I studied German for two years, and I'm pretty sure that the letter e with an umlaut (double dot) over it does not occur in that language. So I assume this use of the double dot mark must be a diaeresis, to indicate that the e is to be pronounced separately from the letter before it, an i in this case. I would be glad to see someone with definite knowledge indicate how this name is pronounced.

i am native german. you are right. "ie" is usually pronounced as an extended, long "i". but the sir name of mr piech (sorry, can't write it correctly on this keyboard) the "e" is to be pronounced seperately. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.107.115.151 (talk) 22:57, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User:Bledwith I can agree with removing the personal anecdotes due to the belief they aren't encyclopedic, but the basic info from them may still be relevant to include in condensed form. "Many automotive journalists who have encountered Piech described him as being socially awkward and uncomfortable to be around." "Piech liked to accompany journalists when they test drove Volkswagen vehicles, often asking them to test the vehicles at the limits of their capabilities." I do believe the quote from Bob Lutz describing Piech's management style as a "reign of terror" should be restored - it is valid for this encyclopedia as its not an anecdote, it's commentary on Piech's management style from a very respected commentator who's opinions are widely reproduced across automotive publications and general business publications. Also, I do think a mention of Piech having an abrasive personality and being socially awkward deserves mention here as well - it's been extensively written about and even affected Volkswagen's internal politics at certain points. In the late 80s/early 90s, when Piech had become a bigwig within the company but was still beneath CEO predecessor Carl Hahn, Hahn took note of Piech's poor social skills and began keeping him behind closed doors and excluding him from public events and meetings with outside officials because of it. Notably, Hahn didn't allow Piech to introduce the Audi Avus quattro concept car at the 1991 North American International Auto show, instead Hahn introduced it himself, which absolutely infuriated Piech due to his extensive personal involvement in the concept car's creation. I want to add that to the article but I am still trying to dig up the old book from 1993 that described the conflicts between Hahn and Piech to cite as a source. There's a couple of stories from one or two journalists here, not extensive evidence. That may exist but it's not in three text removed in its current form. I think what remains adequately covers his management style and personality already.
