appropriate header and fill in the reason for wanting permission.
Any editor may comment on requests for permission.
Administrators
Administrators are permitted to grant account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, event coordinator, file mover, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback and template editor flags to any user who meets the criteria explained above and can be trusted not to abuse the tool(s). Administrators may either grant these permissions permanently or temporarily. For convenience, a bot will automatically comment with relevant data if the user does not meet configurable qualifications. Even if the bot does not comment, administrators should review the user's contributions and logs to ensure the tools will be used appropriately and check for any indication of potential misuse.
Once an administrator has granted a permission or decided to deny a request, they should add {{done}} or {{not done}} respectively under the request with their comments. If a user already has the requested permission, or is autoconfirmed and requesting confirmed, {{already done}} should be used. N hours after the last comment was made (as specified by the config), the request will be archived automatically: approved requests will be placed here; declined requests will go here. See User:MusikBot/PermClerk#Archiving for more information on archiving functionality.
Other editors
Requests for permissions is primarily intended for editors requesting a permission for their own account. Other editors are welcome to comment if they have specific information that is relevant to that request that a patrolling administrator is unlikely to discover for themselves. Otherwise, since only administrators can effectively respond to these requests, general comments or 'clerking' by other users are rarely helpful. Non-administrators cannot "decline" to grant a request, because they're not in a position to accept it.
A limited exception to this is Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled, where third party nominations are encouraged. Other editors should still avoid offering general remarks on requests and leave the final decision to an administrator.

I have been contributing to Wikipedia since the beginning of 2021 in the domain of biographies, particularly those of Islamic scholars, academics, and literary figures. Several of my drafts were approved in AfC, and several of my articles have been marked as reviewed by new page patrollers. My articles include Abdullah Hasani Nadwi, Abdul Khaliq Madrasi, Abul Kalam Qasmi Shamsi, Amjad Najmi, Ahmed Ali Badarpuri, Ibrahim Balyawi, Kafeel Ahmad Qasmi, Karamat Ali Karamat, Mahdi Hasan Shahjahanpuri, Muhammad Ismail Katki, Sharif Hasan Deobandi, Sirajussajidin Katki, and Wahiduzzaman Kairanawi. I am asking for an autopatrolled flag since I understand the notability requirements. I believe that my articles don't require patrolling currently, and the load of new page patrollers should lessen. Patroller Usedtobecool thinks this individual would be a good fit for autopatrolled. Britfilm has 600 articles in the past year (~80 in the queue right now) and I am not seeing any deletion controversies. Articles are not massive but they're using proper sources and I don't see what NPRs can do except marking them reviewed.

I have created many clean pages without maintenance tags on them. This of course wasn't easy as I had to spend months learning how to create pages by visiting the Teahouse (a place without a sip of tea) to avoid embarrassing and suffocating the pages I create with maintenance tags overdose. Having this right will help improve this encyclopedia and lessen the work of those who review new articles. Tapmani (talk) 09:19, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

Good day! I keep receiving notifications about pages that I created a while ago and started to wonder if I should seek autopatrolled rights to lessen the burden of NPP reviewers. I've been contributing to WMF projects since 2009. Here on enwiki, I've made over 9,000 edits and created over 90 pages. Of them, only four were deleted -- three were later re-created by me and kept, and one test template was deleted at my own request. I primarily write about Central Asia's culture, geography, and history. Some of my latest contributions include copy-editing and updating the entry on Queen's University at Kingston and turning a redirect page into a proper article about the highly important Andijan Reservoir. I already have autopatrolled rights on ruwiki, trwiki, and Commons and have had advanced rights on uzwiki since 2012. Admittedly, since I'm active on so many projects, my contributions tend to be short, but I have a solid grasp of notability guidelines. Nataev talk 19:39, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

