I removed the following sentence from the article:

The United States government thanked him for his wartime work with the Medal of Merit

because I can't tell what medal is meant. Medal of Merit on Wikipedia redirects to the French Médaille militaire. I couldn't readily find a source that said what American medal Davis received, but if anyone can determine that, the sentence should be fixed and replaced. -EDM 01:26, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted this article to a previous version to remove someone's additions which, while perhaps well meaning, gave an unmistakably negative cast to the subject of the article which is not justified by the single source cited, an op-ed piece in the Jerusalem Post by the director of the

The full version of the Vrba report [a description of what was going on at Auschwitz, by an escapee] was actually held up in Switzerland for three months by US diplomats who regarded it as low priority. And when the report finally reached Washington in October, the Office of War Information opposed distributing it; OWI director Elmer Davis claimed the report was actually part of a Nazi conspiracy to "create contempt for the [Jewish] inmates" by showing that the Jews were not resisting their killers.

Fortunately, Davis and his cockamamie theories were too late to blunt the impact of the Auschwitz Protocols. The Hungarian deportations had been stopped, and Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler had played a significant role in bringing that about.

From that the editor whose additions I removed extrapolated that Davis had "recommended that President Roosevelt bury evidence of the ongoing slaughter at Auschwitz", that Davis "suggested to President Roosevelt that Auschwitz was a hoax", etc. None of that is supported by the Jerusalem Post article. Certainly there is plenty of blame to go around in the U.S. government's response to reports of Nazi atrocities; Davis may not have acquitted himself any better in that regard than dozens of other officials, but he was hardly the Nazi-sympathizing, Holocaust-denying villain that the previous edits painted him as. 68.165.238.243 (talk) 04:49, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

June 21, 1942 article in the Louisville, KY Courier-Journal lists Davis as author of six novels (including Giant Killer) as well as two short story collections and one essay collection. Lazlo Nibble (talk) 21:36, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
