Bobby "Nig" Bragan

Shouldn't we include his nickname, "Nig"?

Other baseball players use it, and he used it also.

How he got thrown out of his last game as a manager

I had always enjoyed the excitement of a Bobby Bragan argument with an umpire in his days as a National League manager, so when I read that he had been thrown out of a minor league game at age 89 (?) I wondered how it had happened. Had it been one of his trademark dirt kicking, shouting, leaning-into-the-umpire's-face tirades?

A few days later I happened to hear him interviewed on NPR. He was pretty soft spoken in his first few remarks and of course after a while the interviewer asked him exactly how and why he had been thrown out of that last game. He said that one of his players had been called out on strikes and that the player had then been thrown out of the game after just the briefest of complaints to the umpire.

So Bragan left the dugout to find out what had been said by his player that offended the ump so badly. He asked the ump, had the player cursed him? Umpire said, no. Asked the ump, well did the player use any bad language at all? Umpire said, no. So Bragan asked, "well, what *did* he say to you?" Umpire said, "he told me I wasn't calling a very good game."

Bragan said quietly, Well, I told him: "I happen to share in that opinion." That was all it took, and the ump threw Bragan out too! Publius3 (talk) 05:41, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
