Isnt it evident that there exist more then one declaration for the term fan service?!

This page is about a specific nudity in animes. That is !sometimes! called fanservice by the japanese people. It has nothing to do with the concept of selling or producing summarized as MARKETING! You people do to much of commerical calls these days.^^

The kind of nudity declared as fanservice is an axiom for sex sells. It isnt a part of the work itself and is generally used to light up or to make fun of some characters at a specific time of the story. So it became a tool of character and relation building. Its use isnt determine for selling the art but to become a part of the art. And that is the true fan service story all about.

The serious use of sex sells is a part of promoting as it is a part of marketing. Do you know about idols in japan? There are rumors that some (female) idols even fought with !everything! they have got to gain fame by the fans and that for to win a contest. In western countrys that is known as preliminary talk or private briefing with the jury. Well, western companies gives a shit about there costumers and fame is produced by advertising alone. Easier life for idols here i guess...:P

I think that is the origin of the use of the term fan service in animes. But nowadays it became a running gag and it is used for stylistic means.

I'm not sure what you're proposing. This article is about more than nudity in anime. Of course, that's one aspect of it (perhaps even the largest one), but I think the cited material expands it well beyond that definition, even within anime itself. Marketing is a big part of this article as there is a lot of crossover between general "sex sells" and "fan service" but fan service specifically describeso meta-references designed for the purposes of audience titillation that are removed from the general work being enjoyed. Fan service may or may not have originated in anime, however it now has a much broader and more widely used meaning that has very little to do with sexual stuff, i.e. stuff that is blatantly shoe-horned into movies just to please the fans, e.g. almost everything in El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie ;) 81.135.72.147 (talk) 15:44, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. As I first encountered the term used in US English years ago, it was precisely this sense of "any content, such as trivia or character mentions, not necessarily related directly to the plot or substance of a story, that is inserted in an effort to appeal to fans".

I note too that the term "fan service", as in "service provided in a way to appeal to, or even to create, fans", shows up since at least the 1993 book Raving Fans: A Revolutionary Approach To Customer Service, by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles. This context has nothing directly to do with anime or sexual content. See also this Google Books search for the term "fan service" in works between 1956 and 1999:

The older works are about servicing (maintaining, repairing) fans (devices for moving air). So far, the 1993 work above is the first I've found that talks about "fans" in terms of "people who like a particular product or content". There may be older works as well, I just haven't dug through the hits that far.

Suggestion: This article appears to be in need of either a rewrite to include more than just a description of sexual content in anime and manga, or a retitling to clarify that this is about a very specific subset of "fan service". ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │^{Tala við mig} 17:19, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It seems most of the discussion of "fan service" I see of late is more like what we see in a Marvel movie, crammed with in-jokes and character appearances to reward fans who are invested in the world. Thmazing (talk) 16:56, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the sexual depiction of a beloved community mascot should not be the cover picture thingy for this article, as Jimbo "😩Daddy of Wikipedia😩" Wales has removed a similar image of her from Commons.
