Town name
Ballina, according to all reports I've ever seen, was named after an Aboriginal word, bullinah (or something close to it) and was changed to Ballina. Its resemblance to the Irish town is a coincidence. I'll research this one and make any changes accordingly. Peter1968 02:36, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)
The Irish town is pronounced more like balin-ah (with a pause bewteen balin and ah). This and the fact that there is no aboriginal written language makes this statement make absotetly no sense "according to all reports I've ever seen, was named after an Aboriginal word, bullinah". "Goolmangar, the water gum tree; boi boi gar (the true name for Rosebank), meaning apple tree; Gerrangi (the true name for Bexhill) meaning red gum tree. Coondoorimba now Gundurimbah was the aboriginal name for a man with a palsy or crossed eyes, so evidently a man with one of these inflictions resided in that locality. Bulloona, now known as Ballina, meant the outlet of a river." http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/72145215?searchTerm=THE%20BATTLE%20OF%20LISMORE.%20A%20TRUE%20STORY%20OF%20THE%20DAYS%20OF%20THE%20DARKIE.&searchLimits=l-state=New+South+Wales%7C%7C%7Cl-title=81%7C%7C%7Csortby=dateAsc National library of Australia scan of The Northern Star, Tuesday 13 October 1914, Page 4 from the memories of a long term resident of the region. Prawn greeting
I've just removed this quote from the article "and a common greeting in ballina is "hail the prawn" this can be very confusing for turists . " An amusing piece of vandalism (unless of course there is a source!). Blarneytherinosaur talk 12:02, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Whaling
I assume this is the place referenced by Harry Robertson in The Ballina Whalers? Does Ballina have a history as a whaling station?
- That could be right. There was a bit of whaling about in the early days of Australia (more so New Zeland), and I don't know of anywhere else called Ballina. Blarneytherinosaur talk 01:09, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
Ballina Bypass
The Ballina bypass is expected to be completed in 2012 or so because of the very swampy land around the proposed alignment of the bypass. —The preceding
