The article notes from a New York Times article (and I have seen other references, but probably all same source) that a research expedition was travelling there in late 2019. Did they determine anything yet? I did some limited searching on the internet and didn't find anything.
refer to reference 4). They confirmed that yes, the population has indeed declined. They radio transmitter-labelled some birds, and they see their foraging extends northward, presumably to the lower-latitude warm/cold water interface, for more food than was present locally in the past. Maybe. Reams of data, but no conclusions yet.