Saw this user when patrolling, which they've created nearly 200 redirects with no controversial deletions. However, in the grand scheme of things, their article creation track record is even more impressive; author of multiple GAs and many B-class articles, 72 creations with no deletions. Came across this user while patrolling, and am nicely impressed. With 43 articles created, Frzzl already has multiple GAs from their own creations. Among their last 38 page creations, only one has been a stub, and most are C-class. Frzzl's only deletion was their first ever page tagged as G2; in other words, no problems that I can tell. Came across while patrolling; Tacyarg is a long-time editor since 2009, who started creating articles in 2017. Since then, they've created 32 pages, all of which being fleshed out with few stubs. Besides a G7, they've only had one deletion which was on their second ever article in 2017. This case was basically creating the BLP too soon, as it ended up springing up again and has remained stable ever since. I feel their track record since 2009 speaks for itself, and can be trusted to create great pages. Utopes (talk / cont) 06:21, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

Saw this user while patrolling. Knightoftheswords has done a great job at building up articles on all sorts of current topics, from the humble beginnings up to generally B and C class articles across the board. They've created 29 so far with zero deletions... besides one that shows up in XTools, which was due to a now-blocked user moving Knight's draft on the Whatever (podcast) into mainspace against Knight's wishes, to which Knight can't be faulted for (as they confirmed this during the associated AfD). With all else being equal, I feel like their creations have all been solidly put together, even if it takes a few edits to get there, and they have a good understanding of writing articles and policy. Came across while patrolling. Dr Gangrene has created 173 articles since 2005. 27 of these articles were made in November 2023 or later. The articles might not be the lengthiest, but they're all still free of tags, and with such a long track record I don't foresee any issues with marking these as patrolled. They have zero pages deleted in the last two decades... besides one, which is somewhat odd; XTools shows their second ever article was deleted, created in 2007, but with 45 bytes to start it looks like a redirect. It was eventually G11'd in 2020, so I have to guess that was due to material added by someone else, as it'd be highly unusual to G11 a page after 13 years of existence, but I digress. Looks like an otherwise handy autopatrol. Utopes (talk / cont) 06:53, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

I am requesting extended confirmed rights to be able to use the translation tool for Afrikaans to English articles. I am mostly active on the Afrikaans Wikipedia, and the total time I have available to work on Wikipedia is limited and sporadic, therefore I do not have that many edits on the English Wiki, but I do understand the basics of editing and the translation tool, having translated a few articles to Afrikaans and one (Trienke Laurie) to English. My global edits across the project is about 560. Thank you for your kind consideration. Thermofan (talk) 01:23, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
- Not done This right is only manually granted in extremely unusual situations, and "I want to use the Content Translation tool" isn't it. The right is by design granted based on edits to the English Wikipedia only. You can still use the content translation tool if you publish to the draft or user namespace rather than directly to mainspace. * Pppery * it has begun... 03:42, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

I have over 120 new articles under my belt, mostly relating to medieval history, monasteries, saints, and geographical features. I am familiar with the kinds of content that would fall under CSD criteria, since I have experience wikifying new pages and tagging obviously problematic new pages for speedy deletion. Familiar with guidelines on AfC, AfD, notability, and proper sourcing, and also draftifying new articles and rating talk pages using scripts. Would be quite happy to help out with the backlog while being cautious and careful. Also currently a Pending Changes Reviewer. Florificapis (talk) 08:26, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

I'm interested in becoming a new page patroller, as I feel that each edit, no matter how small, helps with the completion of new articles. Also, I tried getting in touch with Cassiopeia yesterday so I could attend NPP school, but they haven't gotten back to me yet. OpalYosutebito (talk) 23:29, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

- Not done. Thank you for volunteering, but I'm going to decline this for now. We typically look for a demonstrated history of experience with notability guidelines and an ability to communicate with other users clearly. Experience with notability guidelines can show up in many forms, including particiation at Articles for Deletion and to make policy based votes to show an understanding of our policies and to re-apply in a little bit after doing so. I recently received an invitation to apply for this set of permissions, and I am happy to oblige. - My philosophy is to be very conservative about changing the name of articles. The most important thing is to improve article content (IMO): article renaming can produce drama that takes time away from other editing tasks. I learned this lesson back in 2011, see the >200KB discussion at the Shishapangma talk archives: 1, 2, 3. I tend to only rarely get involved in RM, and would probably only use this userright about once every year or two.

