Synonymous? 'Access code' and 'Password'

Is there a difference between an "access code" and a "password"? Joyous! | Talk 02:12, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • This is a non-definitive answer that I hope you find helpful. I don't use the two terms synonymously; rather, I use 'password' in the specific sense of an alphanumeric code that is typed using a QWERTY keyboard, while I use 'access code' for things like keypad entries such as those used for ATMs and keypad door security systems as well as 'invisible' codes that are contained in RFIDs embedded in identity badges. In the (current) section "What is an access code?" the word actually must be deleted, per WP policy. Instead of "An access code is a type of password" I suggest a cited paragraph be added to the article explaining that the term access code is a generic term, and the term password is a particular example or type of access code.
Actually, on third thought I've been bold and done it, including deleting the section "What is an access code?", which only had one line in it - hardly worth a section, sorry. If someone can find a ref please. Bricaniwi (talk) 15:55, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New / renamed sections

Although I haven't had time to find refs, it is clear to me (from my work in the IT industry) that there are two major types of access codes described here: secure and non-secure. (I actually wondered whether the non-secure ones even belonged here, as the lead is all about security, but the (current) refs mention them so they are valid. The problem was the way the lead was written. I have been bold and re-organised the sections accordingly. (Looking at the short list of what links here I doubt if any links are to sections, but if they are they will land on the article anyway and it is not large enough (yet) that the reader will get lost.) Can someone please cleanup lead, etc, and add refs. Thanks. Bricaniwi (talk) 15:50, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Change to disambiguation

I replaced the contents of this page with a disambiguation page. I don't think the topic meets
