Synonyms and taxonomical history

It would be helpful to have some taxonomical history to facilitate searches for previously accepted taxa, e.g. Lepus whytei and L. crawshayi, both of which appear to have been synonymised with this species. The well known Haltenorth and Diller, A Field Guide to the Mammals of Africa including Madagascar makes no mention of L. microtis, but lists L. whytei (= crawshayi) with identical range to L. microtis as given in this article, which only mentions L. victoriae as a synonym.