- I am extended-confirmed, so I have a good amount of experience with editing.
- I have dealt with vandalism a lot and have an idea about what is vandalism and what is not (I have successfully identified and reported numerous instances of vandalism).
- I am familiar with verification, and what WP is not.
- I am familiar with copyright on WP.
- I have read the guidelines on reviewing.

Hi, I would like to request this right because,
- I have over 3 months of experience reverting non-constructive and unsourced edits and over more than 250 undos in that period.
- I would like to use that tool to decline pending edits by non-autoconfirmed users that are obviously vandalism, unconstructive or not helpful to the encyclopedia in pending changes-protected pages.
- I have read the policies of WP:SUE.

Here's the criteria I have for being a Pending Changes Reviewer:
1. I have a account 3 years old (although I have started picking up editing beginning November 2023)
2. I think I have a good editing history, and a good track record.
3. I understand what's vandalism and what isn't (accidentally misspelling a word during your edit is in good faith, but doing things like changing the date of a movie from 2024 to 1956 is vandalism)
4. I know the basic policies,
5. I know that you cannot violate the Copyright policy. (
6.I understand the guidelines on reviewing.
But, you may ask, why do I want this permission? My answer is, to help people out on Wikipedia. If someone makes a edit that might not be correct, I could correct them on their edit. And I would like to use this tool to help "implode vandals", as the cool kids say. :) Waylon (he was here) (Does my editing suck? Let's talk.) (Also, not to brag, but...) 19:25, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

I have used Twinkle to revert vandalism mostly from the recent changes page for a while now and warn/report users. Twinkle is not sufficient for me on "longer" articles because of my slow internet connection. Reverts I make with Twinkle often take up to ten seconds, which slows me down. Rollback permissions would be greatly appreciated to make edits faster and save time. I can be trusted with rollback permissions as I have been actively reverting vandalism since July 2023, consistantly warning editors with the templates that Twinkle offers with little breaks. I have a satisfactory understanding of what is and what is not vandalism. Additonally, pages on my watchlist get vandalized a lot too, so I could always help revert edits as I have a sharp eye on it. - @WP:ROWN. As for the second edit, a new user was engaging in edit war and personally attacking me because they reworded a sentence in an article. I reverted their first ever edit and requested a discussion on a talk page, but they just reintroduced their changes. They reverted my edit two more times (for a total of three). After they finally answered my comment with a reply on a talk page, I explained why I reverted it. The user linked one or two policy articles and then stated in an edit summary that this dispute was, "not worth my time." I have not heard from them since. I hope this helps satisfy your request. - I see that you are failing to consistently warn editors when you revert their edits. Why? Are you aware that we have tools such as Twinkle or Ultraviolet that make this extremely easy? -Fastily 22:33, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you Fastily. I do warn users with Twinkle feature and that is only when I am sure that such edit is a clear vandalism. But when I revert edits that appear as good faith edits I do not warn them as I think that it’s not necessary to warn them but if it is necessary to do so I will warn users going forward. I hope this clarifies the issue. Lagdo22 (talk) 11:42, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for confirming, please start doing that moving forward. Upon further review however, I'm not seeing enough recent anti-vandalism experience to confidently say whether you are a good candidate for this tool. If you're still interested in this tool then please spend at least a month actively patrolling RecentChanges (Twinkle & Ultraviolet can help with that) before reapplying. Also, please ensure that you are consistently warning editors when you revert their edits. Closing as Not done. Thanks, Fastily 22:19, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
