Club name

I keep finding conflicting accounts of what the club was previously called. It seems unanimous that the club was originally "Clackmannan County" for its first season in 1878-79. From then on it gets confusing.

  • The official website says it was changed to "Alloa Association F.C." between 1897-83 (I presume this is a typo and is meant to read "1879-83") and it has been called "Alloa Athletic F.C." ever since 1883. However...
  • Another source says the "Alloa Association" club merged with another club called "Wellington" in 1884 and retained the "Alloa Association" name for one season. It then changed name and registered this with the Scottish Football Association as "Alloa Athletic" in 1885 which has remained since. But... from what I can gather, when the club joined the SFL in 1921 it registered simply as "Alloa" and this was rectified officially in 1998.
  • Another says it had always officially been "Alloa Association F.C." or "Alloa A.F.C." for short since 1879, and this was misinterpreted by the press as "Alloa Athletic", by which the club became commonly known. The club then adopted this name officially in 1998 by registering it with the SFA.

If that makes any sense to anyone then I'd be impressed(!). If anyone is able to help create a consensus as to the facts then it can be recorded here accurately on Wikipedia for the benefit of everyone who might be interested. Thanks, Cal Umbra 20:46, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
